MILFORD SOUND CRUISE with Real Journeys - Queenstown to Milford Sound
Today, I went on an incredible journey to Milford Sound, New Zealand. Originally, I wanted to rent a car to go there for a Milford Sound Cruise, but that would have been a long drive from Queenstown and I just didn't want to do it myself.
So I asked my hotel to book me on the best bus they knew of. And I am SO glad they did!
Milford Sound really makes you feel tiny. Even the drive down from Queenstown is amazing. I told out driver along the way that it was so impressive, I'd feel like I got my money's worth even if we didn't make it to Milford Sound.
I took my trip with Real Journeys and it was about $200 NZD. The driver was fantastic! He narrated the trip the whole way down, using personal experiences to paint a picture of the history of Fiordlands National Park. He was amazing.
Can't recommend Real Journeys highly enough. I'm not one for bus tours, but this one was really worth it, in my opinion.
You can read more about that experience here
And sorry about the sound in some places. The wind was really blowing hard. And while I have a great microphone, I don't think the windscreen was attached properly. Still, it's pretty great!

MILFORD SOUND, NZ | glass top bus, scenic nature cruise, flight over the mountains!
♥ Wednesday, October 26, 2016 - On our first official day of tourist-ing, we woke up at the crack of dawn to take a really long scenic bus trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound. On the way, we saw a peak of the actual Misty Mountains from Lord of the Rings! At Milford Sound, we took a scenic nature cruise. Lastly, we flew back to Queenstown (about a 1/2 hr flight versus the 3.5 hr bus ride!). We were really fortunate to have fantastic weather for our cruise -- we hear that two out of three days, it rains! I would still highly recommend visiting Milford Sound regardless - it is stunningly beautiful!
··· A FEW MORE DETAILS ···
Our trip was from Sunday, October 23, 2016 to Sunday, November 13, 2016. So 22 days in total, with a good chunk of those days being in transit days.

Milford Sound in New Zealand is a fiordland with such beautiful scenery. Every time I visit, I’m in-love and wonder why I don’t come more often. Water everywhere – waterfalls appear after it rains, river, lakes, snow and the sea. It’s at the bottom of the South Island and a 4.5 hour drive from Queenstown.

Doubtful Sound Cruise – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 143: Today we are getting off the beaten track and taking a cruise of Doubtful Sound with Real Journeys! It’s a full day trip over the stunning Lake Manapouri and through the Fiordland National Park wilderness to get to the quieter big brother of Milford Sound.
Yesterday - Day 143➜
Tomorrow – Day 144➜
30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we are going from Te Anau to Lake Manapouri which is the start of our Doubtful Sound Tour! We are going to be cruising on the less popular fiord of the Fiordland National Park. However, it’s 3X larger than Milford Sound meaning that just the Doubtful Sound cruise is 3 hours. On top of that, it’s a whole adventure to get to Doubtful Sound, starting at the shores of Lake Manapouri.
We join the team from Real Journeys for a cruise across Lake Manapouri, a stunning lake and entrance to the Fiordland National Park. The trip is a couple of hours where already we see towering mountains and that famous Fiordland National Park scenery.
Once we are across the waters of Lake Manapouri, we hop onto a bus to take us over Wilmot Pass, New Zealand’s most expensive road to build and the only road completely disconnected by the New Zealand road network. We stop along the way for epic viewpoints of Doubtful Sound and to see some wildlife, the native kea parrot!
We arrive down at Deep Cove where our 3 hour cruise on Doubtful Sound begins. Doubtful Sound makes an awesome alternative to Milford Sound with a lot less boat traffic and chance for the captain to switch the engines off and allow us to hear the wilderness around us. Milford Sound may be called the 8th wonder of the world, but Doubtful Sound has that same impressive mountains carved by glaciers, waterfalls, dark reflective waters, and not to mention the wildlife as we see dolphins, penguins and seals on this trip. If you were only to do one New Zealand cruise, consider this one!
So what do you think of this cruise in Fiordland National Park? Would you add going to Doubtful sound to your New Zealand bucket list? LUK in the comments!
