Rawhiti Cave New Zealand South Island
Rawhiti Cave is nationally significant as it has possibly the most diverse and extensive entrance - and twilight-zone flora of any cave in New Zealand.
ust after you leave the carpark you cross Dry River. From here, the marked route continues up the valley for 30 minutes and turns sharply right. It then climbs steeply for a further 30 minutes, zigzagging up to the cave entrance.
Phytokarst features include large numbers of stalactites as well as a series of large, old stalagmites which are growing towards the entrance of the cave.
There is a viewing platform just inside the cave entrance, with site interpretation. Please keep to the platform structure and marked track, to prevent any further damage to this fragile ecology.
Be aware of falling rocks and slippery surfaces, and do not linger at the cave entrance.
From Takaka, drive east towards Pohara Beach. At Motupipi turn right into Glenview Road and then left into Packard Road. Rawhiti Cave is signposted from near the end of Packard Road through private property to an informal carpark. Please leave the gates as you find them. It takes approximately 15 minutes to drive from Takaka to the carpark.
The last section of the track is steep and narrow: reasonable fitness and tramping experience are required for this section.
After heavy rain, Dry River is prone to flooding: do not attempt to cross in these conditions.

Rawhiti Cave - New Zealand
Rawhiti Cave is located near Golden Bay, on New Zealand's south island.
The cave's entrance is graced with thousands of stalactites that cover the entire ceiling.
It takes about an hour to walk a moderately difficult trail to the cave's entrance, but it is well worth it.

Inside Rawhiti Cave in New Zealand
Inside Rawhiti Cave, located in the Takaka area in the Nelson/Tasman region of New Zealand. The cave features amazing examples of phytokarst, a phenomenon in which mosses and algae and calcium work together to grow stalactites and stalagmites. The plants grow faster on the sunlit side, causing the stalactites to grow toward the light.

A walk in the Rawhiti Cave!
The Simple Life - Being one with nature.
The Rawhiti cave, is a massive cave located in Takaka, New Zealand. For the indigenous Māori of New Zealand this cave used to be a sacred place for rituals, ceremonies and celebrations.
The ancient indigenous cultures always praised Mother Earth and worshipped the life giving force.
They saw her as a living entity, that should be cared for.
Being one with nature is a huge part of The Simplicity Movement and taking a walk in the peaceful surroundings of nature, helps us relax and find inner peace.
Being one with ourselves.
It is therefore taking care of ourselves and an act of self-love.
We must preserve these sacred places in nature.

Harwood (or Harwood's) Hole is a cave system located in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It is one of several important cave systems in Takaka Hill, between Golden Bay and Tasman Bay. Starting at the surface as a 50 metre round entrance and descending 183 metres, Harwood Hole is New Zealand's deepest vertical shaft. Further in it connects with Starlight Cave. The long rope descent is considered one of the most spectacular parts of the caving experience at Harwood's. Harwood's Hole has an overall depth of 357 m.
