History heavyweight
His great-great grandfather fought in the Civil War and later plunged to his death in downtown Dayton after falling through a bridge scaffolding. His grandmother played host to seven or eight relatives who slept in her dining room for months to escape Dayton’s historic 1913 flood. These were some of the family stories Brady Kress grew up hearing. So it’s no wonder the history of Dayton has such a firm grip on his heart. Today, the Wright State University alumnus is president and CEO of Dayton History, an organization that preserves and displays some of the city’s most precious historical treasures. Kress not only helped create Dayton History, but in the past 13 years has expanded its reach and grown its exhibits. At the center of Dayton History is Carillon Historical Park, a 65-acre history museum that is home to the world’s first practical airplane and other historic artifacts from Dayton’s past. “Carillon park will never be finished. We’re always finding stories; we’re always expanding and growing,” said Kress, who serves as the park’s executive director. “At the end of the day, we want all of our guests to feel proud of where they come from.” The park currently has America’s oldest built steam locomotive. And then there is the crown jewel -- the original 1905 Wright Flyer III, the world’s first practical airplane. “This is THE plane the Wright brothers flew around Huffman Prairie,” Kress said. “It is the only airplane designated a national historic landmark.” More at
Ohio Snakes - First snake bite! 3 species and more! 4th of July Week 2019
We had a wonderful 4th of July week! Between fireworks and time with family we squeezed in some snake hunting / field herping!! The adventure is great, truly never know why you’ll find or see! So lucky to find another Queensnake and Brantley’s lifer Milksnake that happened to be pregnant / gravid as well as a beautiful adult Gartersnake! Special thanks to the awesome friends and family that went out adventuring with us this week!
Queensnake- Ohio Status: Species of Concern. Queensnakes are usually dark brown with a yellow stripe on the lower side of the body. The belly is also yellow with two brown stripes near the middle and two along the sides. It usually reaches 15-24 inches in length.
Eastern Milksnake- The milksnake is a true constrictor. It usually throws several loops of its muscular body around its prey. These coils do not crush, but merely exert enough pressure to prevent breathing. The victim soon suffocates and is then swallowed whole. Like other members of the kingsnake group, milksnakes feed primarily upon mice and other small rodents, as well as smaller snakes. They should be considered an asset, worthy of protection on anyone's property. The belly has a black and white checkerboard pattern. A Y-shaped or V-shaped light-colored blotch is usually present on the nape of the neck. The Eastern milksnake can grow to 2 or 3 feet.
Eastern Gartersnake - The Eastern gartersnake is one of Ohio's three gartersnakes, and it is the most abundant snake in Ohio. It is recognized by its pattern of three yellow stripes on a black or brown body. It can be found in almost every habitat type in the state.
The gartersnake's name is derived from the resemblance of its stripes to old-fashioned sock garters. The pattern can vary, but the Eastern gartersnake is marked with a pattern of three light stripes on a dark, 18-26-inch body. One narrow stripe runs down the center of the snake's back combined with a broad stripe on each side. The stripes are usually yellow, but can be shades of blue, green, or brown. Between the center and each of the side stripes are two rows of alternating black spots. The scales of the Eastern gartersnake are keeled (have ridges) and the snake's belly is yellow or pale green.

Governor Dayton Signs Agreement with USDA for $350 Million in Federal Funding to Protect and Improve Water Quality in Minnesota
Landmark agreement will provide direct funding to Minnesota farmers, while working to protect and improve waters across 60,000 acres in 54 Minnesota counties
ST. PAUL, MN – Governor Mark Dayton today signed an agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), securing $350 million in federal funding to protect and improve waters in 60,000 acres across 54 Minnesota counties. The new state-federal effort, the Minnesota Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP), will target areas of southern and western Minnesota facing significant water quality challenges, to protect and improve our natural resources for future generations.
“Minnesota is at a critical juncture in addressing our state’s serious water quality challenges,” said Governor Mark Dayton. “Through this landmark agreement, Minnesota will be better able to protect and improve our waters for our families, natural habitat, and our future. Clean water is everyone’s challenge, and everyone’s responsibility.”
Through the Minnesota CREP, farmers and agricultural landowners can voluntarily enroll land in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) Reserve easement program to create buffers, restore wetlands, and protect wellheads for drinking water. Farmers and other landowners who voluntarily participate in the program will be eligible for $350 million in federal funds for direct payments to farmers.
“This landmark agreement will protect Minnesota’s most sensitive natural resources for future generations to enjoy and ensure our farm families are compensated for their conservation efforts,” said Lt. Governor Tina Smith. “I thank Secretary Vilsack and the U.S. Department of Agriculture for working with us to establish this partnership.”
The Minnesota CREP will invest a total of $500 million in Greater Minnesota. To leverage the full $350 million in federal funds, the state of Minnesota must commit $150 million, of which $54.8 million has already been appropriated in past legislative sessions. Governor Dayton and Lt. Governor Smith have included $30 million for CREP in their 2017 Jobs Bill. Additional funds will be recommended through the Clean Water Fund, the Legislative-Citizens Commission on Minnesota Resources, and the Lesssard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council.
The Minnesota CREP is a five-agency effort, led by the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) and including the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The project will be completed in partnership with USDA – Farm Service Agency.
The agreement has the support of nearly 70 organizations and agencies in Minnesota including Pheasants Forever, Audobon Minnesota, Minnesota Rural Water Association, and the Minnesota Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts. To see a complete lists of organizations supporting Minnesota CREP click here.
Addressing Minnesota’s Clean Water Challenges
Despite the state’s abundance of lakes, rivers, groundwater and streams, more than 40 percent of Minnesota’s waters are currently listed as impaired or polluted. And damaging aquatic invasive species have infested more than 550 lakes statewide.
The water treatment plants and clean drinking water systems that make Minnesotans’ water safe to drink, cook with, and bathe in, are also in serious disrepair. Some communities still rely on wooden pipes, installed more than 100 years ago, for their drinking water. In fact, Minnesota is $11 billion behind in just maintaining our aging water treatment and delivery systems over the next 20 years. And initial testing indicates that 60 percent of the wells in Central Minnesota may not provide safe drinking water. That’s why Governor Dayton and Lt. Governor Smith have included $167 million in their 2017 Jobs Bill to repair and improve water treatment infrastructure across Greater Minnesota.
Governor Dayton has declared a “Year of Water Action” urging all Minnesotans to rethink water usage in daily life, make informed consumer choices, and talk to others about clean water protection and preservation. The Governor and Lt. Governor will host a Town Hall Water Summit at the University of Minnesota, Morris on January 27, 2017.
Chattanooga floods , Tennessee floods, a wild history
Chattanooga floods , Tennessee floods
Contemporary extension of the Hunter Museum of American Art
As the birthplace of the tow truck, Chattanooga is the home of the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum.[106] Another transportation icon, the passenger train, can be found at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, called TVRM by locals, which is the largest operating historic railroad in the South. Chattanooga is home to the Hunter Museum of American Art. Other notable museums include the Chattanooga History Center, the National Medal of Honor Museum, the Houston Museum, the Chattanooga African American Museum, and the Creative Discovery Museum.[107][108][109][110][111]
Arts and literature
Chattanooga has a wide range of performing arts in different venues. Chattanooga's historic Tivoli Theatre, dating from 1921 and one of the first public air-conditioned buildings in the United States, is home to the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera (CSO), which became the first merged symphony and opera company in the United States in 1985. The CSO performs under the baton of Kayoko Dan.[112] The Chattanooga Theatre Centre offers 15 productions each year in three separate theater programs: the Mainstage, the Circle Theater, and the Youth Theater.[113][114] Another popular performance venue is Memorial Auditorium.
Chattanooga hosts several writing conferences, including the Conference on Southern Literature and the Festival of Writers, both sponsored by the Arts & Education Council of Chattanooga.[115][116][117]
Attractions
Chattanooga touts many attractions, including the Tennessee Aquarium, caverns, and new waterfront attractions along and across the Tennessee River. In the downtown area is the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel, housed in the renovated Terminal Station. Also downtown are the Creative Discovery Museum, a hands-on children's museum dedicated to science, art, and music; an IMAX 3D Theatre, and the newly expanded Hunter Museum of American Art. The Tennessee Riverwalk, an approximately 13-mile-long (21 km) trail running alongside the river, is another attraction for both tourists and residents alike.
Across the river from downtown is the North Shore district, roughly bounded by the Olgiati Bridge to the west and Veterans Bridge to the east. The newly renovated area draws locals and tourists to locally owned independent boutique stores and restaurants, plus attractions along the Chattanooga Riverpark system, including Coolidge Park and Renaissance Park.[118][119]
The Chattanooga Zoo at Warner Park is located a short distance from the downtown area.
Parks and natural scenic areas provide other attractions. The red-and-black painted See Rock City barns along highways in the Southeast are remnants of a now-classic Americana tourism campaign to attract visitors to the Rock City tourist attraction in nearby Lookout Mountain, Georgia. The mountain is also the site of Ruby Falls and Craven's House.[120] The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is a steep funicular railway that rises from the St. Elmo Historic District to the top of the mountain, where passengers can visit the National Park Service's Point Park and the Battles for Chattanooga Museum.[121] Formerly known as Confederama, the museum includes a diorama that details the Battle of Chattanooga. From the military park, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Moccasin Bend and the Chattanooga skyline from the mountain's famous point or from vantage points along the well-marked trail system.[122]
The Heritage park is a park that lies in East Brainerd. Heritage park has a bocce ball court, a playground complete with swings, and a walking pavement. The park also features an off-leash dog park which is operated by the Friends of East Brainerd, the City of Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Department, McKamey Animal Center and the Goodwill Assistance Dog Academy.
Near Chattanooga, the Raccoon Mountain Reservoir, Raccoon Mountain Caverns, and Reflection Riding Arboretum and Botanical Garden boast a number of outdoor and family fun opportunities. Other arboretums include Bonny Oaks Arboretum, Cherokee Arboretum at Audubon Acres, and Cherokee Trail Arboretum. The Ocoee River, host to a number of events at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, features rafting, kayaking, camping, and hiking. Just outside Chattanooga is the Lake Winnepesaukah amusement park. The Cumberland Trail begins in Signal Mountain, just outside Chattanooga.
Mark Andrew from Roberson Wine talks about Bergstrom's Cumberland Reserve Pinot Noir
This Pinot Noir, named after Cumberland Road, where the Bergström family lived for many years in Portland, represents a selection from each of their five estate vineyards.
By blending from various sites, Josh Bergström feels he can make a wine that demonstrates the overall character of the Willamette Valley. This is rich with a silky texture, the concentrated dark fruit softened by elegant tannins and lifted by well-managed acidity.
One of the finest sources of Pinot Noir, not just in the United States, but in the world, Bergström Winery has consolidated its enviable reputation with a set of superb 2009s and 2010s.
The story began in 1999, when Josh and Caroline returned to the Willamette Valley, where his parents had been sowing and ploughing under rich green cover crops to revitalize the soil and prepare the land for vines. During his first year back from France, Josh planted vines and purchased grapes from other vineyards to make the first vintage of Bergström wine. He sourced fruit from other vineyards until 2001, when he produced his first wines using grapes from his family's vineyards.
The estate has more than 36 acres under vine, all of which are organically certified. Additionally, since 2000, the farming has been biodynamic and the results have impressed with an extra degree of vitality and freshness visible.
The amount of effort that Josh invests in the vineyard is one of the key reasons the wines are so impressive. Ten months of the year he is out on his tractor, all day, managing the vineyards. His approach is painstaking, meticulous and has been an inspiration to many young winemakers in the region.
Roberson Wine is an award-winning wine merchant based in Kensington, London and online. They specialise in Californian and French wines.
