Manizales is the capital city of one of the smallest Colombian departments.
The city is located in the northern part of the Colombian Coffee-Growers Axis (Eje Cafetero), near the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, which has an altitude of 5,321 meters (17,457.3 ft).

The Colombia coffee growing axis, also known as the coffee triangle, was declared an UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011. Many consider this region to produce the finest quality coffee in the world. This video documents some of my travel through the mountainous Risaralda, Caldas, and Quindio departments including visits to ecotourism rich destinations such as Santa Rosa de Cabal, Marsella, Salamina, Manizales, and Salento (home to Cocora Valley and the tallest palms and monocots in the world).

Other common activities are bird watching, mountain biking, horseback riding, rafting, paragliding, and swimming in the rivers.
The local restaurants specialize in cooking the locally produced rainbow trout in various ways, mainly cooked and served with a wide variety of sauces and fried plantains.
