Sioux Reconciliation Monument, Mankato, MN - May 10, 2017 - Travels With Phil Unedited
Subscribe to my YouTube Channel ----- - - - - - The Sioux Reconciliation Monument is the site of the mass hanging of 38 Dakota Sioux who participated in the war in 1862. It is located in downtown Mankato, Minnesota. This was the largest mass execution in US history. The Sioux were extremely upset by the corruption among US government employees, agents and traders. Payments and goods which were part of peace treaties failed to arrive on time. With many Sioux on the verge of starvation, some decided to take back their lands, and extract their revenge. This led to a series of attack on settlements and Army posts along the Minnesota River. The fighting lasted for six weeks. - May 10, 2017 - . Travels with Phil by Phil Konstantin -

Colebrook Reconciliation Park
Colebrook Reconciliation Park in the Adelaide suburb, Eden Hills, was established in 1998 as a memorial to those Aboriginal children who were removed from their families and housed at Colebrook Home, a United Aborigines mission which had originated in Oodnadatta in 1924. Later, the mission moved to Quorn, before it was finally relocated to Eden Hills in 1942. The home was finally closed in 1972 and demolished in 1973.
For a brief period of time during the 1990's, I was involved with the campaign to turn the site of the former mission (or home), into a permanent memorial to a generation of children who became known as the 'Stolen Generation'. By 1998, following the success of the campaign involving a local reconciliation group and the Tji Tji Tjuta (former residents) of Colebrook Home, the Colebrook Reconciliation Park was born. In consultation with former residents of the home, a local artist, Silvio Apponyi, was commissioned to create a number of statues to install on site.
The finished works are the Pool of Tears, created in 1998, and Grieving Mother installed in 1999.
It is important to acknowledge that while Colebrook did house children who had been forcibly removed from their families by government officials, not all the native children who passed through the institution were 'stolen' from their families. Some were placed there because their parents were unable to care for them. Other children had been taken from their families by non-Indigenous people to work for them and then abandoned when their services were no longer needed.
Sadly, over time, many children eventually lost most, if not all, of their language, culture and identity. When some of these children finally met their parents many years later, it was almost impossible for parent and child to bridge the language and culture gap. Tragically, some children never saw their parents again.

Dakota 38+2 Interviews and Movie
On Dec. 26, 1862, in Mankato Minnesota, 38 Dakota men where hanged following the 1982 Dakota conflict -- a part of history that very few people learned about. One day, Jim Miller had a dream abut riding horses from Crow Creek, South Dakota to Mankato Minnesota on the anniversary of the hanging to honor the 38 men hanged that day, plus two other men that were later captured and also hanged.
In 2012, a movie, titled the Dakota 38 + 2 was made telling Jim Miller's story. This short video discusses the movie to some extent, but the main focus is an interview that we had with the founder, Jim Miller, back in December 24, 2011.

Dakota 38 - state
After the end of the U.S-Dakota war of 1862, 303 Dakota men were sentenced to death. However, Abraham Lincoln refused to sign off on the execution and decided to carefully review each case. Lincoln was conflicted about whether to agree to the execution list to appease Minnesota’s call for revenge, or to fall on the side of mercy and execute only a few. In the end, he compromised, and reduced the list down to 38. They were hung on December 26th 1862, in what would be the largest mass execution in United States history. Lincoln’s decision angered Minnesota's representatives in Congress, resulting in all Dakota being exiled from the state.
