Sofia is the capital of the Balkan nation of Bulgaria. It’s in the west of the country, below Vitosha Mountain. The city’s landmarks reflect more than 2,000 years of history, including Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Soviet occupation. Medieval Boyana Church has 13th-century frescoes. Built by the Romans in the 4th century, St. George Rotunda Church has medieval and Ottoman decoration dating to the 10th century.
Plovdiv is an ancient city built around 7 hills, in southern Bulgaria. The Regional Archaeological Museum chronicles the city’s history, with exhibits including mosaic panels, clay lamps and early coins. The Roman-era Ancient Theater of Philippopolis, which once seated around 6,000, now hosts opera and concerts.

Ancient Thracian | Roman City | Kabile Part 2 | 2nd BC | Artifacts & Treasures| Museum
The Ancient Thracian city Kabile, which was established at the end of the 2nd millennium BC, is located on the southeastern slope of a tall hill known as Zaychi Vrah (“Rabbit’s Mount) at a curve of the Tundzha River, with a rock acropolis shrine on the hill’s top.
After the collapse of Alexander the Great’s empire, in the 3rdcentury BC, Kabile was ruled once again by the Ancient Thracians. It was conquered by the Roman Empire in 71 BC, and was later incorporated into the Roman province of Thrace. It was an important regional center in the Late Antiquity as well. The city of Kabile was modeled after the Ancient Greek cities at the time. It boasts a stone acropolis with a unique rock relief of the ancient goddess of Cybele, a protector of the city. In the 4th century AD, Kabile was conquered by the Goths, and was later destroyed for good by the Avars.
Kabile was located on the crossroads of several major ancient roads, and the fact there is no modern-day settlement built on top of it makes the Ancient Thracian city a fruitful place for archaeological research and cultural tourism.
Kabile was declared an archaeological site by the Bulgarian authorities in 1927; in 1969, it was granted the status of a monument of culture of national importance, and a national archaeological preserve, and in 1979, it was made part of a nature preserve.

#TesserabyTessera | The Past of The Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis | Ep. 1 of 2
*PLEASE SWITCH ON THE ENGLISH SUBTITLES*
Some stories stand the test of time, only to be told again and again. Oftentimes, we need to collect various pieces in order to bring them together in one common story, to become one.
In the same way, archaeologist Zheny Tankova, restorer Elena Kantareva, and epigraph Nikolay Sharankov, together with their teams, have been exploring the Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis for years, collecting its pebble-stone history.
We are grateful to:
Zheny Tankova, Archaeologist, Regional Archaeological Museum - Plovdiv
Elena Kantareva-Decheva, Restorer, associate professor, AMDFA University - Plovdiv

Tzonevo lake and landmark Wonderful Rocks - to catch the moment
Wonderful rocks is a natural landmark in Bulgaria, Varna region. The nature landmark was declared in 1949. It covers an area of almost 13 hectares.
Wonderful rocks are located on the shore of Tsonevo lake, representing a set of three rock formations in the form of needles with a height between 15 and 40 - 50 meters. The rock phenomenon is the result of the erosion of the wind and the waters of the Luda Kamchia river on the soft limestone rock. Through the entire length of the Wonder Rocks, three tunnels were excavated, passing the road between the villages of Asparuhovo and Dobromir. The main road connecting the cities of Provadia and Aitos and the Varna - Plovdiv railway line passes next to it.

18. DEEP EXCAVATION HOLE AT SITE
19. WIDE OF EXCAVATION SITE
STORY: It is a tiny, 15-centigramme gold bead that can easily be lost between one's fingers. But to Bulgarian archaeologists it is larger than life - they believe it is Europe's oldest processed gold ornament.
A team of archaeologists found it during excavation works at a pre-historic settlement near the village of Yunatsite in southern Bulgaria and dated it back to 4,500-4,600 years BC.
That makes the finding some 200 years older than the gold jewellery that were found at the Chalcolithic (Copper Age) Necropolis in the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Varna in 1972, the oldest golden artefacts ever discovered so far according to Bulgarian archaeologists.
I have no doubt that it is older than the gold found in Varna's necropolis, says Yavor Boyadzhiev, Associated Professor at at the Bulgarian Academy of Science, adding that a laboratory analysis is now pending to determine the purity of the precious artefact.
Even though it's a tiny piece, Boyadzhiev calls the gold ornament a very important discovery for history as it is supposed to have been processed at the very first urban settlement in Europe.
The bead, Boyadzhiev believes, belonged to an ancient society, which moved to the settlement, some 8 km from the modern town of Pazardzhik, from Anatolia in today's Turkey around 6,000 BC.
We are talking about the year 5700 BC, or 5800 BC, which is about 1,500 years before the first urban civilization in southern Mesopotamia, Sumer and associated cultures, Boyadzhiev said about the age of the settlement.
We are 90 percent sure that this gold is produced locally. These people belonged to a highly cultured society and they had sophisticated workshops for all kinds of goods and things, he added.
The team has so far unearthed remains of a prehistoric town with a total area between 100,000 and 120,000 square metres, which had a 2.8-metre high fortress wall. People, who had lived there worshipped birds, the archaeologists believe as they have found more than 150 ceramic figures depicting birds over the years.
Boyadzhiev said that, according to researchers who have worked in Mesopotamia, settlements whose area totals over 0.7-0.8 hectares are regarded as towns.
He said the bead - 4 mm in diameter, which was dug up in a small residential house two weeks ago, dates back from the period, in which metals like copper and gold started to be used for a first time.
These lands were invaded by hostile tribes, coming from the north-east, who destroyed the settlement around 4,100 years BC and caused its extinction.
Bulgaria, a Balkan state of 7.2 million, hosts numerous Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age settlement mounds as well as significant remains of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine urban centres.
The bead will be exposed in the historical museum in Pazardzhik, a museum worker said after showing Reuters the ornament before it was sent for analysis.

Plovdiv Old Town, Bulgaria 2012 - the City of the Seven Hills
Another video Plovdiv, part 1
Plovdiv (Bulgarian: Пловдив pronounced [plɔfˈdif]) is the second-largest city in Bulgaria. Plovdiv is situated in a fertile region of south-central Bulgaria on the two banks of the Maritsa River. The city has historically developed on seven syenite hills, some of which are 250 m (820.21 ft) high. Because of these hills, Plovdiv is often referred to in Bulgaria as The City of the Seven Hills. There are many remains preserved from antiquity such as the ancient Plovdiv Roman theatre, Roman odeon, Roman aqueduct, Roman Stadium, the archaeological complex Eirene, and others.

The position of Kosovo in Balkans is extremely good because it is central and everything joins up at one place, south meets north, north meets south. It is a crossroad in the old Dardania or what is known today as Kosovo. Kosovo is loaded with archaeological sites and findings. Just in the Dukagjini plain (western Kosovo) there are some 540 villages and out of those we have archaeological sites in 370 of them. These are sites dating from the early Neolithic period up to the late Medieval Ages. So I can say that Kosovo is an archaeological treasure not only in the Balkans but in Europe as well.

LEAD IN:
Archaeologists in Kosovo have recently discovered a site believed to date from the 4th century B.C.
It's one of many similar finds made since the province came under U.N. and NATO control in 1999.
But while the ancient territory might be an interesting historical find, the authorities in the province face obstacles in providing basic funding for the archaeologists.
STORYLINE:
These archaeologists are excited about their latest find.
They believe the site they are excavating in the southern Kosovan village of Halilaq could be nearly 2000 years old.
Indeed, Kosovo is a nation rich is archaeological treasure.
It was discovered at a site near Pristina in 1956.

Плевен от птичи поглед /Pleven,Bulgaria bird's eye view
The town of Pleven is situated in the middle part of the Danube hilly lowland, 160 km from the capital – Sofia, 320 km from the Black Sea and 30 km south from the Danube river. One can reach the town by the first-class road Sofia – Varna (Е83). The town population is about 135,000 people. Pleven falls in an area of temperate-continental climate with large temperature amplitudes from - 15 ° C during the winter to + 35 – 40 ° C during the summer.
The history of the town and the region dates back to thousands of years ago. The earliest evidences about human presence in the region are related to the end of the 5th millennium BC. In the beginning of the new era these lands became part of the Roman Empire. The Roman road station of Storgozia situated by the present day’s location of Pleven, and later a fortress with the same name, were constructed on the road from the Roman town Ulpia Escus (nowadays its remains are situated by the village of Gigen) to Philipopolis (nowadays’ Plovdiv).
During the Middle Ages the settlement was a strong fortress with well developed Bulgarian crafts and mostly trading with leather, wool, tobacco and cattle. The settlement of Slavs and Bulgarians in the 6th – 7th century led to changing the name of the locality - Pleven. Pleven became famous mostly for its active participation in the war between Russia and Turkey in 1877-1878. The town was under siege for five months, and the bloodiest battles between the two belligerent empires – Russia and Turkey were conducted around it. On 10 December 1877 the victorious outcome of the war was established, the Russian army succeeded in defeating and capturing the army of Osman Pasha, and the day was announced an official day of Pleven.
Some of the most interesting landmarks of the town are the Historical Museum, the Panorama “Pleven Epopee”, the Wine Museum in the Kaylaka Park and the remains of Storgoziya Fortress.
The historical museum is housed in an impressive two-storey building – a monument of culture built for cantonment in 1884 – 1888 according to an Italian project.
The museum expositions occupy 24 halls with an area of 7,000 square meters in the building, as well as a park with an open exposition with an area of 37 dca. The Archaeology exposition includes exponents of Prehistory, the Roman Age and the Bulgarian Middle Ages. Among the most attractive of them are collections of flint labor tools from 50 – 45 thousands of years BC, an original residence of the 5 thousand years BC, a copy of the Valchitran Golden Treasure, etc.
The exposition in Ethnography section presents the material and spiritual culture in Pleven and the nearby settlements – traditional lodgings, crafts, festal costumes and jewels of the 19th and the 20th century.
The Revival section keeps valuable documents and articles from the Age of Bulgarian Revival, and the Contemporary History section traces the development of industry and culture in Pleven after the Liberation in 1878.
The regional Historical Museum in Pleven also keeps an exposition dedicated to nature, which includes samples from the local nature, as well as a petrified thigh bone of Archidiscodon – a prehistoric animal from the group of elephant-like animals, which lived on our lands during the Pliocene Age before 3.5 – 4 million years.
One of the most attractive museum halls is dedicated to the opera singer Gena Dimitrova (1941 – 2005), who was born in the Pleven village of Beglizh. Here one can see a lot of personal belongings of the opera queen, donated to the museum by her family, as well as originals and copies of her stage costumes, in which she had sung on global scenes.
The Panorama “Pleven Epopee 1877” is the only monument of its kind on the Bulgarian
Fortress of Cherven Bulgaria
Fortress of Cherven Bulgaria
The medieval town and fortress of Cherven is located in the region of Polomieto, north of village of Cherven. The fortress is situated and deeply incised and with sloped rock shores and many meanders of the river Cherni Lom, on a high rock hill, surrounded at its three sides by a river. The citadel was build during the time of the Roman Emperor Justinian (VI-th century) and later the construction was significantly distinguished with the larger stone blocks.
Archaeological founds in Cherven (coin treasures, jewelleries, epigraph monuments, pottery, everyday life artifacts, craft tools, armaments etc) are preserved in the National History Museum in Sofia and the Rousse Regional History Museum.
The site was announced National Architectural Reserve in 1965 and nowadays is very popular tourist attraction.
