STORYLINE:
Hundreds of released Taliban prisoners gathered in Kabul on Thursday to board government-sponsored buses to return to their homes in Kandahar.
The Taliban inmates, among the hundreds released by Afghan Deputy Defence Minister General Abdul Rashid Dostum on Wednesday from a prison in the town of Shibergan reached Kabul.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), said Dostum, who controls the prison in Shibergan (120 kilometres or 75 miles west of the main northern city, Mazar-e-Sharif), released 614 prisoners on Wednesday. Dostum's deputy Said Nasrullah put the number at 560.
All of the prisoners were Taliban fighters from southern Afghanistan arrested as the northern alliance, backed by US-led airstrikes, drove the Taliban from power in northern Afghanistan in November. All the released prisoners arriving in Kabul said they were forced to fight for the Taliban, and were happy to see what appeared to be a more secure Afghanistan.
The ICRC gave each inmate 500,000 Afghanis (about 14 US dollars) to pay their way home, but prisoners trickling into Kabul on Thursday said the money was enough only to reach the Afghan capital. Some said they had to buy their way out.
Shibergan is considered by some aid agencies to be Afghanistan's most horrific prison. The ICRC began emergency feedings of all prisoners there last month - putting many prisoners on liquid diets to recover from severe malnutrition. The prison was packed to about three times capacity. A spokesman for Dostum, said on Thursday that after the releases, 2,300 prisoners remain in Shibergan, including 800 foreigners, almost all of them Pakistani.
The released prisoners said they were packed into cells too small to lie down - 50 or 60 people in each cell designed for five, and that two men died of malnutrition in the past few days. Not, all the prisoners, however, complained about the conditions. Speaking to APTN, Abdul Razaque, said that the conditions inside the prison were generally good and that the prisoners were generally well treated.
The men said that they were released after a top delegation from the southern city of Kandahar travelled to Shibergan to negotiate with Dostum's representatives. They said the delegation included Mohammed Shah, the brother of Kandahar Governor Gul Agha.
Dostum, who is also interim Prime Minister Hamid Karzai's special representative to the north, gained a reputation as a ferocious fighter during decades of warfare, has been seeking to depict himself as a man of peace.

At least 34 people were killed and 17 injured after a roadside bomb hit a bus travelling between Herat and Kandahar in western Afghanistan on Wednesday. Footage shows survivors of the blast being taken to Herat provincial hospital.
We were on our way to Kabul from Herat province. Our vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb. As a result, a lot of my friends were killed and wounded too, said Zamin Ahmadi, one of survivors.
A local police spokesman said the bomb is likely to have been planted by the Taliban to target Afghan security forces. There has been a rise in numbers of such attacks in recent months. No-one has claimed responsibility for Wednesday's explosion so far.

32 killed, dozens injured in Kabul mosque attack by Pakistan Punjabi ISI-S
By Mirwais Harooni | KABUL
A suicide bomber killed more than 30 people and wounded dozens on Monday in an explosion at a crowded Shi'ite mosque in the Afghan capital Kabul, officials said, the third major attack on minority Shi'ites in the city since July.
The attacker entered the Baqir-ul-Olum mosque shortly after midday as worshippers gathered for Arbaeen, a Shi'ite ritual marking the end of a 40-day mourning period for the 7th century death of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammad.
Fraidoon Obaidi, chief of the Kabul police Criminal Investigation Department, said at least 27 people were killed and 35 wounded.
The United Nations said at least 32 had been killed and more than 50 wounded, including many children. It described the attack as an atrocity.
I saw people screaming and covered in blood, one survivor told Afghanistan's Ariana Television, adding that around 40 dead and 80 wounded had been taken from the building before rescue services arrived at the scene.
Another witness said he had helped carry 30-35 bodies from the mosque.
Bloody sectarian rivalry between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims has been relatively rare in Afghanistan, a majority Sunni country, but the attack underlines the deadly new dimension that growing ethnic tension could bring to its decades-long conflict.
Already there had been two major recent attacks on Shi'ite targets in Kabul, both claimed by Islamic State.
One was on a demonstration by the mainly Shi'ite Hazara community in July which killed more than 80 people, in the deadliest attack on civilians since 2001.
Last month, 18 people were killed when a gunman in police uniform opened fire on worshippers gathered at a shrine in Kabul for Ashura, one of the holiest occasions in the Shi'ite calendar.
In addition, at least 14 people were killed in an attack on a Shi'ite mosque in northern Balkh province, for which no group has so far claimed responsibility.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Monday's attack, but the Taliban, seeking to reimpose strict Islamic law after they were toppled from power in 2001, denied any involvement.
We have never attacked mosques as it's not our agenda, said the movement's main spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.
Officials said the attack was a deliberate attempt to stoke sectarian tensions.

Afghan official says Taliban 'resorting to' suicide attacks
Sediq Sediqqi, Afghan ministry of interior spokesman, has said though Afghan National Security Forces have made strides in the nation, suicide attacks are still a challenge.

Top female police officer gunned down in Afghanistan
Originally published on September 16, 2013
The top female police officer in Afghanistan's Helmand province was shot and injured by unknown gunmen on Sunday (September 15), just months after her predecessor was killed in early July.
It was reported that the officer was shot when walking near the police headquarters in Lashkar Gah by two gunmen on a motorbike. She was shot in the neck. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
However according to Reuters, lieutenant Negara, who like many Afghans only uses one name, was shot as she was being driven to work on a motorbike by a male relative in Lashkar Gah, capital of battleground southern province of Helmand.
She was taken to hospital and was expected to survive, said the provincial governor's spokesman, Omar Zwak.
Negara's high-profile predecessor, Lieutenant Islam Bibi, was shot dead in almost identical circumstances in early July.
Bibi was also being driven to work on a motorbike by a male relative when unidentified gunmen shot her dead.
The Taliban have often targeted senior female officials working for the U.S.-backed government, although some attacks have been linked to conservative male relatives, outraged that the women are going out to work.
Violence against women has increased sharply over the last two years, according to Afghanistan's independent human rights commission.
Activists also say there is waning interest in women's rights on the part of President Hamid Karzai's government, which they say would be content to let hard-fought-for women's rights disappear in return for a peace deal with the Taliban as foreign troops prepare to leave by the end of next year.

STORYLINE:
In May the US Marines of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit were conducting operations in the Garmser area of Helmand province - the farthest south U.S. forces have been in years. Taliban fighters have been attacking U.S. positions daily with rockets, mortars and gunfire, and Marines have responded with gunfire, mortars and artillery - and attack helicopters. An AP journalist embedded with some troops recently filmed the marines firing at positions where where Taliban militants were believed to be.
On April 27th one person was killed and nine wounded when suspected Taliban militants attacked a ceremony attended by the Afghan president in Kabul. The attackers unleashed automatic weapons and rocket fire that sent foreign dignitaries and senior members of the government fleeing for cover. President Hamid Karzai, Cabinet ministers and ambassadors escaped unharmed from the assault on the pageant marking the 16th anniversary of the end Soviet-backed rule in Afghanistan. Two lawmakers seated about 30 metres (yards) from Karzai were among those hurt. It was unclear where the firing was coming from. A military hospital official said a local Shiite Muslim leader, Nasir Ahmad Latifi, was killed by a gunshot to his heart. Hundreds of mourners attended Latifi's funeral at a mosque in the capital later that day.
