A visit to Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Soweto, South Africa
To learn more you can visit their site here: Here is what they say on their website:
Regina Mundi is the largest Roman Catholic Church in South Africa. The Latin 'Reginae Mundi' means Queen of the World and refer to the Virgin Mary. The church was built in 1961 and official opened on the 24th of July 1962 by Johannes Baptista Montini, a cardinal of Milan.
Located in the middle of Soweto, in Rockville, in the neighbourhood of Moroka, from afar you're greeted by the A-shaped exterior of the building which is quite ordinary in design. Its main feature is the vast interior that can accommodate as much as 2000-5000 people.
The Church first wrote its name in South Africa's history books during apartheid, when it opened its doors to anti-apartheid groups and provided shelter to activists. It was during the June 16, 1976 student uprisings, protesting students fled to Regina Mundi from Orlando Stadium to escape the police's bullets and teargas canisters. The police followed the students into the church, firing live ammunition and damaging the marble altar and crucifix. Bullet holes are still visible in the church ceiling and damaged marble stand provide tangible evidence of the violence of these police raids and the ensuring rush to evacuate the building.
Due to the role it played as a place of gathering for the people of Soweto in the years before, during, and after the anti-apartheid struggle, it is often referred to as the people's church of the people's cathedral. From 1995 to 1998, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu presided over Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings at Regina Mundi.
Reconciliation campaign to be launched at Regina Mundi Church in Soweto
The South African Council of Churches will Wednesday launch a reconciliation campaign - The South Africa We Pray For' at Regina Mundi Church in Soweto. The campaign will cast the spot-light and focus onto the issue of healing and reconciliation for South Africa as a whole, its people, and the conditions under which they live. The objective of the campaign is to work for a just, reconciled, equitable and sustainable society. It will also focus on a society free of racial, tribal, xenophobic and gender prejudices, free of corruption and deprivation, and with enough food and shelter for every citizen; and for each child born to grow to their God-given potential. For more on the SACC's initiative, lets cross to our reporter in Soweto, Gillian Pillay.

thanks to the people of South Afrika for their warm welcome during FIFA World Cup 2010. I would not have expected that only sixteen years after the change all black people will be extreamly friendly to a white person from a foreign country. in the morning of the day of the opening match for the 2010 FIFA World Cup when I drove through Johannisburg Industria people were outside of companies blowing Vuvuzelas singing and dancing. I will never forget those pictures. there were inqueries from medial from all over the world for interview. unfortunately FIFA didn't give their ok for interviews to broadcast a message of gratefulness.

Regina Mudi Church in Soweto
A major meeting place for freedom fighters during the struggle against Apartheid, this Catholic Church was repeatedly invaded by police to break up the meetings and arrest the leaders. The police actually desecrated the church, shot it up, and the original bullet holes are still in place.
