Métlaoui is important railway station of southern Tunisia. City lies nearby Sousse-Tozeur line. The branch to Redeyef (with interconnection to Kasserine) splits nearby. This line is famous because is runs through scenic selja gorges.
The history of Métalaoui dates back to Prehistory. Thus, to the west of the city, in the agricultural zone of Sagdoud, there are prehistoric traces with the presence of innumerable megaliths: Bir El Hmara and Bir El Hmairia as well as Gourbata are also marked by traces of Capsian peoples.
Punic vestiges exist in the form of forts constructed for safety reasons on the tops of the mountains. Inside the gorge of Selja there are Roman ruins, notably at El Mkhifia, as well as defensive walls. Indeed, the Roman limes passes from Chebika to the south of Métlaoui.

LEAD IN :
Visitors to Tunisia are riding of one of the most exotic tourist trains in the world, the Red Lizard.
Running every day the former royal train allows its passengers to discover the inaccessible mountains of Southern Tunisia .
STORYLINE :
The Red Lizard was built in 1904 during the Belle Epoque and used to belong to the Bey of Tunisia (the title of the Head of state of Tunisia when the country was a French protectorate).
The train was given by the French to the Bey who, some say, used it for his harem.
For the past 25 years the train has been making journeys to the southern village of Metlaoui, and continues running once a day for tourists.
The only way to visit the gorges of Selja is by taking a ride aboard the Red Lizard.
The train follows an old mining track that used to transport phosphate excavated from underground mines in Metlaoui and Moulares.
The 40 minute train journey passes high cliffs and spectacular landscapes and travels through narrow tunnels dug into the gorges.
Mohamed Saleh is the train controller.
He has been working for the Red Lizard for the past 11 years and says that the train represents the image of Tunisia.
Saleh is proud to drive such an historical train and does his best to make sure the tourists have an exceptional trip.
The interior of the train is luxurious - the wooden carriages are furnished with brocaded armchairs, antique-globed lighting, brass fittings and mahogany panels.
Marc Chaumet is a French tourist visiting Tunisia.
He says taking the train was a great opportunity to see Tunisia and how Tunisians live.
