ALONE | Into The Real CANADIAN WILDERNESS, Off Grid Cabin
FINALLY!!! After 2500 KM of driving, 3 days of packing, re-checking gear and shopping for 3 weeks of food, the moment has finally arrived. Woodland Caribou Park here I come!
Join me and my Siberian Husky pup Kito as we fly high above the Boreal Forest and embark on a multi week adventure deep in the heart of this amazing wilderness. Likely the only human within the 1.2 million acres of this park, it’s a sobering moment as we load the Turbo Otter Ski Plane and taxi down the runway.
This adventure begins in the town of Red Lake, taking off from the airport. The flight northwest takes us over pure stands of Jack Pine and Black Spruce, spotting Caribou, Moose and Wolf tracks from the air. The flight lasts only 15 minutes, putting us 35 air miles west of town and within the eastern boundary of the park. The destination, the Eco Lodge I built 3 years ago!
When we built this Lodge, the intent was to have guests throughout the harsh winters up here. The cabin was well insulated, including the floors and we installed an oversized solar system to ensure electrical power throughout the low light months. With WIFI courtesy of a satellite system, LED lights and a rocking hot wood stove, all the amenities and comforts of home can be found here!….except running water of course.
Once we touched down on Olive Lake, the gear was tossed onto the lake ice, the dog found freedom and the pilot was off. Ahhh, the true silence of the north!
It’s hard to explain the feeling that comes over you when you realize you are truly alone. Once the plane banked to the west and was out of view, everything came full circle. Too few people experience “REAL” wilderness alone, and yet, that’s exactly why I traveled this far.
Sitting at almost 51 degrees latitude, and straddling the border between Ontario and Manitoba, my location within Woodland Caribou Provincial Park was truly remote. No roads, not even a winter trail could get you to where we built this Lodge. Access in the winter is by ski plane only, or perhaps a helicopter. Isolation was a key factor and as the minutes passed, my smile grew as I knew I was truly alone, albeit I did have Kito with me.
The next few weeks were meant to explore by snowshoe and backcountry ski, to follow Wolf tracks, to snowshoe through the old growth Spruce Forests and to see this land from a different perspective. With temperatures at -31 upon my arrival and dipping to -38 my first night, this was to be a true test, and one I surely welcomed.
The first order of business was to get the wood stove going, slowly warming the cabin as I worked the gear up from the lake, a task that ended several hours later. Now, with the cabin warm, I grabbed the snowshoes for a quick jaunt down the trail and out to the lake with my pup. Oh how it felt to have the evening sun on my face again! Welcome to my happy place everyone!
Over the next few weeks I’ll be exploring the area and showing what it’s like up here in this remote Canadian Wilderness. I’ll also be documenting the never ending daily chores that come with surviving through the winter months up here alone……this is all about work, but oh how I love it.
Enjoy the ride and welcome to the Eco Lodge in the depths of winter!
