McKinley Monument Flyover Nov 10th 2014
Flyover of the McKinley Monument in Canton, Ohio November 10th 2014.
The McKinley Monument, a landmark in the City of Canton, is the final resting place for the 25th President of the United States, William McKinley. Residents of Canton pass by the Monument or run up and down the 108 steps everyday. Traveling on Interstate 77, the Monument towers above the trees. But some may wonder: Why is such a magnificent building in Canton? The answer is quite simple. William McKinley was and is Canton's favorite son. While the President was born in Niles, Ohio, he called Canton home. After his death, it was fitting that the President be laid to rest in the city where his career began, the place where he found his true love and ran for the highest office in the land.
On September 16, 1901 the funeral train left Buffalo, New York for Washington, D.C. Following services at the United States Capitol, the President's body was placed back on the train for his final trip to Canton. On September 19 President McKinley's body was interred at the Werts Receiving Vault in Canton's West Lawn Cemetery.
After the services, several of the President's closest advisors, including William R. Day and Ohio Senator Marcus Hanna, met to discuss the location of a proper memorial to serve as a final resting place. The site chosen was often visited by McKinley. At one time, he even had suggested that a monument to soldiers and sailors from Stark County be placed there.
On September 26, 1901 the McKinley National Memorial Association was formed and President Theodore Roosevelt named the original Board of Trustees. The first order of business was to purchase the site, owned at the time by the West Lawn Cemetery. By October 10, the Association issued a public appeal for $600,000 in contributions for the construction project. Ohio Governor George K. Nash supported the effort by proclaiming McKinley's birthday in 1902 a special day of observance by the state's schools. Large numbers of school children contributed to the memorial fund, and the Association was able to purchase the proposed site.
Construction of the memorial began on June 6, 1905 when Mr. Magonigle removed the first shovel of soil from the site. ByNovember 16 the cornerstone was laid in an official ceremony attended by Mrs. McKinley and other family members.
The interior dome measures 50 feet in diameter and is 77 feet from the floor to the highest point. At the top of the dome is a red, white and blue skylight. The skylight has 45 stars in its design representing the 45 states in the Union at the time of President McKinley's death. The skylight was part of the original design, but for some reason was never installed. There was a clear glass skylight in its place. Using Magonigle's plans, and the Canton glass specialists White Associates, the 12-foot diameter skylight was installed during a restoration project in 1976.
By September 1907 the Monument and the 26 acres surrounding it were finished. Nine states had contributed material for the memorial. Ohio supplied the concrete, all of the brick, and much of the labor. Massachusetts provided the exterior granite and Tennessee the marble walls and pedestal and part of the marble floor. New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Illinois and Rhode Island also contributed material for the project.
After the dedication the McKinley National Memorial Association continued to administer the site. Eventually, it became difficult for the Association to maintain the structure and the grounds. In early 1941 the federal government was approached about taking over the site. With war underway in Europe, it was clear that the United States might become involved and the government did not want to take on additional financial responsibilities. In 1943, the property was transferred to the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society, today known as the Ohio Historical Society. In 1951 on the 50th anniversary of McKinley's death the memorial was rededicated by the state.
The memorial returned to local control in 1973 when the property was transferred to the Stark County Historical Society, owners and operators of the Wm. McKinley Presidential Library & Museum. On September 29, 1992, after years of restoration work and enhancement of the grounds the McKinley National Memorial was rededicated yet again. This rededication recognized the partnership undertaken by the Federal Government, local foundations and private citizens to honor the memory of President William McKinley.

Hotels In Saint George Utah Best Western Hotels In Saint George Utah
Best Western Google Review Great place to stay I only have two minor complaints. One the cleaning staff speaks no english and when you say something to them it's like talking to a corps for a second. The othe is my A/C went out in July when I was gone from my room. When I got back from a long day installing pipe,,,,, boy was it hot!!!!! They did give me another room but I had to move all of my stuff myself. This is a nice CLEAN nice and quiet place. The mention of a dated look,,,, well,, I don't stay at motels for the decore. Besides, it was clean and comfortable and the A/C for the most part was awesome. I have to go back to this project and will happily stay there again. Nothing was stolen from my room,,, but then everything of value to me is with me at all times. The flat panel tv's are great, the microwaves are adequate for snacks, and if you turn the fridges down they will turn your drinks to ice. Nice place stay here,,,,, oh and try PANDA GARDEN over on 900 east,,,, great food.
Best Western is also your perfect location to base your vacation, when visiting the local scenic attractions, and nearby Bryce Canyon, Zions, and Grand Canyon National Parks. Having each within a few hours drive and Zions a mere 45 min, see the great beauty of the nearby National Parks.

375 Days in the USA
For these 375 Days I have to thank my lovely host family, their family and friends, I learned, laughed and lived so much with them. And my own too. My parents who didn't let me give up and come back when it was hard and my friends who straight after waiting for me to return from Africa were ready to put our condo plans on hold again so that I got to have a year in the USA and supported me to live my life even when it meant such distance again. And of course the friends I made along the way, who I learned to love more than I ever thought I could. Who were there when I needed them and who I got to make so many amazing memories with.
It was an amazing year, with all it's ups and downs. Not easy at all. I made so many mistakes. But little by little, - with the help of others, some on my own - I learned. A lot of life lessons I should have learned earlier but never got the chance. I changed, I grew up to be more like the person I wanted to be. And I know I'm still growing. I've learned that I'm a human too, sometimes I forget my keys home, but no one throws me out of the house for that. I mess up, but I'm forgiven, I get new chances. I'm not perfect at all and people around me realizing that helps. To look back to that person who got terrified for every single mistake and who's face lit up red while talking, I've grown a whole lot. I'm more patient, open, trusting, social and stronger. I've stopped building walls around me and built myself instead. I've changed, still the same person – just more me than I ever was before. And for that I need to thank every person that has been a part of this year. Thank you for the time, love, support, laughter and memories, it was tots AWESOME! ;)
During these 375 days I...
- celebrated so many birthdays, went trick or treating on Halloween with my little buddy, had my first Thanksgiving, saw the parade on St. Patrick's day ,had so many goodbye picnics, surprise ones too, BBQ in a park with friends and a Hello Kitty pinata
- drank too much Starbucks, ate too much fro yo, pancakes, bagels and everything chocolaty in Max Brenner..
- hiked on Pocono mountains with my host family and friends
- made a road trip to Ocean city and Atlantic City
- spent a morning at the Jersey Shore
- had a vacation in Miami and made a Caribbean cruise with my family, visited Belize, Mexico and Honduras
- snowboarded down the mountains in Vermont and Colorado, had board game nights by the fire and cowboy dinner in a gondola restaurant
- made a crazy road trip to see the wild horses in Assateague island and waterfalls in Virginia
- build snowmen, blew bubbles, had water fights, watched Hunger games, raced around a shopping mall with stuffed animals, played with a sprinkler and shot deer with marshmallows.. ;)
- studied in Bryn Mawr college
- made a week long road trip down south and went around Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South and North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, visited Elvis in Graceland, walked in Memphis, danced all night around Bourbon street, got to hear my future from an old man in New Orleans, got stuck in the middle of nowhere because the car didn't start and ate alligator, ostrich, catfish and beignets
- worked on a tall ship with an amazing crew, had the most amazing tall ship festival
- spent a day in Lancaster with the Amish
- visited New York so many times, made a party cruise around Manhattan, drank milkshake in central park, saw 4 Broadway musicals, danced on Governor's island and walked around Chinatown listening to music under the sunset
- made the longest ever can phone and drove a tandem bike
- went riding around with friends, played soccer with the horses and just had crazy fun at the stables with all the animals and people
- visited also Washington DC often, once with 20 other nationalities in a same bus, once for Easter to find hidden Easter eggs and to play hilarious Uno games
- went super spontaneously to run the color run and had so much fun
- spent an evening in a trampoline park with friends
- celebrated 4th of July in colonial Williamsburg with my host gran parents, had BBQ, played in the pool, went shopping and learned a lot about the history
- had a extended weekend in South Hampton, swam and enjoyed the beach
- rode roller coasters in Hershey park!
- had the MOST AMAZING week in Hawaii, made a road trip around the Big Island, swam with sea turtles, hiked to one of the only four green sand beaches on earth, had a dirt fight on a black sand beach and pizza under the sunset on a white sand one, boogie boarded in the waves, jumped off a cliff on the most southern point in USA, saw active volcanoes, rain forests, lava valleys and waterfalls
- and of course had so much fun with the best family and so many friends that made this year unforgettable! ;)
Until the next time US!

Zion National Park: 10 Things to Know Before You Go
Things YOU need to know before YOU go to Zion National Park in Utah. Zion National Park is big… 229 square miles! Zion's perpendicular cliffs are nearly 3,000 feet high. Unlike other canyon parks - where many visitors view the canyons from their rims - Zion draws visitors to its floor. Elevation: Lowest 3,666 ft and a high elevation of 8,726 ft at Horse Ranch Mountain.
Admission is for a week
$35 per vehicle
$20 per pedestrian
Getting In:
Zion is located in the South west corner of Utah.
The closest major airports are:
150 Miles from Las Vegas
Or 300 Miles from Salt Lake City
Driving time that’s about 3 hours from Vegas, 4.5 hours from Salt Lake City, or 8 hours from Los Angeles
There’s a couple of other small airports closer by, Saint George is just 49 miles from the park, and Cedar City is 60 miles
In the high season Summer & WInter Holidays, you have to take a shuttle in to the park, so you have to park your car in Springdale.
If you want to drive your car in, most people recommend getting in by 10am before all the lots fill up.
Getting Around:
Springdale operates a shuttle service within the town to take you from your parking lot or hotel to the park entrance.
The NPS operates another shuttle that runs on the scenic drive in the park making 9 stops.
Visitor Information
There are 2 visitor centers, the main one in Springdale, and another, the Kolob Canyon Visitor Center is located off of Interstate 15 at the west entrance of the park
Lodging
4 options in the park
3 Campgrounds -- only the Watchman Campground is open year round
1 Hotel, the Zion Lodge -- in 2019 it’s about $220 a night
Reservations for the Lodge can be made up to 13 months in advance. Starting with the 1st of each month, the calendar opens for that whole month in the following year. The Lodge books quickly
But tons of hotels just outside the park in Springdale.
You can also stay in St. George which is about a 45 minute drive from the park.
What to bring:
Everything you need to be in a canyon for day, at least water, sunscreen. You can refill your water in the park at the Zion Lodge, Campgrounds, or Visitors Centre.
And if you’re hungry, the Zion Lodge serves breakfast and dinner… or pack a picnic from the supermarket in Springdale.
Food:
Rositas in Springdale -- pretty good Santa Fe Style Mexican food
Subway:
Yes -- Zion has a subway! But it’s not a mode of transportation - it’s a hiking trail! It’s so popular, it requires permits in advance that are gained through a lottery. And it’s hard! Think rappelling with 60 feet of rope, and swimming through cold murky water!
When to go:
The park is open year round. Most visitors come during Spring and Fall. Campgrounds March-October. There are fewer visitors December - March (with the exception of Christmas break).
What to do besides hiking:
Backpacking
Bicycling
Birding
Camping
Canyoneering
Climbing
Horse Back Riding
Ranger Led Activities
River Trips
RIde a bike
Stargazing and the Sunset
And finally
Shopping -- there’s a little gift shop at the Visitor Center
