Buddhism is the second largest religion in Malaysia, after Islam, with 19.2% of Malaysia's population being Buddhist although some estimates put that figure up to 21.6% when combined with Chinese religions. The Reclining Buddha Temple (Wat Chayamangkalaram) is also known as the Sleeping Buddha by the locals. This temple is a Thai temple and it is well known due to the gold plated reclining Buddha that is as long as 33meters.

The Reclining Buddha Temple (Wat Chayamangkalaram) is also known as the Sleeping Buddha by the locals. This temple is a Thai temple and it is well known due to the gold plated reclining Buddha that is as long as 33meters. This made it one of the largest available in the whole wide world. The temple was built in the year of 1845 on the five acres land given by Queen Victoria to the Thai's community. The reclining Buddha represents the historical Buddha at his death, with the name of Pra Buddhachaiya Mongkul which is a symbol to a complete peace and detachment from the world. When visiting Penang, Malaysia, it is a beneficial cultural and spiritual experience to tour some of the most prominent Buddhist temples on this tropical island. Dating back two centuries in architecture and representing both Theravada and Mahayana traditions; the visitor is rewarded with beauty and inspiration.

Fort Cornwallis & Sleeping Buddha Temple - Penang, Malaysia
All the sites in the video are located in Georgetown, Penang Malaysia. Fort Cornwallis is currently undergoing some renovation and excavation work. The Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower (also known as the Jubilee Clock Tower) is just outside of Fort Cornwallis. There is a betel nut sculpture next to the clock tower. Wat Chaiyamangalaram (also known as the Sleeping Buddha Temple) has a large statue of a reclining Buddha there. This was filmed in July 2019.

In front of the main building containing the Reclining Buddha are a pair of Thai style guardian statues, one with a red face and one green, as well as a pair of mythical creatures resembling giant serpents and dragons to welcome visitors and served as guardians.
Behind the reclining Buddha statue are 12 statues representing the meaning of the 12 chinese zodiac signs, and some spiritual bones. There are also plenty of urns containing the ashes of devotees.

An afternoon spent exploring the Burmese Buddhist Temple (Dhammikarma) and the Thai Buddhist Temple (Wat Chaiyamangalaram) in Penang.

You will be greeted by two statues right outside of the temple entrance. Remember to take off your shoes when you step into the temple. Behind the reclining Buddha, you can see there are many niches, containing the ashes of devotees. There is a small Thai village and a Thai cemetery just behind the temple.

Dhammikarama Burmese Temple
Dhammikarama Burmese Temple is a Burmese temple in Pulau Tikus suburb of George Town of Penang in Malaysia. Situated in Burmah Road, the temple located close to the Wat Chayamangkalaram. It is the sole and oldest Malaysian Burmese temple in the state.

Penang's Wat Chaiyamangalaram (sometimes shortened to Wat Chaiya) is the most popular of Malaysia's Thai-style Buddhist temples. It is located in Lorong Burma just outside George Town's historic heritage zone. It is directly opposite theDhammikarama Burmese Temple making it convenient for tourists to cover both temples in a single visit.
Wat Chaiyamangalaram was founded in 1845 by a Thai Buddhist monk. Over the years new buildings and attractions have been added.

Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple - Penang
The Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple is situated along Burma Lane in Pulau Tikus and was founded on 1st August 1803, the temple was known as Nandy Moloh Burmese Temple then. This place of public worship was purchased by Nonya Betong from George Layton, granted by Sir George Leith Baronet, LT. Governer of Prince of Wales Island, for 390 Spanish Dollars and donated to the temple.
Being one of the earliest and the only Burmese Temple in Malaysia and featuring the historical pagoda, the temple's well and Sima hall, the temple was designated in 1988 as one of the state's historical sites to be preserved as a tourist attraction.
The temple is always managed by a Chief Monk to facilitate and complement the practice of Buddhism, the temple has a main shrine hall, a sima hall, a dining hall, monk's quarters, preceptee's lodge, Sunday school, a library and a lecture hall. The first Chief Monk of the temple was Venerable U. Nandamala.
The Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple has been identified as one of the fifteen historical sites to be launched under the visit Penang year 1988 in the state of Penang.The temple grounds which is renowned for its green and serene environment, had participated and was awarded the 1st prize in the state landscaping and beautification programme held in 1997 and 2001.

Wow what a sight to behold. Stunning and beautiful. This temple is the Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple and it is the oldest Buddhist Temple and only Burmese Temple in the state of Penang. Built in 1803, It's over 200 years old! It was really cool, definitely go check it out if you are visiting.
Directly opposite the road is another impressive temple known as the Thai Reclining Buddha Wat Chaiyamangalaram.
It has one of the world's largest reclining Buddha statues. This temple was built in 1845. The Dhammikarama Burmese Temple is located straight across the road from the Wat Chaya Temple.
