Chalky Mount Pottery Series - #4 Shaping the Clay
John Springer is Teacher and Professor very involved in education in Barbados “You can even do an Associate Degree on higher education at the community college. Of which pottery and ceramics is compulsory.”
In this session he demonstrates fine tuning the shape of the jug he is making. Its part of the trowing process - sort of step 2.
“Now we’re going to concentrate on the shape. So that once all the shape is ready – I’m now aiming on my final shape. It is now this that will determine what type of neck I will be giving to this vase. I’ve got an uneven rim here. No one wants a pot with uneven rim, so we need to correct that. It should come right here. That should take care of it.
Now I’m going to form a ridge here. All my vases and jars have this ridge, which I use as a trademark so it can be identified with that particular mark here.
There’s a little excess water here to the bottom which I don’t want there. Sometimes you leave that water there and it can create some problems when it drains. Especially when it dries too fast. So you always make sure that you take care of that water.
And you can now do the final touches on the neck there. Smoothing the edges. You now stop the wheel.”
With that he uses a bit of string, which he calls a wire cutter. He cuts along the base and lifts it up - a work of art.
Amazing. Fantastic!

Inside Hamilton's Pottery - Barbados
Inside Hamilton's Pottery is a video documentation of clay processing at the studio of Barbadian master Potter Hamilton Wiltshire.
By Ronaldo Wiltshire, Filmed by Unik View.
Last summer I travelled from London back to my birth place Barbados to spend some time at my father’s ceramic studio.
I really enjoyed working with the local so I decided to document the processing of the raw material.
The raw material was sourced from a secret location in Scotland district which is on the east coast of the island. We gathered sacks of the raw clay rubble and brought them back to the studio.
First, we emptied a bag of the raw sandy clay rock into the ball mill then added water before switching it on to turn for just over an hour.
We then opened the ball mill to a sandy paste which was then sieved before being poured into trays to dry in the hot tropical sun. The remainder of the liquid was stored in barrels to be used later.
After 4 days to drying the clay was put through the pug-mill and out came lovely columns of clay ready to be formed into beautiful ceramic pieces.
This clay can withstand a firing temperature of up to cone 5/6.

Drying the clay, backing it and glazing are the final touches of potting. Here John tells us about the various approaches:
“I would leave it to dry for one day. I then shave the bottom nice and smooth. It takes another 5 or 6 day of drying. Then we take it to a special oven which we call a Kiln. And then bake it there.
I could take it to a high enough temperature where it would take the features of terra-cotta. That’s the reddish color you see there – see the red there. Or I could have gone ahead and glazed it, which is a glassed coating.”

Carib - A Journey through cultural ceramics
The Hera Carib project studies how people lived in the Lesser Antilles. In this short video, researchers from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven talk about the life cycle of ceramics: what material they are made of, how and for what purpose they are made. Scientific analysis of ceramics from archaeological excavations helps to understand where these objects were made, which often differs from the place were they were found. This provides information on migration patterns and trade in the pre- and post-Columbian Caribbean.

Mexican Bird of Paradise Blooming | Yellow, Orange, Red Flowers
Name: Mexican bird of paradise, Caesalpinia pulcherrima, poinciana, peacock flower, red bird of paradise, dwarf poinciana, pride of Barbados, flos pavonis, and flamboyant-de-jardin
Native to: West Indies
USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 9-11
Season: Perennial Shrub
Height: 12-15 ft
Bloom Season: Spring/SummerFall
Bloom Color: Orange, Red, Yellow
Environment: Full Sun
Water Requirements: This drought tolerant shrub requires regular watering on first year in ground. Once established, it requires less watering.
Soil Type: Can grow in any kind of soil
Soil pH: 5.6 to 7.8 (acidic to mildly alkaline)
How to Grow: Seeds which are are poisonous
My Experience: Fast growing shrub. It is a pest and disease free plant. It loves summer heat and hardy in hot climate areas. Freezing temperature kills the above ground part of the plant but it comes back from the roots, in spring. It produces flowers in hottest months of the year. It requires full sun for non stop blooming. It really is spectacular in full bloom.

The entire floor of the gallery is often covered with natural materials like sea grape or mahogany leaves or red clay.
In 2003 The Jamaican National Gallery purchased one of her life sized sculptures for their permanent collection.
She and her mother are a well known team finishing illustrious properties for Jamaica's rich and famous, working consistently with Island outpost to create an indigenous tropical ambiance with unusual artistic flair.
She is also popularly known for her ceramic masks, which she hand paints and adorns with natural found materials to depict various popular Caribbean hairstyles. In doing so she seeks to represent a uniquely Afro-Caribbean aesthetic and identity.
Her African Name Nakazzi means woman of Substance and through her work she continues to strive to embody this ideal.
She considers herself primarily a sculptor but her practice of art varies widely to include charcoal drawings, paintings, batik's, murals and mosaics, and ceramics.

The Barbados Cherry makes a great bonsai tree.
This small shrub has arching dark brown stems with green leaves. Pink flowers appear periodically from April to October followed by bright red, tart-tasting, 1-inch “cherries” which are extremely high in vitamin C. The edible fruits may be made into syrup, wine, jelly, jam, or other preserves.
Tiny leaves and weeping compact habit make it an excellent plant for a hanging basket.
Barbados cherry develops into a thick, rounded canopy of fairly delicate foliage
Often used for bonsai, the creeping stems and exposed roots can create really interesting shapes.
Use a well draining soil. Keep the soil moist. Water frequently, but allow the soil to dry slightly between watering. The Barbados Cherry does not like wet feet. Wire with care as the branches are brittle. Clip and grow is the best method for training this tree. Repotting can be done anytime during the summer, when the lows are above 50°F and highs are over 90°F. More sun exposure produces smaller leaves, many flowers and best fruit; however, the tree should be protected from full sun in the hottest months. Protect the potted tree from freezing in winter. Mature trees planted in the ground can survive brief exposure to 28°F, while young plants are killed by any drop below 30º F.
Growing Cherry of the Rio Grande from Cuttings, Days 0-92
Eugenia involucrata, the Cherry of the Rio Grande, is an evergreen shrub native to Brazil which bears small fruits that are dark red to purple in color and have a sweet cherry-like flavor. It is said to be a low maintenance plant that grows well in containers. It can be grown it in full sun or partial shade, and is frost tolerant to 20 Fahrenheit or -6 Celsius. It can be watered generously, and when flowering and fruiting, but this species is fairly drought tolerant. Plants are tolerant of a variety of soils, but grow best in partly acidic soil.
I bought one for $10 from a nursery that sells a variety of exotic flora, and it came in a small thin pot with potting mix and tiny white mites crawling on the leaves. I treated the potting mix right away with some diluted imidacloprid to give my little cutting systemic resistance against parasites. Towards the very end of the first episode I bought a watering tray to catch the overflow, and started watering more generously because of it.
