Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park in Jodhpur - Marwar | Mehrangarh Museum Trust
Rao Jodha Park is still a very young refuge for wild plants and it will be some years before you can expect to see mature trees, grasses and shrubs. The rocks that everyone knows in Jodhpur as Mehrangarh is Vindhyan sandstone.
But in the meantime, do pay special attention to the wonderful ephemerals that spring up in the rains. They provide the colour and the verve - the raunaq - in our Park. - Pradip Krishen
Ranisar and Padamsar, both lakes are designed to capture the scarce rainwater. Restored and maintained by Maharaja H.H Gaj Singh II for the people of Jodhpur, Marwar.
Rock is even more unforgiving than sand and that is why scientists use a special term - 'lithophyte' - to describe plants that are able to eke out a living in rocky habitats.
Desert rock is a harsh, difficult environment and most plants that are able to survive here, have to be specially equipped in some way to deal with extremely low levels of moisture.
Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park has one plot of salty sand and some wet areas, so it's not exclusively about rock-adapted plants, but in most respects, it is a park featuring lithophytes from the Thar Desert. There is clearly a 'best time' to visit the Park and a 'less good' time. Late July to October is when the ephemerals are at their best. Some of the hardier ones could still be in flower in December, but by this time most will have made no-nonsense preparations for dropping their seeds and shipping out.
The rest of the year is by no means devoid of interest. Thhor and Rohido flower extravagantly in February or March. A number of perennials like Kumativo burst into flower as soon as the rains arrive. There is usually something or the other going on at all times of the year.
Remember to come back in 10 years' time!

Would you dare to walk here alone? Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park | Jodhpur Travel Guide |
This video is about my travel to Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park. This place is one of the hidden sightseeing of Jodhpur. The area in and around the park contains distinctive volcanic rock and sandstone formations. There are four trails (yellow, green, red, and blue trails), about 880 m to 1115 m long, that visitors can take and trained guides I found Rao Jodha Rock Park as one of the exciting walking trail that can be done by all age group. The children enjoyed the 1 km trail. The first part of the trail was between the rocks and then followed by the jungle where one can hear sound of birds, insects and water in the second part.

RAO JODHA DESERT ROCK PARK, SPREADS OVER 72 HECTARES, NEAR THE HISTORIC MEHRANGARH FORT IN JODHPUR, RAJASTHAN, INDIA. THE PARK CONTAINS ECOLOGICALLY RESTORED DESERT AND ARID LAND VEGETATION.THE PARK WAS CREATED IN 2006 TO TRY AND RESTORE THE NATURAL ECOLOGY OF A LARGE, ROCKY AREA ADJOINING AND BELOW THE FORT. IT WAS OPENED TO THE PUBLIC IN FEBRUARY 2011. THE AREA IN AND AROUND THE PARK CONTAINS DISTINCTIVE VOLCANIC ROCK AND SANDSTONE FORMATIONS. THE PARK INCLUDES A VISITORS CENTRE WITH INTERPRETATION GALLERY, A NATIVE PLANT NURSERY. THERE ARE FOUR TRAILS (YELLOW, GREEN, RED, AND BLUE TRAILS), ABOUT 880 M TO 1115 M LONG .
GEOLOGY
THE VOLCANIC ROCKS AT RAO JODHA DESERT ROCK PARK WERE FORMED SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 745 AND 680 MILLION YEARS AGO. THE VOLCANIC FORMATIONS ARE CHIEFLY RHYOLITE, WITH WELDED TUFF, AND BRECCIA FOUND IN SOME AREAS. THERE IS A GULLY PASSING THROUGH THE PARK (AN OLD AQUEDUCT OR CANAL TO CARRY RAINWATER FROM A WIDER CATCHMENT IN THE NORTH TO PADAMSAR LAKE AT THE BASE OF THE FORT), WHERE BRECCIA IS VISIBLE TODAY. ALSO SEEN ARE ROCKS WITH LARGE TO INTERMEDIATE CRYSTAL SIZES AND FROM FINE TEXTURED TUFF TO LARGE-GRAINED (PORPHYRITIC) RHYOLITE.
PLANT AND ANIMAL LIFE
THE PARK HAS AROUND 250 SPECIES OF NATIVE PLANTS, INCLUDING A LARGE NUMBER OF ARID REGION LITHOPHYTES. SOME OF THE COMMON PLANTS INCLUDE TREES SUCH AS ROHIDO (TECOMELLA UNDULATA), KUMATIYO (ACACIA SENEGAL), HINGOTO (BALANITES ROXBURGHII), PEELOO (SALVADORA PERSICA), KHARO JAAL (SALVADORA OLEOIDES), SARGOORO (MORINGA CONCANENSIS), GOONDI (CORDIA GHARAF), AND BORDI (ZIZIPHUS NUMMULARIA). AMONG SHRUBS, THE LEAFLESS SPURGE OR THHOR (EUPHORBIA CADUCIFOLIA) IS ONE OF THE COMMON SUCCULENTS. OTHER SHRUBS INCLUDE BUI (AERVA JAVANICA), AAKADO (CALOTROPIS PROCERA), KAIR (CAPPARIS DECIDUA), GHATBOR (FLEUGGIA LEUCOPYRUS), KHEER KHEEMP (SARCOSTEMMA ACIDUM), KHEEMP (LEPTADENIA PYROTECHNICA), AND GOOGAL (COMMIPHORA WIGHTII).
RESTORATION
THE RAO JODHA DESERT ROCK PARK HAS ATTEMPTED BOTH ARCHITECTURAL AND ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION. THE VISITORS CENTRE IS HOUSED IN SINGHORIA POL, A 17TH-CENTURY GATEWAY INTO JODPUR CITY, WHICH HAD FALLEN INTO RUINS AND DISREPAIR. THE GATEWAY WAS RESTORED AND THE VISITORS CENTRE, COMPLETED IN FEBRUARY 2011, HAS AN INTERPRETATION GALLERY ABOUT THE DESERT, PLANTS, AND HISTORY, INTEGRATED INTO THE PASSAGES AND ROOMS OVER AND AROUND THE GATE. THE HISTORIC CITY WALL THAT HAD CRUMBLED IN PLACES WAS ALSO RESTORED, WHICH ASSISTED IN PROTECTING THE AREA FROM GRAZING LIVESTOCK DURING ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION.
ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION WAS CARRIED OUT TO REMOVE INVASIVE ALIEN PLANTS AND BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL DESERT AND ARID LAND VEGETATION OF THE REGION. THE PARK AREA WAS EARLIER OVERRUN BY PROSOPIS JULIFLORA (LOCAL NAME BAAVLIA), AN INVASIVE, THORNY SHRUB INTRODUCED FROM CENTRAL AMERICA ALMOST A CENTURY AGO. THE PROSOPIS JULIFLORA WAS CAREFULLY REMOVED FROM THE VOLCANIC ROCKS WITH THE HELP OF LOCAL KHANDWALIYA PEOPLE, EXPERT IN ROCK CHISELING. THE PARK NOW HAS AROUND 250 SPECIES OF NATIVE PLANTS. A SMALL 'XERISCAPE' OR 'XERI GARDEN' AT THE VISITOR'S CENTRE HAS BEEN CREATED TO DISPLAY A RANGE OF XERIC AND ROCKY MICROHABITATS, EACH WITH SEVERAL CHARACTERISTIC NATIVE PLANT SPECIES. THE RESTORATION OR REWILDING PROJECT HAS BEEN SPEARHEADED BY PRADIP KRISHEN, INDIAN FILMMAKER AND ENVIRONMENTAL
Is it difficult for kids to complete this trial ? | Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park | Part 2 | Jodhpur
Second part of Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park is even more interesting. This part begins with greenery with plants and trees on both the sides of the trail. You can experience beautiful sound of birds, animals and nature over here. This is the only reason why I didn't put much background music in this video. This park is not only for trekkers but also designed for kids so that they can get a taste of a trek that too with complete safety.
It is definitely a must visit place for travelers especially families. I did only yellow trail because of time constraint. However, you can experience all 4 trails if you have a long stay at Jodhpur.

Soil collection at the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park, Jodhpur
Denzil Britto says We have several different types of soils in the Thar desert. They all have certain properties like some are very rich in salinity while some are very rich in iron and calcium. So, we have placed a few samples of soil collected from the Thar Desert. For that, we have to travel at times for certain kilometres maybe other districts and actually go into the place, pull the bags out, put in the sand and see what is happening in that area and carry the samples back to see what grows when the soil is here.

Sand stone or silt stone samples at Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park, Jodhpur
Denzil Britto says So what I need to show you here are these different types of rocks that were caused due to water at some period of time. If you can see, it's described here somewhere around 90 million years ago there used to be water, an ocean. There was a lot of soil and the water level started to deplete. For example, as you can see how the water must have carried the silt and started to deposit layer by layer. So these are all samples of sandstones which we picked up from various parts of Jaisalmer especially in the south-western part of Jaisalmer city.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park
How the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park came into being?
Denzil Britto says The Rao Jodha park started in 2006 and we started to work on the ground. First, the task was prepared in 2005 for the groundwork which started in 2006 around April. Our task was to remove the mesquite which was introduced as Mexican mesquite which we even call bablia in the local language.
