The Backbreaking Ride from Padum to Kargil, Ladakh
A 3:00a wake-up at the Ibex Hotel in Padum to finish packing then out in the chill of morning to wait for our crew. Into a new jeep carrying less gear with packed breakfast and lunch made by cook Baikaji.
This 4x4 had tires that were beyond pitiful. Bald, spare had chunks of tread missing! How long would these tires last? Surely not all the way to Kargil!
And so began a 16 hour agonizing journey on what passed for a road... Just shoot me now...
Drive from Kargil to Rangdum, India (14/09/2018)
Some clips of the scenic drive from Kargil to Rangdum in the Indian Himalayas on the 14th September 2018. The road leads south through the Suru Valley with its little villages and green meadows before turning east into more mountainous terrain passing glaciers and snow-clad peaks. While the countryside becomes barren and less populated, the drive gets more and more bumpy.

Rangdum Gompa from 18th century in Zanskar Valley
Rangdum Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery belonging to the Gelugpa sect, situated on top of a small but steep sugarloaf hill at an altitude of 4,031 m (13,225 ft) at the head of the Suru Valley, in Ladakh. It is next to the tiny village of Julidok, and about 25 km from the 4,400 m (14,436 ft) Pensi La which leads into Zanskar.
Rangdum Gompa Monastery is located near the Zanskar area. This monastery is the prime attraction of the Zanskar region founded in the 18th century.
The Rangdum Monastery of Ladakh owns the entire valley around it , there are more than 50 Monks who depend upon the offerings of grains and butter from the villages , the villagers who tilled the fields are decedents of serf-tenants of the monastery. The small villages of Yuldo and Julidok, at the end of the valley are entirely Buddhist. The people are socially and culturally part of Zanskar and support the Rangdum Monastery,The country surrounding is very bleak crops sometimes cannot ripen in the brief summer. The locals depend on their flocks and supplies from lower down the Suru Valley from Kargil or over the pass from Zanskar. it is also the destination of the nomadic herds people called Bakaarwals, who trek up every year from the Himalayan foothills from around Jammu area , bringing their flocks of sheep and goats to grow fat on the rich summer growth of grass.

Raid de Himalaya - Wheels roll towards Padum from Rangdum on Day 5
Day 5 of Raid de Himalaya started from Rangdum, at the head of the Suru Valley in Ladakh, passed over the Pensi La Pass went to Padum, the headquarter of Zanskar and ended at Rangdum. The leg began near colourful tents at the Rangdum camp, with vehicles being flagged off early morning one by one.
Rangdum is the last inhabited region of the Suru Valley, known for the Buddhist monastery Rangdum Gonpa. The region is connected by a link road to NH 1 at Kargil. During October, when the Raid de Himalaya is organised the minimum temperatures in Rangdum go as low as -16 but in 2015, the weather conditions remained surprisingly good and the temperatures didn't plummet much.

Exploring Western Ladakh - Kargil to Padum via Rangdum
Western Ladakh is worth exploring after the tourists have visited the regular destinations in Ladakh with Leh as the focal point. The four day journey takes one through Suru Valley and Zanskar valley with enchanting topography, and awesome landscapes. The noteworthy sightseeing places en route are giant rock-cut Buddha, Penzi La pass, Parkachik La glacier, Drang Drung glacier and many monasteries with enchanting views of valley below. Suru valley is a valley in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, which is drained by the Suru River (Indus), a powerful tributary of the Indus river. The valley's most significant town is Kargil.
The Suru valley is inhabited by 25,000 by people of Dard and Tibetan descent. In Kargil and the lower Suru Valley (i.e. Sanku, Panikhar and south as far as Parkachik), the majority of the population are followers of Shi'a Islam, having converted from Tibetan Buddhism in the 16th century under the direction of Thi-Namgyal.[citation needed] Beyond Parkachik the spectacularly beautiful valley is practically uninhabited other than a couple of tiny settlements (Yuldo and Julidok) that consist Rangdum. People here are socially and culturally part of neighbouring Buddhist Zanskar and support the 18th century Rangdum Monastery belonging to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. About 25 km south of Rangdum Monastery, the 4,400 m (14,436 ft) Pensi La (pass) leads into Zanskar.

Pensi La, Kargil-Padum (Zanskar) Road, J&K, India
Pensi-la (Pensi Pass) is a mountain pass in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, which is known as the Gateway to Zanskar. Pensi La is 4,400 m (14,436 ft) above sea level and connects the Suru Valley region to the Zanskar Valley region. The summit at this end of the Suru Valley, the only peak which can be seen, is 7,012 m (23,005 ft) high, while the mountain to the north is 6,873 m (22,549 ft). The pass is about 25 km from Rangdum Monastery.

To the west of Pensi La watershed flows the Suru River, an important tributary of the Indus which meets at Kargil. The Drang Drung Glacier to the eastern flank of Pensi La is the source of Stod or Doda River which flows into the Padum Valley, and joins with Tsarap Chu to form the mighty Zanskar River.
The descent from the Pensi La into the Stod Valley [in Zanskar] is steeper than the climb up from Rangdum Gompa, but not too difficult. The road winds about with many hairpin turns, which can be cut across on foot, to the river below. Wild rhubarb can be seen growing on the slopes. The generally used trekking route follows the road on the left bank of the Stod (or Doda). . . . The grass at the foot of the Pensi La furnishes a good pasturage and this is a fine camping spot.
. Pensi-La is also the gateway to the Padum, the headquarters of Zanskar sub-division of Kargil district. A 240 km metalled road connecting Kargil town to Padum, through the Pensi La remains open for a brief 5 months, between May and October.[citation needed]
Before the modern road was built, the pass, apparently, used to be open only three months of the year because of heavy snows.

PENZI LA or PENSI LA is a motor able mountain pass 14000 feet above the sea level which provides the only road access to ZANKAR Valley from KARGIL.ZANSKAR RANGE separates SURU valley from the STOD valley.This pass offers wide panorama of GREAT HIMALAYAS and ZANSKAR RANGE.The mighty DRANG DRUNG glacier which is the source of STOD river can be seen from this pass.This river later merges with a few tributaries to form the ZANSKAR river.DODA peak can be seen in its full splendor from this pass.Penzi La pass lies between RANDGUM Gonpa and PADUM.There are two lakes atop this pass STAT TSO and LAM TSO . Padum is the capital of ZANSKAR valley.It remains cut off by road from rest of the world for nearly 9 months.The road opens in JULY till SEPTEMBER.Zanskar is a mountain zone which is surrounded on all sides by high mountains.High passes provide access to this valley but they too open for 3-4 months only.ZANSKAR on one end is connected to HIMACHAL ( LAHOUL) and to the LADAKH and KISTWAR areas of J&K.The other side is connected to KARGIL.Padum is a small town and people of ZANSKAR come here to get all their rations and things of daily needs.RANGDUM GONPA,KARSHA MONASTERY,BARDAN GONPA,MUNEY GONPA,PHUGTAL GONPA are a few prominent monasteries of ZANSKAR valley.ZANSKAR is accessible via high passes.SHINGO LA,KANG LA,POAT LA passes provide access over GREAT HIMALAYAS to Zanskar.These passes lie on the boundary of HIMACHAL and JAMMU KASHMIR.PHIRTSE LA connects ZANSKAR with LADAKH while there are many passes in ZANSKAR RANGE like Shingi La etc which connect different villages of ZANSKAR.Winters here are very harsh and the only access is via a very dangerous trail where one has to walk over the frozen ZANSKAR RIVER ( CHADAR TREK ).The people of this area are BUDDHISTS.ZANSKAR was once an important trade route between TIBET and INDIA.The beautiful villages of ZANSKAR viz PADUM,KARSHA,LINGSHET etc are so captivating that one doesn't want to go back.ZANSKAR is truly heaven on earth
