Red Canyon, Dixie National Forest , Utah, United States, North America
Red Canyon is located along Scenic Byway 12, just 9 miles from Bryce Canyon. Passing through it is required to get to Bryce Canyon National Park from the west. From the east, stay on Highway 12, past the junction of highways 12 and 63 for 9 miles, to find Red Canyon. As part of Dixie National Forest, rather than a national park or monument, there are no entry fees to drive through or hike in Red Canyon. Red Canyon, a spectacular oasis of rock nested in a vast forest known to locals as Dixie. The two-million acre, 170 mile long forest ranges from Red Canyon's arid desertscape of sandstone hoodoos to a lush high altitude forest on Cedar Mountain. When thinking of Southern Utah, many think of red sandstone. Red Canyon has this in abundance. Cooler summers and crisp winters characterize the Red Canyon recreation area. Red Canyon is set at 7400' and provides a prime area for cross country skiing, cool summer hiking, horseback riding and ATV trails. The Red Canyon Visitor Center was completed in the winter of 2004. It is located along Highway 12 and is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. Information is offered inside on hiking, ATV trails, 4WD trails, horse trails and the beautiful paved bike trail that runs through Red Canyon. There are some fun hikes in Red Canyon including the Birds Eye Trail. This is a moderate .8 mile hike that takes hikers up close to red rock formations. The 3 mile Losee Canyon Trail takes hikers past some select rock formations.Like Bryce Canyon, Red Canyon is open year-round. Southwestern Utah is the ideal place for year-round recreation. The seasonal Red Canyon Campground is shaded by ponderosa pines, junipers and Douglas firs. The 35 site campground usually closes the first day of October and opens again May first. The charge for camping is $11 per day. There are tables, grills, group sites, flush toilets, showers and a few RV pull throughs.

Drones over Mossy Cave, Panguitch Lake and Red Canyon, Utah
Published on Jul 1, 2015--I have re-published this with a new music track.
As part of a longer trip in central Utah, I drove from Capitol Reef in the east back on Scenic Byway 12 through Bryce Canyon. This video shows some spectacular examples of the rich color that is so widespread in Utah.
A favorite stop was West of Bryce Canyon on the road which leads down off Bryce's plateau. Red Canyon is both spectacular and accessible.
I was able to launch my drones several times, soar up above the trees and revel in the intricate cliffs and hoodoos splashed with intense reds.
As a complete contrast, I then drove West through Panguitch to its reservoir and park at Panguitch Lake. The DJI Inspire 1 drone had a fine day under cloudless skies.

Dad and I took a brief stop in Red Canyon Utah as we were leaving Byrce Canyon. A bit of rain had fallen so colors were particularly deep and striking. It was a delightful discovery to end our day.

Red Canyon Driving Tour
The Red Canyon on the way from Zion National Park to Bryce Canyon National park was an unexpected treat! This was a short canyon that gives you a sneak peek at what Bryce Canyon holds for you, ahead.
History and lore of the old west are alive in Red Canyon, thanks to Butch Cassidy, who was raised nearby in a cabin in Circleville where he lived from 1879 until 1884 . Rumor has it that when Cassidy was in Panguitch at a dance he got himself into a brawl over a girl. Cassidy thought he killed the fellow and fled to the craggy land where Red Canyon is today. Turns out the man he knocked out was just fine, but a posse was already sent out after Cassidy. He eluded them by hiding along what is now known as the Cassidy Trail.
