Bezoekers van het nieuwe Red Star Line Museum op het Eilandje in Antwerpen, volgen het traject van de landverhuizers. Ze kunnen oude beelden zien, de verhalen van ooggetuigen horen en zelfs de geur van de landverhuizers - die ontsmet werden met azijn en benzeen - ruiken. Korte reportage in het Museum.

Het Red Star Line Museum nodigt u uit op een bewogen reis in het voetspoor van de landverhuizers. Maak kennis met de passagiers en vergezel hen op hun trip vanuit hun geboortedorp naar havenstad Antwerpen.
Met hun hele leven gepakt in enkele koffers, nemen miljoenen mensen vanaf 1800 de boot vanuit Europa naar Amerika. De Verenigde Staten en Canada zijn het beloofde land voor fortuinzoekers en iedereen op zoek naar een beter bestaan. De reis naar de nieuwe wereld begint voor vele mensen in een havenloods in Antwerpen. Tussen 1873 en 1934 banen de oceaanstomers van Red Star Line voor ongeveer 2 miljoen mannen, vrouwen en kinderen de weg naar een nieuw leven.

The Red Star Line… the name alone seems laden with promises, doesn't it? Thanks to Titanic-style boats this Atlantic Ocean passenger line helped no less than 2 million people make the crossing from New York to Antwerp or vice versa.
Their story is now told in a magnificent museum in Antwerp, fittingly called The Red Star Line Museum. Fans of Flanders went to have a look, together with American expat Howard Liebman.

The Last Passengers of The Red Star Line: The Only Survivor at the Museum Opening
Sonia Pressman Fuentes, co-founder of the National Organization for Women, is one of the last living survivors who escaped Europe on the original Red Star Line. Between its birth in 1872 and its demise in the 1930s, the Red Star Line carried thousands of desperate immigrants from Europe to America.
That story is told in the Red Star Line Museum in Antwerp, where the hopes, fears & condition of the migrants are highlighted in their personal stories, which, in turn, resonate in our own contemporary news from the Mediterranean.
Travel writer, +Roger Bray has been to the museum and is joining me to talk about it.

Antwerp October 2013 Walk from Central Station to Red Star Line Museum
On the way to Red Star Line Museum in Antwerp walk on the same route 2 million emigrants followed before sailing from Antwerp to America or Canada between 1873 and 1934.
Then from Centraal Station through de Keyserlei, Meir, the Cathedral, the Quays to Red Star Line office on Montevideostraat.
Now from Centraal Station through de Keyserlei, Meir, the Cathedral, the Quays and Museum aan de Stroom (MAS) to Red Star Line Museum on Montevideostraat.
Eastern European Immigrants
Red Star Line Museum emigrants during the facility's 60-year operating history were primarily from Eurpoean countries outside of Belgium, including Germans, French, Russians, Ukrainians, Poles, Romanians and others escaping economic hardships and religious persecution, especially in eastern regions, during the early years, and fleeing from the rise of the Nazi party in Germany during the 1920s and 30s. According to shipping records collected at the museum, about 25 percent of the emigrants taking the Red Star Line were Jewish and only 10 percent of all the emigrants were from Belgium. Genealogical records and assistance are available for visitors wishing to trace family histories.
Many of the Red Star Line passengers, arriving with tickets purchased from the company's branch offices across Europe, arrived in Antwerp by train and spent time in the city before passing through to the port for departure. After 1905 they arrived in -- and passed through -- the majestic Antwerp Central Station constructed by King Leopold II as a symbol of Belgium's economic prosperity, a function it still fulfills as a visitor highlight in the city and one of the world's most architecturally opulent railway stations. This is Antwerp's answer to New York's Grand Central Station as the Red Star Line Museum now takes its place as Belgium's counterpart to New York's Ellis Island Immigration Museum.
