श्री सत्‍य साईं बाबा का जन्‍मस्‍थान अनंतपुर आंध्र प्रदेश का सबसे पश्चिमी जिला है जो एक ओर इतिहास और आधुनिकता का संगम दिखाता है और दूसरी ओर तीर्थस्‍थान और किलों के दर्शन कराता है। राज्‍य का सबसे बड़ा जिला अनंतपुर 19130 वर्ग किलोमीटर क्षेत्र में फैला है। यह पूरा जिला अपने रेशम व्‍यापार के आधुनिक रूप के लिए जाना जाता है। पर्यटन की बात करें तो लिपाक्षी मंदिर यहां का प्रमुख आकर्षण है। सन 1800 ई तक अनंतपुर ईस्ट इंडिया कम्पनी का प्रमुख केन्द्र था। अनंतपुर का सम्बन्ध थामस मुनरो से भी रहा है, जो यहाँ का प्रथम कलेक्टर था। अनंतपुर के समीप लेपाक्षी ग्राम अपने अद्भुत भित्ति चित्रोंयुक्त मंदिरों के लिए प्रसिद्ध है।
लिपाक्षी मंदिर
लिपाक्षी वास्‍तव में एक छोटा सा गांव है जो अनंतपुर के हिंदूपुर का हिस्‍सा है। यह गांव अपने कलात्‍मक मंदिरों के लिए जाना जाता है जिनका निर्माण 16वीं शताब्‍दी में किया गया था। विजयनगर शैली के मंदिरों का सुंदर उदाहरण लिपाक्षी मंदिर है। विशाल मंदिर परिसर में भगवान शिव, भगवान विष्‍णु और भगवान वीरभद्र को समर्पित तीन मंदिर हैं। भगवान वीरभद्र का रौद्रावतार है। भगवान शिव नायक शासकों के कुलदेवता थे। लिपाक्षी मंदिर में नागलिंग के संभवत: सबसे बड़ी प्रतिमा स्‍थापित है। भगवान गणेश की मूर्ति भी यहां आने वाले सैलानियों का ध्‍यान आकर्षित करती है।
पेनुकोंडा किला
इस विशाल किले का हर पत्‍थर उस समय की शान को दर्शाता है। पेनुकोंडा अनंतपुर जिले का एक छोटा का नगर है। प्राचीन काल में यह विजयनगर राजाओं के दूसरी राजधानी के रूप में प्रयुक्‍त होता था। पहाड़ की चोटी पर बना यह किला नगर का खूबसूरत दृश्‍य प्रस्‍तुत करता है। अनंतपुर से 70 किलोमीटर दूर यह किला कुर्नूल-बंगलुरु रोड पर स्थित है। किले के अंदर शिलालेखों में राजा बुक्‍का प्रथम द्वारा अपने पुत्र वीरा वरिपुन्‍ना उदियार को शासनसत्‍ता सौंपने का जिक्र मिलता है। उनके शासनकाल में इस किले का निर्माण हुआ था। किले का वास्‍तु इस प्रकार का था कि कोई भी शत्रु यहां तक पहुंच नहीं पाता था। येरामंची द्वार से प्रवेश करने पर भगवान हनुमान की 11 फीट ऊंची विशाल प्रतिमा दिखाई पड़ती है। 1575 में बना गगन महल शाही परिवार का समर रिजॉर्ट था। पेनुकोंडा किले के वास्‍तुशिल्‍प में हिदु और मुस्लिम शैली का संगम देखने को मिलता है।
रायदुर्ग किला
रायदुर्ग किले का विजयनगर साम्राज्‍य के इतिहास में महत्‍वपूर्ण स्‍थान है। किले के अंदर अनेक किले हैं और दुश्‍मनों के लिए यहां तक पहुंचना असंभव था। इसका निर्माण समुद्र तल से 2727 फीट की ऊंचाई पर किया गया था। मूल रूप से यह बेदारों का गढ़ था जो विजयनगर के शासन में शिथिल हो गया। आज भी पहाड़ी के नीचे किले के अवशेष देखे जा सकते हैं। माना जाता है कि किले का निर्माण जंग नायक ने करवाया था। किले के पास चार गुफाएं भी हैं जिनके द्वार पत्‍थर के बने हैं और इन पर सिद्धों की नक्‍काशी की गई है।
किले के आसपास अनेक मंदिर भी हैं जैसे नरसिंहस्‍वामी, हनुमान और एलम्‍मा मंदिर। यहां भक्‍तों का आना-जाना लगा रहता है। इसके अलावा प्रसन्‍ना वैंकटेश्‍वर, वेणुगोपाल, जंबुकेश्‍वर, वीरभद्र और कन्‍यकपरमेश्‍वरी मंदिर भी यहां हैं।
