STATIONARY ENGINES AT REDLANDS MUSEUM SEPTEMBER 2015
Some statioary engine running at the Redlands Museum in the Brisbane suburb of Cleveland. Queensland, Australia
Cleveland Point Lighthouse
The historical Cleveland Point Lighthouse was built in the 1860s and is fascinating because unlike typical lighthouses, the Cleveland Point Lighthouse is hexagonal rather than round and has weatherboards instead of metal cladding on its exterior. It is the only remaining timber-structured and timber-clad 19th century lighthouse in Moreton Bay.
The Old Cleveland Point Lighthouse was built between 1864-1865 on Cleveland Point, South of Brisbane. One of Queensland's earliest lighthouses, it was erected to light the way for small coastal steamers that serviced the farming settlements along the south coast of Moreton Bay.
The Historic Cleveland Rifle Range - Rare Construction Footage
Built in 1943 by the VDC (Volunteer Defence Corps).
The Rifle Range was built at the end of Weippin Street, Cleveland.
Situated behind the Redlands Hospital.
It was the only one of it's kind built to train troops and farmers.
It saw use by Australian and U.S servicemen.
It finally closed in the late 70's.
The Cairn (Monument built to commemorate the construction of the site) was moved to the Redlands Museum in 1981 where it stays to this day.
This amazing piece of History stood the test of time and sat untouched until the Redlands Council decided to Bull Doze it in 2005.
(They claim they had NO IDEA what it was).
Yet, it was clearly visible as to what it was used for, with the target uprights and pulleys still all there and also the concrete construction seen being dug in the video.
It was a true piece of History! And our ONLY Real Link to the War.
Funny enough, it was the same week that Russell Crowe narrated a show on TV about Australian History. And sure enough, our Rifle Range got shown to all of Australia.
Parts of it can still be seen to this day and a monument was erected on the site.
Which should read Piece of War History, Ruined by the Redland's Council.
The monument was only erected after I made them aware of their mistake.
Today it sits 3/4 buried in the bush land where it sat for all those years untouched.
I watch the video and look at all the hard work that went into building this amazing piece of history and shed a tear at how for no reason, the Council chose to demolish it with not even an apology.
To this day, you can easily find disused bullet casings on the site.
It truly is a piece of Redland's History! And well worth going to have a look at.
Many thanks to Will Mitchell who I interviewed for this mini documentary.
He was the only surviving member of the construction team that I could find who was still alive.

Cleveland Point Lighthouse & playground
The Cleveland Point Lighthouse was the second light to be erected on this site, replacing an earlier beacon established in 1847.
This lighthouse was built in 1864 and though being the the typical timber framed Queensland lighthouse is unusual because it is hexagonal rather than round and is clad with weather boards instead of the metal cladding common elsewhere in this state.
It was built to accommodate Cleveland, a once a thriving port in the middle of last century.
In 1872 the existing lens was replaced with the one from the Moreton Island light.
Two red sectors were installed in 1920 to indicate shoals off Peel Island, Cleveland Point, Banana Island and Raby Bay.
In 1934, the lighthouse was converted from kerosene to electric power. At this time the City Electric Light Company Limited became the responsible authority for the light.
The first local experiments in the use of laser beams as navigational aids were carried out from this lighthouse in 1969.
The light's second keeper, James Troy 1877-1927, holds the Australian record for being the longest serving lightkeeper at one lighthouse.

Bay Play Cleveland • Brisbane Kids
Cleveland’s first ever playcentre is HERE at last and you are going to be thrilled by what you find inside! I headed along for a sneak peek with my 3 Brisbane Kids to test out the equipment, sample the food and have a whole lot of fun!
Bay Play Cleveland is a locally owned business, meaning you know that there is a vested interest in ensuring this playcentre is amazing. I learnt that, while it caters for children aged 6 months to 16 years, it also encourages parents to join in, use the equipment, and be part of the fun.

History of Flying Boats in the Redlands - A Community Project - Wings Over Redlands
A community project involving Alexandra Hills Mens Shed, Cleveland Uniting Church Mens Shed, to build a replica of a Sunderland Flying Boat to feature in the Redlands Museum Exhibition - Wings over Redlands
It wasn’t until 1965, Ansett Airways recommenced flights out of Redland bay to Gladstone, while the Gladstone land-based airport was under reconstruction. This Aircraft was the Sandringham VH-BRF Islander.
This was the start of an important piece of history of flying boats in the Redlands
