How To Get To The Reading Between The Lines Transparent Church in Borgloon - Belgium
Detailed description on how to get there:
Belgium Off the beaten path : Reading between the lines, a transparent church
Doorkijkkerkje : ‘Reading between the lines’ is a project by the duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh.
This ‘church’ consists of 30 tons of steel and 2000 columns, and is built on a fundament of armed concrete. The concept of the traditional church is transformed into a transparent object of art.
Depending on the perspective of the viewer, the church is either perceived as a massive building, or dissolves — partly or completely — into the landscape.
Belgium - Reading between the lines
Built in 2011.
Reading between the Lines also called the see-through church ,it is an installation from 2011 based on a design by the architect duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh .Reading between the Lines is located in the Haspengouw hills to the south of Borgloon , between the town and the Roman Kassei , and can be regarded as landscape art . The whole is made up of horizontal corten steel plates, connected by welded square plates. The whole has been retracted onto a concrete foundation in the rolling Loon landscape. The form refers to the archetype of the West European church. This church located on a footpath looks very surprising. As one gets closer, it gradually appears that it is not a church. The building is, due to the use of horizontally placed steel plates, more or less transparent, hence the name of the artwork. This transparency appears even more when one enters the church.

The Belgian architects duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh (BE) built a see-through church for Borgloon. Reading between the Lines is 10 metres high and consists of 100 stacked layers of steel plate in the shape of a church of Loon. The construction weighs a whopping 30 tons. The special way of construction makes the landscape always visible throughout the church, from far away and up-close. The church is therefore present but also absent in the landscape.

As happens more often than you might suspect I got up at 4am this morning to ... well, to nothing!
The plan was to take pictures of today's Super Moon. Not very rare, this happens 3 or 4 times a year. What makes today quite unique is that, now that the moon is at its closest point to the Earth, it’s also a full moon. Add a clear sky to this and we’re out shooting! The ideal time to photograph the moon is when it's just over the horizon. Because of the “light-refraction” caused by the atmosphere the moon appears twice as larges. Today, the “moon-set” occurred at the same time as sunrise. That makes it even more interesting for us photographers because at this point you also have the right light conditions to get a beautiful moon and a lot of details in the landscape. In my case it’s the see-trough church or Reading Between the Lines in Borgloon.
But just when the moon gets low enough, clouds came in and completely blocked my view.
Well, rarely we get back home empty handed... While waiting for the moon to lower I put on wider lens to photograph the landscape in this excess moonlight, which surely gives a special effect ...
