The Wonderful Temple of Borobudur, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko, Central Java - Indonesia
Borobudur, is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist Temple in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. The monument consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome. The temple is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The central dome is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues, each seated inside a perforated stupa. It is the world's largest Buddhist temple, as well as one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world.
The Prambanan temple is the largest Hindu temple of ancient Java, and the first building was completed in the mid-9th century. It was likely started by Rakai Pikatan as the Hindu Sanjaya Dynasty's answer to the Buddhist Sailendra Dynasty's Borobudur and Sewu temples nearby. Historians suggest that the construction of Prambanan probably was meant to mark the return of the Hindu Sanjaya Dynasty to power in Central Java after almost a century of Buddhist Sailendra Dynasty domination. The construction of this massive Hindu temple signifies that the Medang court had shifted its patronage from Mahayana Buddhism to Shivaist Hinduism.
Ratu Boko is an archaeological site known to modern Javanese as Kraton Ratu Boko or Ratu Boko's Palace. Ratu Boko is located on a plateau, about three kilometres south of Lara Jonggrang Prambanan temple complex in Yogyakarta Indonesia. The original name of this site is still unclear, however the local inhabitants named this site after King Boko, the legendary king mentioned in Loro Jonggrang folklore. In Javanese, Ratu Boko means Stork King.

Ratu Boko Temple -- Yogyakarta, East Java
Settled on a hillside plateau, overlooking Prambanan temple complex and with a view to Mount Merapi behind Prambanan Temple complex, lie the remains of a once grand palace. The palace (kraton) is named Ratu Boko after a King Boko of local folklore, but the real owner of the palace is more likely to have been a king of a local dynasty.
Ratu Boko temple is located on a plateau, about three kilometres south of Lara Jonggrang Prambanan temple complex in Yogyakarta Central Java, Indonesia. Grand stone gates, built on two levels, are the largest and most often photographed structures of the site, it is clear that these lead to what was once a settlement, which sets Ratu Boko apart from the other archeological sites in Central Java which are entirely religious in nature.
The site covers 16 hectares in two hamlets (Dawung and Sambireja) of the village of Bokoharjo and Prambanan. In striking contrast to other Classic-period sites in Central Java and Yogyakarta, which are remains of temples, Ratu Boko displays attributes of an occupation or settlement site, although its precise functions is unknown. Probably the site was a palace complex which belongs to the kings of Sailendra or Mataram Kingdom that also build temples scattered across Prambanan Plain.
In 1790 the Dutchman Van Boeckholtz found ruins, and over time research was done, and by 1838 the Dutch commenced restoration work. In 1952 the Indonesian government took the reigns, and has continued work since then.

The Nuance Around Ratu Boko Temple, Yogyakarta
Ratu Boko Palace is located in Jl. Raya Piyungan, 3 km south of Prambanan Temple at Dawung and Sambirejo villages, Piyungan, or 19 km east of Jogjakarta. It opens daily 6 am - 5.30 pm and it entrance fee charged.
Ratu Boko Palace is a huge complex built on 16 hectares as the residence of King Boko of the first Mataram dynasty. Local legend says that Ratu Boko liked to eat human flesh. Primarily in ruins, visitors must use their imaginations to fill in historical and structural gaps.
Gold plates inscribed with Buddhist mantras have been found here dating to 792 A.D, along with stupas and Bodhisattva statues, indicating that at one time it might have also been a monastery. However, Hindu remains such as lingga and Ganesha statues have also been discovered.
From the restored main entrance to the right is the Palace's audience hall that has been restored. On the left of the hall is a Keputren Pool (Princess' Bath) that was used as a bathing pool for women. Fragments of sculptures and bas-reliefs can be found around the pools: elephants, birds and snakes. Other partial structures are a crematory temple, now only a tall platform bordered by steps and surrounded by parapets; a pendopo (meeting hall) surrounded by a high rock fence with three entrance gates and water spouts outside the fence; a miniature Hindu temple with three small gates representing Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu; and the alun-alun, the town square. To the south of the complex are two caves, probably used for meditation.
The panoramic views surrounding the complex are breathtaking. On a clear morning, Mount Merapi and Prambanan and Kalasan temples are visible to the north, while to the south, the Indian Ocean is discernible in the distance.

Of all the things to do and see when visiting Java Indonesia, Prambanan Temple, along with Borobudur, is one of the not to be missed sites on your Indonesia sightseeing tour. Than main Prambanan temple complex and the nearby smaller Ratu Boko complex can be visited in one day from Yogyakarta, and you can buy a day ticket which includes entrance to both temple complexes and a return coach transfer from Prambanan to Batu Roko.
Prambanan is an ancient Hindu temple which was once destroyed by eruptions from nearby Mount Morepi, but is now being slowly restored and raised from the ruins. In this video I will show you how and where to buy your ticket, and give you an insight into the history of Prambanan.
When I visited in 2019 the combined ticket price for Prambanan and Rotu Bako was US$45, although you will pay in Indonesian Rupiah. At the time of my visit this worked out at Rp 75,000. For local visitors from Indonesia the price was Rp 35,000.

Terletak 3 KM dari kompleks candi Prambanan, yang berada di atas perbukitan dengan ketinggian 195,97 mDpl. Terdapat sebuah situs pemukiman yang telah ada sejak zaman kerajaan Mataram Kuno atau pada masa pemerintahan Rakai Panangkaran.
Dibangun pada abad VII - IX M, Situs “Keraton Ratu Boko”, pada waktu pertama kalinya, situs ini adalah sebuah kompleks wihara, sebagaimana tercatat dalam prasasti Abhayagiriwihara yang berangka tahun 792 M.
Sekitar tahun 856 M, situs ini berubah menjadi kediaman seorang penguasa bernama Rakai Walaing Pu Kumbhayoni yang memiliki latar belakang agama Hindu.
Situs Keraton Ratu Boko, merupakan sebuah situs pemukiman terbesar yang berada di tanah Jawa, khususnya Jawa bagian Tengah. Serta merupakan peninggalan sejarah yang memiliki unsur keagamaan beragam, Hinduisme dan Budhisme.

Hari ini saya berada di salah satu wisata yang ada di Yogyakarta yaitu Candi Prambanan & Ratu Boko.
Candi Prambanan merupakan candi Hindu yang terbesar di Indonesia. Kota Terdekat dari Prambanan adalah Yogyakarta (17 km barat daya) dan Klaten (3 km utara). Candi Prambanan gampang diakses karena berada di jalan raya Solo - Yogya.
Ratu Boko terletak sekitar 3 km ke arah selatan dari Candi Prambanan.
Belajar dari pengalaman di sana mungkin teman-teman lebih baik jalan ke Candi Prambanan & Ratu Boko sekitar jam 14:00 WIB atau menjelang sore. Dikarenakan waktu itu saya mulai jalannya jam 11:00 dan daerah sekitar panas sana banget.

Candi Prambanan & Kraton Ratu Boko Jogjakarta
Candi Prambanan terletak di lingkungan Taman Wisata Prambanan, kurang lebih 17 km ke arah timur dari Yogyakarta, tepatnya di Desa Prambanan Kecamatan Bokoharjo. Lokasinya hanya sekitar 100 m dari jalan raya Yogya-Solo, sehingga tidak sulit untuk menemukannya. Sebagian dari kawasan wisata yang yang terletak pada ketinggian 154 m di atas permukaan laut ini termasuk dalam wilayah Kabupaten Sleman. sedangkan sebagian lagi masuk dalam wilayah Klaten.
Situs seluas sekitar 25 ha ini bisa dibilang menjadi satu-satunya situs arkeologi yang memadukan arsitektur khas Hindu dan Budha. Terletak hanya sekitar 3 kilometer kearah selatan Candi Prambanan, tepatnya di kecamatan Bokoharjo, Kabupaten Sleman, Yogyakarta. Kira-kira 18 km sebelah timur Kota Yogyakarta atau 50 km barat daya Kota Solo.

Pemerintah pusat sekarang memasukkan kompleks Situs Ratu Boko ke dalam otorita khusus, bersama-sama dengan pengelolaan Candi Borobudur dan Candi Prambanan ke dalam satu BUMN yang bernama PT Taman Wisata Candi, setelah kedua candi terakhir ini dimasukkan dalam Daftar Warisan Dunia UNESCO. Sebagai konsekuensinya, Situs Ratu Boko ditata ulang pada beberapa tempat untuk dapat dijadikan tempat pendidikan dan kegiatan budaya.
