Rano Kau, Easter Island - Chile
The Rano Kau is one of the three main volcanic cones that gave origin to Easter Island (Rapa Nui). Time Lapse.
Day 8 - Rano Kau & Rano Raraku Easter Island | Chile Travel Vlog
Today on Easter island we hiked 9km to the top of the volcano Rano Kau. In the afternoon the reason for going to the island became a reality seeing the Moai heads at Rano Raraku. A dream to see in person and one I will never forget.

Hiking Rano Kau & the Rapa Nui Village of Orongo | Easter Island, Chile
Our second full day on Easter Island was full of sun, hiking and exploring ancient Rapa Nui (indigenous Polynesians in Easter Island) villages. Firstly, we slightly (massively!) overestimated the hike from Hanga Roa to Rano Kau. But luckily, a German Shepherd puppy we named Gary joined us on the whole trek up! After admiring the cool volcanic crater, we headed over to Orongo village. This is an ancient village which was used to celebrate the crazy bird man festival of the Rapa Nui. After the long walk down, with Gary by our side of course, we explored the seaside Ahus near Hanga Roa and had some amazing South American dinner! We then headed off the next day, on our flight to Santiago.

Rano Kau Extinct Volcano on Easter Island / Rapa Nui / Isla De Pascua
Rano Kau is a 324 m (1,063 ft) tall extinct volcano that forms the southwestern headland of Easter Island, a Chilean island in the Pacific Ocean. It was formed of basaltic lava flows in the Pleistocene with its youngest rocks dated at between 150,000 and 210,000 years ago.
Rano Kau has a crater lake which is one of the island's only three natural bodies of fresh water. Most of the volcano is on the coast and has been eroded back to form high sea cliffs which at one point have started to bite into the crater wall. On its northern side, the volcano slopes down to Mataveri International Airport.
Rano Kau is in the world heritage site of Rapa Nui National Park and gives its name to one of the seven sections of the park. The principal archaeological site on Rano Kau is the ruined ceremonial village of Orongo which is located at the point where the sea cliff and inner crater wall converge. One ahu with several moai was recorded on the cliffs at Rano Kau in the 1880s, but had fallen to the beach by the time of the Routledge expedition in 1914.
As well as basalt, it contains several other igneous rocks including obsidian (for which it was one of the major sources for the island's stoneworkers) and pumice.
The crater is almost a mile across and has its own micro climate. Sheltered from the winds that wet most of the rest of the island, figs and vines flourish at Rano Kau. The inner slope was the site of the last toromiro tree in the wild until the specimen was chopped down for firewood in 1960.

Rano Raraku - Easter Island, Chile
We visited Rano Raraku, which was the 'factory' of Moai, you can see many Moais buried in the ground. I definitely suggest visiting this place.

???????? Rano Kau, Rapa Nui, Easter Island (Chile)
Before going to Rapa Nui, a friend who is more than aware of my let’s-see-what’s-behind-that-forest” exploration attitude:
- It’s important that you do not to leave the official trails and do not to go anywhere a tourist shouldn’t go.
- Okay ????
.
First day on Rapa Nui, at the Rano Kau volcano crater:
- And what’s down there, in the crater?
- It’s really beautiful there… There’s a forest, and an infinitely deep lagoon.. or swamp… And you can swim there… And floating islands, that you can move around to walk over to the next one… And there are rocks with petroglyphs…
- Have you been there?
- Yes, many times.
- So it’s allowed?
- For a rapanui, yes.
- And for me?
- Only if you go with me.
- When do we go? ????
- Whenever you want!
- Thursday before the sunrise, and then let's go ????!

The volcanic caldera of Rano Kau. We stop off at an overlook that looks down into the crater lake, Bill explains that years ago this is where all the women used to go once a year and stay for a week or two to do their laundry. From this viewpoint you could see the full circle of the volcano.

The Moai statue, which retains the secrets of Easter Island, has reached over 1,000 that have been unearthed so far. Why did you build so many moai? The first place we headed is Ranokau. It is a crater made of Easter Island volcanic activity and can be reached by car in the village of Hangaroa for about 15 minutes. Lanokau is the largest extinct volcano in the three Easter islands, Rano means volcano and cow means wide. The crater on the summit of 300 meters above sea level is 1.6 km in diameter and shows the volcanic activity of the ancient times. This is Ranokau. But the original name is Poko Poko Haumaka. There are three volcanoes on the island, and one of them is Ranokau. It's exactly what the crater looks like. There is Poike volcano there. And there is Rano Aroi district. The island of the triangle created by the eruption of the volcanoes is Rafanu. Ranokau's majesty comes as a surprise. Traveling here is filled with magical inspiration. We had to come here because this is an ancestral land. It is fantastic to be able to see the wonders of this nature.

Rano Raraku's Crater, Easter Island - Chile
Rano Raraku is a volcanic crater located in the Rapa Nui National Park on Easter Island. Rano Raraku was the Moai quarry for about 500 years until the early eighteenth century.
