Ranka Monastery and Sikkimese Food near Gangtok, India

When I was visiting Gangtok, India, one day we decided to take a day trip to visit the Ranka Monastery, a Buddhist Tibetan monastery located just a 45 minute drive from Gangtok city center. To get there you can take a shared jeep which departs from near the police headquarters. You just have to ask for the jeep heading towards Ranka Monastery and you'll be directed to the correct one. You then have to wait until the jeep is full until you depart - but depending on the time of day that should only take 15 minutes or less.
The road was winding and slow to get there, and because the road doesn't go all the way to the monastery, the jeep dropped us off about a 20 minute walk or so from the Ranka Monastery. From the road we walked, veering to the right until we reached the gate. Then there was about a 10 minute uphill climb until we reached the monastery.
Once we arrived, it was peaceful and quiet, just a few young monks running around and practicing their kung fu moves. It was great to walk around in silence to to observe the intricate detailed paintings at the monastery. When we arrived the main sanctuary wasn't open, but after asking a monk, he gladly opened it up so we could take a look inside. Though they didn't allow any photo inside, it was also neatly decorated and quite a sight.
After walking around Ranka Monastery for an hour or so, we were extremely hungry, and luckily there's a restaurant located right next to the monastery - a restaurant that serves excellent Sikkimese Tibetan food. The menu isn't extensive, but you'll find great momos and good bowls of thukpa noodle soup.
Ranka Monastery, along with the even more famous Rumtek Monastery, are very interesting sites to visit near Gangtok, India. If you have a spare day, they are each worth a visit, and don't forget to grab a Sikkimese meal at the restaurant while you're at it!

Lingdum Monastery or Ranka Monastery near Gangtok
Lingdum monastry or Ranka monastery is about 20 kms from Gangtok. The road condition was very poor and the journey took 2 hours for one side. This is a huge monastery and very famous from religious point of view. This depicts the practices of Zurmang Kagud lineage. There are a large number of monks staying inside the monastery. This is one of the largest and most beautiful monasteries not only in Sikim but in the whole in India. There is no entry fee or any restriction to visit or photograph in the monastery. Unlike Rumtek monastery (where you find army guards everywhere) here you feel more comfortable to visit. There is a large prayer hall inside the monastery and beautiful Buddha idol worshiped inside the prayer hall.
Thre is a beautiful stupa outside the monastery campus- just 50 meters away. The stupa is so beautifully decorated. I would say this to be the most beautiful Stupa (chorten) in India. You can take pictures of monastery and the stupa without restriction. If you are going Gangtok never ignore to visit this place.

GANGTOK SIGHTSEEING | RUMTEK MONASTERY | RANKA MONASTERY | SIKKIM PART-5
. Ranka or Lingdum Monastery: About 45 minutes drive from Gangtok, set up on a hill and one of the most wonderful monasteries in east Sikkim.
2. Ban Jhakri Waterfall: A great waterfall in a landscaped forest garden. The place is an excellent picnic spot for families.
3. Rumtek Monastery: The most famous monastery with grand Tibetan architecture. It was designed after the original one in Tibet. An additional attraction here is the Golden Stupa.
4. Nehru Botanical Garden: This is near Rumtek. There is a concrete pathway to take a stroll through the garden with many subtropical trees & plantations. There is a large nursery here for growing Orchids of many types. It also has a children's playground, swings etc. Overall a nice picnic spot. But for the purpose of this tour, you should not spend much time here as time will otherwise run out for the other sights.
5. Shanti View Point: A viewing area near Rumtek. Spend a few minutes to watch the great views of Gangtok township at the opposite mountain.
6. Enchey Monastery: An old renowned monastery founded in 1800s.

#Ranka Monastery,#lingdum monastery Budda temple Gangtok sikkim
Ranka Monastery (also known as Lingdum Monastery) which is located about 20kms from Gangtok town is one of the most wonderful monasteries in east Sikkim. The monastery is spread out in a vast area with great scenic views. Since it's relatively a new monastery and does not have much historical or strategic significance like Rumtek Monastery, it is not much talked about.
But I would personally give up several other attractions around Gangtok in order to make it to Ranka. No wonder several bollywood movies have this monastery featured.
The monastery follows the Zurmang Kagyud lineage of Buddhism and under the direction of the 12th successor of the lineage Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche. It's surrounded by forested mountains in all sides. This in my view has to be one of the most picture perfect monasteries in east Sikkim.
But the road to Ranka has been lying in treacherous condition since quite some time and the journey would be backbreaking. You should ideally take a larger vehicle like a Scorpio or Innova. However the rewards are also awesome for this 8km journey from Gangtok.
Unlike in Rumtek, there is no long uphill walk required in Ranka. Once you reach the car park, you will see series of prayer wheels fixed on a long wall. Enter through the main entrance into a large courtyard having a tall pillar like structure in the middle.
Ranka Monastery, Gangtok
The surrounding 2-storey building along the periphery of the courtyard has several classrooms where the young lamas undergo training. During breaks, the courtyard gets full with the young monks wearing their red & saffron robes ... it's a wonderful sight to see them so active, not only learning ways of Buddhism but also actively participating in upkeep of the monastery.
If you want, you can take pictures with them... they will be more than glad to pose with you. If you look at the 2nd floor balcony above, you will find senior lamas keeping a close eye on the activities of the younger ones. The best part is tourists are allowed free access to almost all parts of the monastery. You can freely roam about along with the monks.
Stairways from the courtyard lead up to the inner sanctum at an upper level. This is where the main monastery building is located. You can see the receding terraces of the building which ends with a beautiful pagoda top.
As you enter the prayer room you will see a huge golden statue of Buddha right ahead. There are low tables lying in rows where the lamas read their prayer books. The walls have intricate hand paintings and thankas hanging on them. There is an wooden donation box at the entrance to the prayer hall. Up on a hill and behind the main building, there is a retreat center where the lamas meditate.
Prayer Room, Ranka Monastery, Gangtok
Outside the prayer hall, stroll around in the extended terrace and get magnificent views of the mountains. The sunset view from the terrace is wonderful. From the inner sanctum at the upper level you can see the young lamas training and playing around in the courtyard below.
There is a restaurant and a nice gift & souvenir shop outside next to the car park. The restaurant claims that bollywood star Amir Khan took his lunch in this restaurant during a film shoot here. The restaurant serves Chinese food, north Indian food, momos, cold drinks etc. A decent place to take your lunch.

Ranka amusement park - Sikkim
A family trip to a top amusement park in Ranka in Sikkim is filled with rides, treats, activity and fun for the whole family.
Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim is tucked within the Himalayan foothills at an altitude on 5,800 feet facing Mt. Kanchenjungha. Gangtok is mostly chosen as a central point from where tourists travel to other spots of Sikkim and our trip to the Silk Route would commence from here.
Gangtok is a municipality, the capital and the largest town of the Indian state of Sikkim. It also is the headquarters of the East Sikkim district. Gangtok is located in the eastern Himalayan range, at an elevation of 1,650 m (5,410 ft). The town's population of 100,000 belongs to different ethnicities such as Nepali, Lepchas and Bhutia. Nestled within higher peaks of the Himalaya and enjoying a year-round mild temperate climate, Gangtok is at the centre of Sikkim's tourism industry.
Gangtok rose to prominence as a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site after the construction of the Enchey Monastery in 1840. In 1894, the ruling Sikkimese Chogyal, Thutob Namgyal, transferred the capital to Gangtok. In the early 20th century, Gangtok became a major stopover on the trade route between Lhasa in Tibet and cities such as Kolkata (then Calcutta) in British India. After India won its independence from Britain in 1947, Sikkim chose to remain an independent monarchy, with Gangtok as its capital. In 1975, after the integration with the union of India, Gangtok was made India's twenty-second state capital.

Visiting the Sacred Rumtek Monastery near Gangtok
Rumtek monastery is about 20 kms from Gangtok. (Rumtek is different direction from Ranka monastery, but you can combine them both in one trip). Once you leave the highway, the roads are in very bad condition. The vehicle can take very long time. Rumteck is a famous monastery - the main seat of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. The place is guarded by Indian army. The army people checked our ID card at the entrance gate before allowing us to enter into the monastery. You have to pay Rs 10 towards entrance fee and buy the tickets to visit the monastery. As there are armed soldiers at every corner of the monastery you feel very cautious like visiting a live fort. The original structure was contructed in 18th century. The current structure was built in 1959. There are two rumtek monasteries, old and new, but the newer one is the attraction. The older one is largely for monks. The new monastry is very large. There is a large courtyard and structures aound it. We visited the Buddha temple inside which was extremely beautiful. We also climbed to the top of the roof where we got beautiful views of the mountains. After visiting the monastery we went to another campus on the back side where we saw the golden stupa. The golden stupa is preserved in a small temple guarded by the army.
You can visit Jawaharlal Neheru botanical Garden which is on the way while going to Rumtek monastery. This is a garden with various plants, flowers etc. Nothing special to see here as the Himalayan plants are there everywhere. Shanti view point is also another attraction on the way to Rumtek. This is a small place to halt, view and proceed. You get beautiful views of Gangtok city from here. The city is really beautiful as the huge mountains look fully covered with buildings.
Rumtek Monastery at Gangtok | Gangtok Tourist Attraction
Rumtek Monastery at Gangtok is the greatest tourist attraction of Gangtok, Sikkim, India. Rumtek Monastery also called the Dharmachakra Centre. It is a gompa located 24 km away from Gangtok, Sikkim, India. The Karma Shri Nalanda Institute for higher Buddhist studies and the famous Golden Stupa is also situated in the Rumtek Monastry premise.
