Blue Cave, Capri, Italy. Grotta Azurra, Capri, Itália, in 1996 [Original sound]
The Blue Cave (Italian: Grotta Azzurra) is a noted sea cave on the coast of the island of Capri, Italy. Sunlight, passing through an underwater cavity and shining through the seawater, creates a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern.
The cavity is approximately 60 meters long and 25 meters wide. The roof of the entrance is situated approximately 1 meter above the level of the sea and, for this reason, passengers are obliged to lie down in the boat whilst passing in to the cave. The boatman sets down his oars and maneuvers the boat inside with the aid of a chain attached to the vault of the entrance.
The reason why the Grotta Azzurra is blue
The blue coloring of the Grotta Azzurra is created by the daylight which enters via an underwater opening located immediately below the entrance to the cave. The light is filtered by the water which absorbs the red tones, leaving only the blue ones to pass into the cave.
A second phenomenon creates the silver appearance of the objects immersed in the water: given that the index of refraction of the bubbles of air which adhere to the surface of the objects is different to that of the water, the light is allowed to egress.
The history of the Grotta Azzurra
In the Roman period, under the rule of Tiberius, the interior of the Grotta Azzurra was used as a marine nymphaeum. For many centuries, the islanders believed that the cave was inhabited by Nereidi, Sirens and devils and were far too scared to enter.
It was not until 1826 that the local fisherman Angelo Ferraro accompanied the German scholar, August Kopisch, and the painter Ernst Fries in to the cave. Their tales of the magical blue sea cave led to the Grotta Azzurra becoming Capri's number one tourist site.
How to get to the Grotta Azzurra:
- By boat: a 10 minute boat journey from Marina Grande or as part of the tour of the island.
- By bus: in Anacapri, catch the bus from the bus stop, 50 meters from Piazza Vittoria.
- On foot: from the center of Anacapri, walk along Viale T. de Tommaso, Via Pagliaro and Via Grotta Azzurra (3.5 km).

The Blue Grotto is a sea cave on the coast of the island of Capri, southern Italy. Sunlight, passing through an underwater cavity and shining through the seawater, creates a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern. The cave extends some 50 metres into the cliff at the surface, and is about 150 metres (490 ft) deep, with a sandy bottom.
The cave is 60 metres long and 25 metres wide. The cave mouth is two metres wide and roughly one metre high. For this reason, entrance into the grotto can only be achieved when tides are low and the sea is calm. Without calm seas and low tides, the grotto becomes inaccessible, as the 1-metre entrance is impossible to pass. To enter the grotto, visitors must lie flat on the bottom of a small four-person rowboat. The oarsman then uses a metal chain attached to the cave walls to guide the boat inside the grotto. Swimming in the grotto is forbidden, both for safety reasons and to preserve water clarity.
The Blue Grotto is one of several sea caves, worldwide, that is flooded with a brilliant blue or emerald light. The quality and nature of the colour in each cave is determined by the particular lighting conditions in that particular cave. In the case of the Blue Grotto, the light comes from two sources. One is a small hole in the cave wall, precisely at the waterline, that is a meter and half in diameter. This hole is barely large enough to admit a tiny rowboat, and is used as the entranceway. In photographs taken from within the cave, the above-water half of this hole appears as a spot of brilliant white light. The second source of light is a second hole, with a surface area about ten times as large as the first, which lies directly below the entranceway, separated from it by a bar of rock between one and two meters thick. Much less light, per square meter, is able to enter through the lower opening, but its large size ensures that it is, in practice, the primary source of light.
As light passes through the water into the cave, red reflections are filtered out and only blue light enters the cave. Objects placed in the water of the grotto famously appear silver. This is caused by tiny bubbles, which cover the outside of the object when they are placed underwater. The bubbles cause the light to refract differently than it does from the surrounding water and gives off the silver effect. In part because of the dazzling effect of the light from the above-water opening, it is impossible for a visitor who is in one of the rowboats to identify the shape of the larger hole, the outline of the bar that separates the two holes, or the nature of the light-source, other than a general awareness that the light is coming up from underneath, and that the water in the cave is more light-filled than the air. A visitor who places a hand in the water can see it glow eerily in this light.
During Roman times, the grotto was used as the personal swimming hole of Emperor Tiberius as well as a marine temple. Tiberius moved from the Roman capitol to the island of Capri in 27 AD. During Tiberius' reign, the grotto was decorated with several statues as well as resting areas around the edge of the cave. Three statues of the Roman sea gods Neptune and Triton were recovered from the floor of the grotto in 1964 and are now on display at a museum in Anacapri.

Capri is an island off the coast of Naples with Towering limestone cliffs
and famous Turquoise waters (with legendary blue grotto which was highlighted in the book Red Sails To Capri, by Ann Weil.
Hot resort since Roman times and in the 1950's became a top tourist destination.
AnaCapri was a favorite of French composer Claude Debussy. A quieter pace prevails where luxury hotels like the Capri Palace cater to weddings as well and spa seekers. The swimming pool has underwater glass viewing windows. The village has a pedestrian walkways which meanders between eye popping buildings and restaurants bursting with blooms like bougainvillea on steroids. There is of course pizza by the rectangle (no slices) and enormous lemons which where the pulp is used in a refreshing lemon and olive oil salad.
In the town of Capri, things get a lot busier. Fiats specially outfitted with open tops brings passengers up from Marina Grande where ferries arrive throughout the day from Sorrento and Naples.
But the biggest crowd bringer are the cruise ships which tender in thousands of passengers turning Capri into one long line like at Disneyland on the 4th of July. Troops of tourists follow paddle swinging guides through the narrow streets of Capri often causing traffic jams where the most robust tourists survive. Capri has some of the most exclusive jewelry, clothing and home assessory shops anywhere but an owner confided to me that during the time when the ships unload their passengers on the island they could close their doors and not have missed a sale. This is, for the most part, a tee shirt and gelato customer.
So how do you see Capri while avoiding the daily rush? Since the crowds usually arrive by 10:30 AM and depart by 4 PM the best strategy is to shop early or late take the funicular down when the crowds are going up the hill and go up when the crowds are coming down in the afternoon.Have lunch a little off the beaten trail.
Aurora, one of Capri's oldest restaurants. Delicious salad like one with fresh cherry tomatoes, argula and slices of Parmesan make for a great starter. The pizzas are prepared in a special oven and the super thing crusted pizza a l'aqua is made with mozzarella cheese and pepperocini spice. Its not on the menu but they'll make it for you if you ask ... and ask you should. Also try the homemade fresh sorbets.
In the evening a classic place to dine is the Quissiana Hotel and the Rendezvous Bar. Besides sushi ... they have wonderful, classic Italian dishes with a twist such as the fresh local crab, tagoltelli with summer truffles and lemon, or ravioli filled with ricotta and a spicy tomato sauce.
