Kelimutu Lake Indonesian Travel
Kelimutu in Flores, NTT, has 3 lakes that can change color. Regardless of the terms of science, there are some stories and myths are believed to local communities.
Many a traveler says, Lake Flores is one of the natural wonders of the evidence. Imagine, there are three lakes that can change color. Start of blue, green, red, white, to black.
Myths and beliefs of local residents was instrumental in it. While visiting Lake Flores some time ago, detikTravel talking with Herimanto, staff of the Department of Culture and Tourism Ende. He talked about the story and unique myths surrounding Lake Flores. Here are 5 of them:
The lake is inhabited by spirits
Three lakes are each named Tiwu Ata Mbupu, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, and Tiwu Ata Polo. Local people believe, the first lake inhabited by spirits or souls of parents who have died. The second lake is believed to be a 'home' for the young soul. While the third lake, supposedly inhabited by spirits of evil.
The second lake is most often discolored. It is said that because young people occupied, may his soul still thrills, said Ngadiman.
Changes color mysteriously
The third lake can change color mysteriously. In terms of science, there is one type of minerals in the lake that changes according to the geological conditions. But no one knows exactly when the lakes were discolored. There was no one who ever saw.
Never one time, staff of the Park saw a lake half changed color during the day. But suddenly the fog appeared, covering the lake. When the fog disappeared, the color of the lake back to normal. It does not change, said Ngadiman.
Discovered by the Dutch, red-white-blue
Kelimutu was discovered by the Dutch named Van Such Telen, precisely in 1915. At that time he told local residents, find lake red-white-blue. But people could not believe it, because it is the color of the flag of the Netherlands.
But apparently true. The first time people see, Kelimutu red, white, and blue, added Ngadiman.
Spirit was fed
The existence of the inhabitants of Lake Flores spirit not just so trust. One time in a year, the local community 'feed' the spirit through the ceremony at the third lake Starch Mata Ka Du'a Stone Ata.
It is a ceremony of offerings to the spirits of the inhabitants of Lake Flores. The offerings in the form of betel, areca nut, tobacco, rice and meat, topped off by wine / wine.
The ceremony also included a great meal for everyone, and dancing Gawi (traditional dance-ed) together, said bejo.
That said, the water is clear
Apart from the colors that appear on Lake Flores, no scientist ever really examined the original color of the lake?
Yes, there was that taking water from the lake. But the color is clear, said Herimanto, laughing. Believe not believe it, but nature here is very closely related to trust, he added.
Kelimutu is a crater lake located on the top of Mount Kelimutu volcano located on the island of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. The exact location of this mountain village Pemo, District Flores, Ende.
Kelimutu
lake-kelimutu-indonesiaseoulorgDanau known as the Lake Three Colors because it has three different colors, namely red, blue, and white. However, the colors are always changing with the passage of time.
The lake is located at an altitude of 1,631 meters above sea level.
Acid Lakes! Magic Volcano Kelimutu and three crater lakes of varying colors / HD1080 (2013)
Volcano Kelimutu and three striking summit crater lakes of varying colors / HD1080
Kelimutu ([kəliˈmutu]) is a volcano, close to the small town of Moni about 50 km to the east of Ende, Indonesia in central Flores Island of Indonesia.
The volcano contains three striking summit crater lakes of varying colors. Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People) is usually blue and is the westernmost of the three lakes. The other two lakes, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake) are separated by a shared crater wall and are typically green or red respectively. The lake colors vary on a periodic basis. Subaqueous fumaroles are the probable cause of active upwelling that occurs at the two eastern lakes.
The lakes have been a source of minor phreatic eruptions in historical time. The summit of the compound 1639-m-high Kelimutu volcano is elongated two km in a WNW-ESE direction; the older cones of Kelido and Kelibara are located respectively three km to the north and two km to the south. The scenic lakes are a popular tourist destination.
Kelimutu is also of interest to geologists because the three lakes have different colors yet are at the crest of the same volcano. According to the local officer at Kelimutu National Park, the colour changes as a result of chemical reactions resulting from the minerals contained in the lake perhaps triggered by volcano gas activity. Kawah Putih lake in West Java, south of Bandung, is another crater lake in Indonesia with some similarities to the lakes at Kelimutu.
In the early days of developing the local national park in the Kelimutu area, there were some disputes with local communities over the use of the resources. More recently, forest rangers have worked to develop better relations with nearby village communities and overall management has improved.
Kelimutu is one of the mountains listed as a ribu in Indonesia which are mountains in Indonesia which are more than 1,000 meters high.
The area is said to have begun to attract attention after being noticed by a regional Dutch military commander, B. van Suchtelen in 1915 and became more well-known after Y. Bouman wrote about the site in 1929.
The closest airports are Maumere, and Ende. There are regular flights to Maumere from Bali. The drive from Maumere to Moni, the town at the base of Kelimutu where accommodation is available, takes about 3 hours.
Flores Island, Indonesia, Mt. Kelimutu 2016
The volcano exploded and left the earth with 3 crater lakes. The tri color lakes which are vastly different, typically black, green, and blue, sometimes red, white, and blue, are a natural phenomenon that scientists have not been able to answer definitively.
Besides the volcano, we also went to Nanga Penda, the beach covered in aquamarine stone. Again, it seems that there is not information about why these stones wash ashore but their vibrant color is highly prized amongst the village and harvested for selling. No one seems to know why is it aquamarine.
As a hot springs connoisseur , I also pride myself in the various types of waters I have been in. The waters emerge from two waterfalls that have unbearably hot water, and a mildly cold water that then flow down and mix in large swimming areas...amazingly pure and soft on the body.
Our 5 day and 900kilometer round trip journey took us through magical lands that top my experience on all 4 continents I have ever visited. If magic exists, it starts here.
I am happy to share any information if you are curious to travel in SE Asia at all or specifically on the Labuan Bajo Mt. Kelimutu path.
check out the blog for more details on the journey.

At the summit of the volcano there are three crater lakes of varying colors. Although they share the crest of the same volcano and are practically side-by-side, the lakes periodically change colors from red and brown to turquoise and green, independent of each other. The peculiar colors and thick mist surrounding the volcano have earned Kelimutu a supernatural reputation. Local villages believe that the spirits of the dead go to rest in one of the lakes based upon the deeds performed on Earth. Consequently, the lakes are named Tiwi Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People), Tiwu Nua Muri Kooh Tai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Lake of Evil Sprits, or Enchanted Lake).

The Dingiso (din-jih-so)
Cigau (chee-gowh)
The Murray Monster
This cryptid is named for Lake Murray, in Papua (pap-You-uh) New Guinea … but it has also been linked to the western Indonesian section of the island as well. It was first spotted by village locals … and is described as being an amphibious, bipedal creature … with short forelimbs, and legs as huge as palm tree trunks. Additional accounts say it’s around 6 feet wide and ‘as long as a dump truck’, with a long neck and slender tail. Now, see if the following sounds familiar -- the Murray monster has teeth as long as a human finger, rough skin like a crocodile, and what is described as a series of triangular scoops running along its back. If all that makes you think of a T-Rex, join the club. Some cryptozoologists have speculated it just might be a specimen that somehow managed to avoid extinction. After the creature was reported attacking dogs in the vicinity, police and villagers formed a search party but found nothing. In 2000, reports from Western New Guinea indicated that natives associated images of dinosaurs with the lake monster. The last reported sighting we found regarding the Murray Monster occurred in 2013.
Orang-bati (o-rang bah-tee) and Ahool (ah-hool)
Orang-bati are flying creatures that are often referred to as orangutans with wings … due to their resemblance to bats and apes. Sightings date back to the 15th century when they were seen by missionaries there. According to Indonesian folklore, they’re located on the island of Seram (sair-um), where they’re said to abduct children from villages at night. Locals describe them as having blood red skin, leathery wings, and standing around 5 feet tall, with a long tail. These cryptids are similar to another creature known as the Ahool. Those are described as flying primates, that are found in Java and Vietnam. Not unlike the Ahool, the Orang-bati seem to resemble Pterosaurs (terra-sores) … and could possibly represent a lost specimen of such. Cryptozoologists have also speculated either critter could have some relation to a large flying fox … which are the largest bats in the world.
Ebu Gogo (EH-boo gogo)
These are smaller humanoid creatures found in the mythology of Flores, Indonesia. ‘Ebu’ means ‘grandmother’ … and ‘Gogo’ means ‘he who eats anything’. Although we’re told that a rough translation might be ‘Granny Glutton’. Standing almost 5 feet tall, they’re said to have broad faces with flat noses and wide mouths. They would murmur in a sound assumed to be their language … and reports suggest they could repeat back what was spoken to them, albeit in a parrot-like fashion. Locals believed the creatures were alive when Portuguese trading ships arrived in the 17th century. While sightings occurred through the 20th century, Ebu Gogo seem to have vanished. But in just a bit, we’ll talk about how these cryptids might have a relation to some hobbit like remains found on the island of Flores … and might even tie in with another mysterious group of humanoids.
Little People
A strange, half-naked humanoid was spotted by some bikers running along a dirt road in the northern part of Sumatra. Witnesses referred to him as a tribesman … which prompted locals to wonder if the figure might belong to a group of natives known as the Mante (MAHN-tay). They’re considered to be a mythical tribe of forest dwellers, thought to have the stature of pygmies … and are known to flee whenever they see intruders from the outside world. We could only find one recorded contact with the Mante, and that dates to the 17th century … That’s when two tribesmen were allegedly captured and received by a sultan. But while many consider the Mante tribe to be a legend, maybe there’s another possibility. The figure spotted recently might have had some relation an ancient race of hobbit- like humans on the island of Flores in Indonesia. Remains dated at around 50,000 years old were found there … and indicated these creatures stood around 3.5 feet tall. Could there be a connection between those creatures … the Ebu Gogo (EH-boo go-go) and the Mante tribe?
Kelimutu Flores, the Magnificent Three Coloured Lake
Mt Kelimutu National Park is the smallest among six national parks in the stretch between Bali and the Nusa Tenggara islands. Its size obviously does not matter much when it offers one of the most spectacular wonders that nature has to offer. There are three lakes on the mountain sharing the same name, Kelimutu, meaning ‘the boiling lake’. Each has its own colors and a local name. But all are believed to be the resting place of departed souls.
Kelimutu lakes are unpredictable as to when and what color they will change into. Sometimes, the colors are blue, green, and black, and some other times they turn to white, red, and blue. The last time a traveler saw them, one was dark brown, just like a pond of chocolate. Previously, the east lake was red and the middle lake was blue.

8 Most Beautiful Craters in The World
8 Most Beautiful Craters in The World
Crater Lake Mount Mazama, Oregon USA
One of the most well-known crater lakes is located in Oregon, it is actually the deepest lake in the US with a depth of 1,949 feet! Rain and snow are completely responsible for filling up this lake, making it a clear source of fresh water.
Crater Lake Albertine Rift, Africa
Volcanic explosions are responsible for creating a number of crater lakes in the area. Surrounding these protected crater lakes are some of the tallest mountains found in Africa.
Crater Lake Mount Pinatubo–Luzon, Philippines
Back in 1991 the Pinabuto volcano last erupted, marking the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. Dormant for over 400 years, Pinabuto was largely unknown until the day of its ’91 explosion. Although, a much larger eruption 35,000 years ago is believed responsible for the crater lake.
Quilotoa Crater Lake, Ecuador
800 years ago an epic VEI-6 explosion caused the formation of this crater lake. The crater lake is now 820 feet deep and gives off a greenish hue in light of the dissolved minerals present in the water. Hot springs occur on the eastern edge of the volcano, and fumaroles are present on the floor of the lake.
Kelimutu Crater Lake, Flores Island, Indonesia
Flores Island includes 3 different crater lakes, one is a striking teal blue, while the other two fluctuate between red and green. Since all 3 crater lakes come from the same volcano, scientists are currently trying to understand why they are all different colors.
Heaven Lake, Baekdu Mountain– China, North Korea
On the border of China and North Korea rests this gorgeous crater lake which hides the opening to the Baekdu Mountain volcano. In 969 CE the lake was first created due to a volcanic explosion, it is now on average around 699 feet deep. If you visit from October to mid-June the lake turns to ice.
Crater Lake, Licancabur– Chile
The symmetrical nature of this stratovolcano causes a great deal of fascination. On the border of Chile and Bolivia, parts of the volcano belong to either region, although the actual crater lake rests entirely in Chile. A whooping 3,281 feet deep, the Licancabur Lake is covered with a sheet of ice most parts of the year.
Main Crater Lake at Vulcan Point, Taal Volcano–Luzon Philippines
Known as one of the most picturesque sights in the Philippines, this crater lake is located 31 miles from Manila. At the center of the crater one large rock peaks up from the surface, this was once the floor of the crater but has now been pushed up to the surface of the water. The Main Crater Lake at Vulcan Point is 1.2 miles wide and includes the largest island at the center of a lake.

Our vacation in Flores, October 15-17th 2015.
DANAU KELIMUTU (KELIMUTU LAKES) - a gem in East Indonesia
Here's the short video from our trip to Kelimutu Lakes. The place is amazing. Sunrise with passing clouds (or fog) was spectacular.
You'll get here by catching a plane from Bali to Ende, followed by a 50kms overland to get to Moni, the village near to Kelimutu National Park. Accommodation should not be an issue. Most of them are guest houses.
The people of Flores we came across from our trip were so humble and friendly.
So if you already know Bali, let's get to know East Nusa Tenggara Indonesia :)
Kelimutu Crater Lakes Ecolodge - Ecolodges Indonesia 2013
Kelimutu Crater Lakes Ecolodge is powered by solar energy and is set in valley beside a burbling river with excellent views of Kelimutu, near the village of Moni in Eastern Flores.
This unique lodge built by Meryl Wilson and Putu Febri, provides an ideal haven of peace for the trans Flores traveller.
The climate is cool and fresh and a dawn experience at the Kelimutu lakes is a must.
The lakes lie at 1,400 m. above sea level in the volcanic craters of Kelimutu.
The lakes change colour suddenly.
A few years ago they were white, turquoise and red. In November 2009 they were black, turquoise and coca-cola coloured.
In July 2010 the smallest , Tiwu Ata Mbupu, was clear bottle green, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, the largest, was turquoise from the copper below, Tiwu Ata Polo was moss green.
This is a special area, accessed by flying into the Ngurah Rai Airport, is sacred to the Lio people.
It abounds in legends as the home of the spirits of people with special powers.
The spirits of ordinary mortals entered between the two enormous rocks, Konde (queen) and Ratu (king) found at the side of the road to the National Park, known as the gate of the spirits, Konderatu.
The village of Moni with its traditional Chief's House, is only a 15 minute walk away and the lodge is a great base for bird watching and hiking, and visiting local weavers.
