Random Passage: A Step Back In Time
September 29, 2017 had a profound effect on me as a Newfoundlander. I stepped through the entranceway to the Random Passage site in New Bonaventure, Newfoundland and stepped back in time. Our ancesters and early settlers lived, perserved and survived under hardships we possibly could not understand. As I walked throught the site with my camera gear I was totally awestruck by what I saw. Take a step back with me and you may have a better understanding of where we came from and why as Newfoundlanders we are such a hardy bunch...Harold

Random Passage - Trailer
This award winning miniseries traces the difficult passage of young Mary Keane (Aoife McMahon) from servitude in Ireland to the squalor of rough-and-tumble Newfoundland in the early 1800s. Escaping attempted rape and abuse, Mary moves on with her infant daughter to find shelter at a remote fishing station run by Thomas Hutchings (Colm Meaney -Layer Cake, Kings). In a time and place where life and death are a hair's breadth apart, Mary joins the community's struggle for survival against sickness and starvation. All of the Cape's people are fugitives of one kind or another, but by pulling together through hardships and tragedies, they forge a new life of hope - and even love.

Hike from British Harbour to New Bonaventure
Trinity Bay and hiking the Skerwink Trail #SplitTheRock
In New Bonaventure, we set out with Bruce Miller of Rugged Beauty Boat Tours to tour the coast around Trinity Bay, including resettled communities like Ireland's Eye and British Harbour. The tour was one of the most refreshingly honest tours I've ever experienced; Bruce is an opinionated fellow, and he's not afraid to be vocal about it. We even ended up at his cabin for a cup of tea and an Ugly Stick session.
Then: the hike around the Skerwink Trail, from Trinity. One of the best maintained and most beautiful trails I've seen in Newfoundland and Labrador.

A Weekend in Burin
Taking a well deserved vacation from the city, two friends and I spent a June weekend in Burin. It was typically foggy and wet, but when it was time to leave it was very difficult to leave behind the change of pace.
