JAPAN : Kanazawa - Shirakawa Go
Call me odd, call me wasted, call me however you want it, but I will state clearly this:
I LOVE KANAZAWA AMONG ANY OTHER CITY I'VE VISITED IN THIS JAPAN TRIP!!
Kanazawa is a small and unpopular destination compared to some other big cities. Kanazawa offers warmth, friendliness, and expirience that is new to me. I tought we will only transit in Kanazawa for the sake of going to Shirakawa Go. But surely I would love to spend more days here or revisit this beautiful part of Japan.
We took shinkansen from Kyoto to Kanazawa and walked from the train station to our inn. In Kanazawa it is more practical to use bike than busses or train (yaaaaassshhh!!!). Fortunately our inn provided free bike during our stay. Directly, after put our luggage in, we rode to 21st century of contemporary art museum. Yes, that shuper hype spot in town! Shall you not be mistaken, that apart from this museum, Kanazawa offers many pretty architectural landmarks that will directly made you Europeanized! Sadly that rain poured pretty often when we were here and our days in Kanazawa was short :)
FYI, Kanazawa is much much cheaper than Takayama if you need to transit before Shirakawa Go. But not any less pretty :)
The next day was dedicated to explore Shirakawa Go, the UNESCO heritage area. Shirakawa Go is a small area to explore, but you need to dedicate 1 whole day (by this, I mean get the earliest bus from Kanazawa and back from Shirakawa at about 4pm-ish to reach Kanazawa at dinner time). Shirakawa Go may offered udon with abundant leek. There are not much place to dine and bringing your own food may be a good idea. Remember to keep the vicinity clean by keep your trash in hands until you find trashbin. The central part of Shirakawa Go is dedicated for traditional houses exploration (with per person entry fee) and few of food and snack stalls.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen
The Hokuriku Shinkansen service between Tokyo and Kanazawa, on the west coast of Honshu, started in 2015. This is the W7 series trainset with 12 cars, capable of reaching 275km/h. It's possible to do the 450km distance in just 2.5hrs, while crossing the Japanese Alps.
Book of Seasons - Summer in Kanazawa
Many of these traditional vegetables reach maturity during summer, which in Kanazawa is a season of intense sunlight and heat, slowing down the rhythms of the city. Gastronomy is an important part of the colourful festivities bringing people together on summer nights, after the relentless heat has subsided. Some of these festivities focus specifically on agricultural production, and belong to a complex annual ceremonial cycle rooted in culture-specific views of nature.
A different interplay of biological and cultural diversity can be observed in the case of recreational river fishing practised in Kanazawa in summer. Summer fishing for sweetfish ( ayu) in Kanazawa's rivers shows how recreational practices, cultural heritage values and a sense of beauty can converge in food production activities.

Kanazawa - Omicho Market, Kanazawa Castle, Kenrokuen, Higashichaya-District
Day 22 - Kanazawa
This was a very long but fun day, and one in which we were glad we didn't have to take a train everywhere.
We started the day in Omicho Market. While smaller than Nishiki Market in Kyoto, there were plenty of fresh fruits and seafood on sale. We bought some oranges as we had not been consuming much fruits as of late.
We walked through the Kanazawa castle grounds to reach Kenrokuen, one of the most well-known gardens in Japan. However, due to the snow, it didn't quite have the same impact as per some of the pictures I had seen of this previously. It was still beautiful and worth going, but it warrants a return when the weather is much warmer.
We went to Ninjadera following Kenrokuen, but I was unable to take any good videos from the temple, and hence I did not upload any. We then took a bus to Higashichaya District and explored the area. We walked through another Chaya district before walking back to our accommodation to end the busiest day we had since Fukuoka.

What Should I Eat In Kanazawa? ????????????????

I asked the locals what I should eat here in Kanazawa and everyone told me to eat a famous fish called, Nodoguro. I got a little lost in the streets and someone ended up pointing me to this restaurant, Nodoguro Honpo Itaru (のど黒めし本舗 いたる). I ordered the Nodoguro meshi (のどぐろめし), which serves the famous fish over a bed of rice in a hot cast iron pot.
The meal comes with a fun English menu showing you three ways to eat the dish:
1 - Eat as is with rice
2 - Add garnishes (chives, wasabi, sesame seeds)
3 - Top it all off with some rich nodoguro fish stock
It was very delicious and loved the overall dining experience. They played jazz in the background and I loved the dark wood-paneled decor. If you're ever in Kanazawa, you should definitely check this place out! =)
Furansu Cocktail Bar - Kanazawa, Japan
Some of the best cocktails in Kanazawa. Furansu (France in Japanese) is a cocktail bar run by three brothers who are half Japanese half French. Located on Kiguramachi street near downtown, this bar is a a cosy foreigner friendly place taking no charge, great for a drink with friends or family. The original cocktail menu runs deep, using fresh ingredients and unique combinations, and the appetizer menu is super good. Whether you’re by yourself, with a friend, and got a big group, Furansu is a great cocktail bar with tasty drinks, delicious food, good music and Kanazawa vibes.
Hours: 8pm-3am Fri. Sat., 8pm-2am Sun-Thurs.
Closed: Wednesdays

High speed shinkansen passes
High speed shinkansen passes
The shinkansen high-speed trains are the fastest way to discover all of Japan, reaching a speed of 320 km/h (199 mph). The Japan Railways (JR) network, which can be accessed by the Japan Rail Pass, practically covers all the country, with the addition of the new Hokkaido Shinkansen, and the popular Tokaido Shinkansen.
There are many lines of Shinkansen in Japan. This scheme will help you to understand the shinkansen network. There are all covered by the Japan Rail Pass except Nozomi and Mizuho Trains.
The Hokuriku Shinkansen have four different types of shinkansen. Travel to Kanazawa in just 2h30 ! The Asama runs between Tokyo and Nagano, The Kagayaki and Hakutaka between Tokyo and Kanazawa ( kagayaki being the faster), and the Tsurugi between Toyama and Kanazawa.
The Joetsu Shinkansen has two different types of shinkansen : the Toki is the fastest between Tokyo and Niigata (about 2h). Some Toki use 2-story train sets and are known as MAX Toki. The Tanigawa is serving all stations between Tokyo and Echigo-Yuzawa station. During the winter, some trains serve Gala Yukawa station ( access to Gala Yukawa ski resort).
The Yamagata Shinkansen has only one category of train called Tsubasa, running between Tokyo and Shin-jo in 3h30. The Torei-yu Tsubasa in a very unique train running mainly on week -ends between Fukushima and Shinjo.
The Akita Shinkansen has only one category of train called Komachi, which is only with reserved seat.
The Tohoku shinkansen has two different shinkansen : the Yamabiko is the fastest running as far north as Morioka, although some terminate at Sendai. The Nasuno is the slowest one and serves all the station between Tokyo and Koriyama.
The Hokkaido Shinkansen has two different shinkansen : the Hayabusa reach Shin Hakodate and Hokkaido in 4 hours and 2 minutes with the fastest train and all seats has to be reserved. The Hayate operates one return service per day between Morioka and Shin Hakodate and one return service between Shin Aomori and Shin Hakodate.
The Tokaido Shinkansen has three types of trains. The Nozomi is the fastest train and reach Kyoto from Tokyo in 2h40 ( only stopping at Shinagawa, Shin Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto ans Shin Osaka).
Along Sanyo Shinkansen Nozomi connects Hakata and Hiroshima.
The Hikari is the second fastest bullet trains, taking about three hours from Tokyo to Shin Osaka. One 16 car Hikari train from Tokyo continues along the Sanyo Shinkansen as far as Okayama each hour. The Kodama is the slowest train as it stopped at every stations between Tokyo and Shin Osaka.
To reach the island of Kyushu, you may need to connect with the Kyushu Shinkansen, which has three types of Shinkansen.
The Mizuho is the fastest train category, stopping at Hakata, Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo. it provides though service to the Sanyo Shinkansen starting from Shin-Osaka.
The two other one are called Sakura and Tsubame, the latter stopping at all stations.
