NEW YEAR AT THE RED LION FINCHINGFIELD
A History of Winchcombe | Exploring the Cotswolds
Winchcombe is a Cotswold town in the local authority district of Tewkesbury, in Gloucestershire, England. Winchcombe’s story begins back in the Neolithic period when people settled in our hills leaving a stone-lined, burial chamber – the Belas Knap long barrow.
In Saxon times Winchcombe was a royal centre favoured by the kings of Mercia, then in the Middle Ages it became a pilgrimage centre and thriving wool town. The Victorian era saw its expansion with a Town Hall, churches, a grammar school and more housing.

Appledore, Kent, Bellringing. Treble Bob Major in the Kent variation. 24/5/16. (Red Lion, Snargate).
Part of a Quarter Peal of Treble Bob Major in the Kent variation, rung on the 1900 John Warner (Crescent Foundry, Cripplegate) light octave at SS. Peter & Paul, Appledore, Kent. This attempt was specially arranged by the conductor and rung in celebration of the life and work of Doris Jemison (2/4/29 - 24/4/16), landlady of the Red Lion, Snargate (Appledore are the nearest ringable bells to the pub itself), since 1950 approx (taking complete charge of the premises upon the demise of husband Alf in 1986). The ringing here commenced at 5:20pm on the afternoon of her funeral, which took place that morning at St Dunstan, Snargate, 11am, drawing a congregation of over 200 souls; largely composed of family and close friends.
Frank Wenham (tower captain of Appledore & Stone in Oxney) rang the treble (smallest bell) in this quarter peal.
Quarter peals were also attempted at nearby St Nicholas, New Romney (3:45pm) and All Saints, Lydd (6:50pm), though the New Romney attempt was unsuccessful.

In Search of Anthony Burgess: Adderbury (3/5)
Adderbury, in Oxfordshire, central England, where Burgess and his first wife Lynne lived between 1950 and 1954. He was an assistant master at nearby Banbury Grammar School (now defunct).
This video includes footage of the exterior of Adderbury's haunted pub, of which Burgess writes in 'Little Wilson and Big God, Being the First Part of the Confessions of Anthony Burgess':
'The ghosts who flitted on the upstairs residential corridor of the Red Lion were benevolent, even the male ectoplasm in striped pyjamas who left the toilet as I went in. No spirits screamed; many nodded at me, as at one who would eventually join them in eternal Oxfordshire.'

Extracts from The Eve of St Venus:
'So she was Greek, was she?' said Sir Benjamin. 'Well, well. I suppose the new vice laws are driving some of them out of Soho. Driving them down here,' he said, as though a whole new world were opening up. 'Well.'
'She is a goddess,' said Ambrose, drunkenly and stoutly. '...And she wants me. She's the pursuer...She's the epitome of woman, not,' he said, 'not a second-hand bundle of coy erogeneity draped,' he said, 'in an all-too-diaphanous robe,' he said, 'of pudeur.'
'...today's...newspapers...full of...diminishing exports, the unkillable widening grin of the pullulating East, the expanding machine of the almighty infallible State....He himself could only turn to the past, but he heard that it was already possible to change the past, bringing the past perpetually up to date, a perpetual jackal fawning on the present, a malleable witness with no qualms about perjury. He knew that the armies were on the march, the Tannoys blaring, the collective mind -- tool of oligarchy -- being fashioned under the anaesthetic of the catchphrase and the mass entertainment...'

The cottage owned and occupied by Burgess and his wife at Adderbury is No.4, Water Lane.

26 Little Britain by Washington Irving, unabridged audiobook
Genre(s): Horror & Supernatural Fiction, Travel Fiction, General Fiction, Romance, Short Stories
The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.
Washington IRVING (1783 - 1859)
The Sketch Book was first published in seven numbers/installments in the United States before being published in two volumes in London (1819-1820). The generally enthusiastic reception of Irving's sketches in England was unusual, since at the time British opinion of American literature was pretty low. Irving's sketches were formally innovative and successful--he is credited by literary historians as being the first American author to make a living as a professional author. In particular, as Irving explicitly makes reference to in a short essay concluding the second volume of the London edition, his intent was to create pieces that didn't necessarily hang together as a whole, but which were heterogeneous in nature. Irving's logic was that his miscellany was written for different humours and that his end was that it should contain something to suit each reader.
Apart from Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - the pieces which made both Irving and The Sketch Book famous - other tales include Roscoe, The Broken Heart, The Art of Book-making, A Royal Poet, The Spectre Bridegroom, Westminster Abbey, Little Britain, and John Bull. His stories were highly influenced by German folktales, with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow being inspired by a folktale recorded by Karl Musäus. Stories range from the maudlin (such as The Wife and The Widow and Her Son) to the picaresque (Little Britain) and the comical (The Mutability of Literature), but the common thread running through The Sketch Book - and a key part of its attraction to readers - is the personality of Irving's pseudonymous narrator, Geoffrey Crayon. Erudite, charming, and never one to make himself more interesting than his tales, Crayon holds The Sketch Book together through the sheer power of his personality - and Irving would, for the rest of his life, seamlessly enmesh Crayon's persona with his own public reputation.
