ROMANIA: EXPLORING the MEDIEVAL CITADEL and FORT of RASNOV ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the Râșnov Fortress (Romanian: Cetatea Râșnov) which is a historic monument and landmark in Romania. It is situated in Râşnov, Brașov County, in the immediate vicinity of Brașov. The fortress was built as part of a defence system for the Transylvanian villages exposed to outside invasions. A decisive aspect for building the fortress at its location was the route of the invading armies which were coming from the Bran pass and were passing through Râșnov, on their way to Braşov and other parts of the Burzenland region. The only chance of survival for the inhabitants of the area, including from Cristian and Ghimbav, was the refuge inside the refuge castle at Râşnov. Compelled to stay there for decades, the people of Râșnov and the nearby villages turned the fortification into their long-term place of residence.
Romania is a southeastern European country known for the forested region of Transylvania, ringed by the Carpathian Mountains. Its preserved medieval towns include Sighişoara, and there are many fortified churches and castles, notably clifftop Bran Castle, long associated with the Dracula legend. Bucharest, the country’s capital, is the site of the gigantic, Communist-era Palatul Parlamentului government building.

JTS | Rasnov Medieval Citadel | Visit Romania
About Rasnov - Romania - It was once part of the saxon region called Burzenland. However, the city is much older, dating from Thracian-Roman times. It is home to a freshly restored Saxon fortress from the 14th century, and also to many old Saxon houses. In German the name of the town is Rosenau, which means rose meadow. There are about 15,000 inhabitants who live right next to a huge forest that leads up the mountains. The river Ghimbasel (german: Burzen) crosses the town. Those who rush through Brasov county, stop by to see the fortress, but many people take the time to stay here for a few days and enjoy its blend of nature and fun.

A Trip to Rasnov Citadel in Romania
During my trip to Brasov in Romania I made a quick visit to the nearby Rasnov Citadel.
The Rasnov Citadel is a historic and cultural monument and landmark in the Transylvania region of Romania and it's somewhere that you're definitely going to want to check out if you're spending any time in the area.
The Citadel was built as part of a defense system for the nearby Transylvanian villages. The nearby Bran Pass was a popular Invasion route for armies hoping to make their way into the area so the location of the Citadel proved to be effective at providing defense for the pass.
Right below the Citadel is a small village, Rasnov, and it developed alongside the Citadel as the people working there needed somewhere to live and farm that wasn't located inside the fortress itself.
These days it's possible to visit the Citadel for a few hours and learn more about the history of the region. The entrance fee is quite reasonable and you can easily spend a few hours wandering around exploring the structure and admiring the amazing view from the top.

RASNOV CITADEL // CETATEA RASNOV // Brasov, Romania
I am originally a Romanian and I live in Cluj-Napoca but I visited Brasov City in January 2019. I wanted to show foreigners that my country is really beautiful and full of history even though it has a bad promotion (most of what is said is UNTRUE). Rasnov Citadel is a very important monument dating from the 14th century, where the Teutonic Order was.

When researching about Romania, one of the tourist attractions we were most excited to see was Bran Castle. Whilst looking up information about taking a day trip to Bran Castle, we came across quite a few posts suggesting that you combine both a trip to Bran and Rasnov in a single day trip. I am so glad we took the advice of the internet hive mind, and visited Rasnov, because I may have enjoyed Rasnov Citadel even more that Bran Castle (shhhhhhh).

Cetatea Rasnov || Incredible Romania [4K]
Situated on the Brasov-Rucar-Campulung road, Rasnov Citadel is one of the best preserved rustic citadels from Transylvania. Rasnov Citadel was at first called “Rustic Citadel”, because the main occupation of its constructors was agriculture. The rustic fortresses were part of a defending system of the Transylvanian places that were exposed to invaders’ attacks. The citadel was first mentioned in documents in 1335, when Burzenland was again ravaged by the Tartarian armies, except for two fortresses: Tampa and Rasnov. These two couldn’t be conquered.

It is really worth going up to the top and enjoying the view from the top.

Cetatea Râșnov - Râşnov Citadel - Braşov - Romania, June 2017
Rasnov Fortress is the fortified ensemble located on the limestone hill, located in the south of Rasnov in Brasov County, one of the best preserved fortified ensembles in Transylvania.
Râşnov Citadel controlled through its strategic position the access to Transylvania from the Râşnoavei Valley. Given the importance of the mountain passers to the South Carpathian territories, Bran's road was monitored by the military after the chasing of the Teutonic knights, the Hungarian kingdom entrusting the fortification of Rasnov to the Knights of the Order of the Holy Cross. They were subordinated either to the Szeklers' committee or to the Transylvanian voivode. Until the transfer of the customs from Rucar to Bran and the construction of the Bran fortress to protect the royal customs at the end of the 14th century, the Rasnov Fortress was the first fortification near Bran's road after entering Transylvania.
In the upper part of Barsa Country, about 15 km south-west of the city of Braşov, on the old commercial road that connects - through Bran Pass - the old fortress of Braşov to the former capital of Wallachia, Câmpulung Muscel, lies the town of Râşnov, Often mentioned in medieval documents as a town-fair.
In connection with the inner fountain there is a legend (similar to that of the Hunyadi Castle). Thus the legend says that during a siege the Râşnovenii put two Turkish prisoners to dig a well in the middle of the fortress and assured them that once they finished the fountain they would be left to leave. Prisoners dug the fountain for 17 years when they wrote verses from the Qur'an on its walls (visible today). Their fate is not clear, some say they would have been left to go and others would have been executed after the fountain was over.

The legend of the well:
The absence of an internal water source led to the limitation of long term resistance during sieges. Because of this lack, it was decided to start the digging of a well in the rocky soil, in 1623.
The mythical well. The legend says that during a siege, the inhabitants of the citadel made two Turkish prisoners dig a well in the middle of the citadel in order to regain their freedom. The captives dug for 17 years, during which time they wrote verses from Quran on the well walls which can be seen even today. The fate of the prisoners isn't known, with some saying that they were released, and others that they were killed. The well was used until 1850 when a broken wheel in the well windlass caused its abandonment.
The elders from Râșnov believe that deep in the well lies a treasure at least 300 years old. However, recently alpinists have closely explored the well, without finding any trace of it.Wikipedia
