Loyal Sons Of Benagh @ Dochy Farm New British Cemetery 26/05/19
Loyal Sons Of Benagh Flute band from Newry in Co. Down, Northern Ireland visiting the grave of Sgt. Jimmy Speirs MM (Service No. S/18170) at Dochy Farm New British Cemetery on Sunday 26/05/19 as part of their Battlefield Pilgrimage held back in May 2019.
James Hamilton Speirs (22nd March 1886 - 20th August 1917) was a Scottish footballer who represented his country once in 1908, scored the winning goal in the FA Cup Final in 1911 and received the Military Medal during WW1.
He was born on 22nd march 1886 in the Govan area of Glasgow, the 5th of 6 children of James Hamilton Speirs & Janet Shields Speirs.
He started his football career playing youth football for Annandale before moving to local junior team Maryhill where he played for less than a season, before moving to Glasgow Rangers in 1905. After 3 years he moved to Clyde but after 1 season he moved south of the border and joined Bradford City. His greatest success came in his 2nd season with Bradford when he was the club's captain and goalscorer in the FA Cup Final victory in 1911. After another 2 seasons with Bradford he joined Leeds City but after 2 seasons the First World War broke out. League football continued for 1 more season at the end of which Jimmy Speirs returned to his native Glasgow.
Married to Elizabeth Lennox Maben on 24th October 1906 they had 2 children James & Elizabeth.
Speirs would have been exempt from conscription but he volunteered to join the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders in 1915. He was promoted to Lance Corporal, Corporal & then Sergeant and won the Military Medal for bravery in the field but was killed during the Battle Of Passchendaele in August 1917 at the age of 31.
Alan G. Brydon who wrote the well known songs Callin Doon The Line & On The Road To Passchendaele was commissioned to write a new song to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle Of Passchendaele in 1917. What he came up with was the song entitled Jimmy's Song / Sing For The Boys which was about Sgt. Jimmy Speirs a famous person not obliged to enlist but who volunteered with ordinary folk to serve his country in its time of need. A reflection of how selfless our forbears were to ensure our freedom. (Copyright Alan G. Brydon)
The song is played in this clip by the band, the piper and also sang by Jim English towards the end of the clip.
Alan's version of the song and accompanying video can be found on Youtube and has been played on the big screens at both Rangers Ibrox Stadium & Bradford City's Valley Parade.
Song Lyrics ~ Sing For The Boys (Jimmy's Song) Copyright: Alan G Brydon
Down at the drill hall, the boys all wait to sign
Each one determined to join the western line
They swear their allegiance to country and to King
Proud as the football sons they sing
A boy sees his hero, says hey that's Jimmy Speirs
He should be playing football, he's no ned to be here
But jimmy smiled politely, it's my duty nothing more
Boys we've a bigger goal to score
Sing For The Boys
Sing For Them All
All Sent To Fight, Till The Last Soldier Falls
Sing For The Boys
Row After Row
Destined To Lie Where The Red Poppies Grow
The boys land in Flanders, their journey's just begun
Jimmy's swapped his football for a bayonet and a gun
The songs the crowds were singing, still ringing in his ears
As he fought a a loyal volunteer
When the army marches homeward singing songs along their way
Jimmy's won't be with them, where he fell is where he'll stay
The Great War is over, it's no ninety minute game
Four years, three months and fourteen days
Chours
Since Alan wrote the song quite a number of marching bands have taken the song and put their own 'take' on it and have played it at various parades throughout Northern Ireland & Scotland.

N. IRELAND: ARMAGH: FORMER POLICEMAN SHOT DEAD
English/Nat
A former policeman was gunned down in front of his wife outside a supermarket in the centre of Armagh City, Northern Ireland, on Friday night.
Cyril Stewart, who retired last year from the police reserve after 18 years, died where he was ambushed by the gunmen.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
Former policeman Cyril Stewart was leaving a supermarket in the centre of Armagh City when he was gunned down in this carpark on Friday night.
He was with his wife, leaving a supermarket and approaching his car, when he was killed by two masked men.
Police said he was shot at least three times by the two men and died at the scene.
There has been no claim of responsibility.
Stewart, a Protestant, retired last year from the police reserve after 18 years.
Armagh City is religiously polarised between predominantly Catholic and Protestant areas, but the city centre where the shooting took place would be considered a neutral area.
Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlam appealed to anyone with information to go to the police. She said the killers must be caught.
A unionist councillor said he was an honest and decent man.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
My reaction is one of anger, horror, disgust that such a decent, upright man can be mowed down in cold blood by terrorist thugs.
Q: You knew Mr Stewart?
A: Yes I knew him very well. Knew him all my life, knew his family.
Q: What sort of man was he?
A: A very upright, decent man.

What happened earlier here this evening was that Mr Stewart was out with his wife doing the weekly shopping in the supermarket, in the Safeway supermarket which is behind me here. After he had finished the shopping he left the store with his wife to return to their jeep which was parked in the carpark. When they were almost back to the jeep they were approached by two masked men who opened fire and brutally and viciously gunned him down in front of his wife and other shoppers in the carpark. He died in the carpark later from his injuries and we believe the two men responsible ran across the carpark towards the chapel and made good their escape.

Police at the scene describe the killing as brutal.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Well it can only be described as a viscous, brutal killing of a man going about his normal private business, doing his weekly shopping with his wife.
SUPER CAPTION: Neville McCoubery, Detective Superintendent
A leading nationalist politician denounced Stewart's killing, saying it was the work of people determined to prevent a peace settlement in Northern Ireland.
Seamus Mallon, deputy leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (S-D-L-P) said They are imposing their will on an entire community but they cannot be allowed to succeed.
Northern Ireland's police chief, Ronnie Flanagan, blamed that and other recent attacks on former Irish Republican Army (I-R-A) members who left the organisation last year.

Who were the Black and Tans? (Actual footage of attacks)
The Black and Tans as a subject still arouses controversy in Ireland. The Black and Tans were mostly former soldiers brought into Ireland by the government in London after 1920 to assist the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) in their work.

What has become of the Irish in America
The Highwaymen Composer Kevin Smith From the album Where Is Liberty.
The album was composed with the artist permission for fundraising purposes to keep a Monaghan Republican in the US. He eventually lost his legal battle with US immigration.Quote from the album:
Over 40 million Americans claim Irish history. But apart from showing their Irishness on Saint Patrick's Day, for the most part they are uninformed of the history of Ireland ans silent about the abuses and denial of civil rights in Ireland.
Many do not even know that sectarian violence is still going on today mostly in Northern Ireland. Some do not even realize that one small island is still partitioned with the Northern portion held under British Tyranny.
