Kid City, Fort Smith NWT 1977-1979 Part 1
A video created by the Northern Life Museum - slides from my Dad's photo collection, and interview with my Dad (Jacques van Pelt) by CBC North.
This was THE best hands-on, imaginative playplace ever. I wish there were more of these Kid City's, or 'junk playgrounds' around these days. But then parents would decry it's 'risk of injury', it's too unsafe! The level of imaginative, hands-on play was extraordinary.
The kernel of the idea for Kid City was taken from Europe/Denmark, after WWII, kids were playing in the rubble, which then became more organized into 'junk playgrounds.
