scenic views from Cochem Castle (Reichsburg Cochem) in Cochem, Germany (long version)
This is a long version of scenic video views of the Moselle Valley and the town of Cochem, Germany from the castle in Cochem, Reichsburg Cochem, on July 28, 2019. As you can see, the castle affords spectacular views. As high as it is and steep, it is amazing it was unable to be successfully defended and was ruined by the French around 1689. I may make a short version for those who just want to see the view and are not interested in details. For those interested in vineyards, notice that these look really good. When we get to the Rhine (and I have posted videos of that of course), suddenly the vineyards look awful. Hard to understand such a big difference such a short distance away.

We heard so many good things about the Mosel Valley in Germany that we had to visit. Probably the most well known town there is Cochem, it has a beautiful castle on top of a hill surrounded by vineyards, absolutely beautiful! After visiting the castle we went up a mountain with a chairlift to experience a beautiful view over Cochem city.
Also an absolute must when visiting the Mosel valley is to taste the local wine!
I heard Cochem is very nice during Christmas time also, so don't hesitate to make this your next Christmas holiday destination!

HISTORY OF Cochem CASTLE, It is generally assumed that Cochem Castle was built around the year 1000 by the palatinate count Ezzo, son and successor to palatinate count Hermann Pusilius. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1051 when Richeza, Ezzo's oldest daughter and former Queen of Poland, gave the castle to her nephew palatine count Henry I. Even when Ezzo's family ceased to be palatinate counts, Cochem remained connected to the title of the palatinate counts. Years later, in 1151, king Konrad III put an end to a dispute concerning the succession by occupying the castle with troupes.

Cochem, Germany - Altstadt (old town) & Moselle River Promenade
Our day trip to picturesque and charming Cochem, Germany. Located on the Moselle (aka Mosel) River, the town is dominated by the magnificent castle overlooking it: Reichsburg Castle, which has been in written existence since about the year 1050.
We strolled the Moselle Promenade area as well as the historic old town area. As always, Ed does the narration you hear, while I did the majority of the still photography and then edited everything for upload to You Tube.
The music you hear during the views of the still photos section, is from the free You Tube music library and is called Retreat by Jason Farnham.

About The Reichsburg Cochem And Its History
Cochem Castle dates back to the first millennium, the year 1000 A.D. It was the home of the Palatinate counts and was built on the orders of Count Ezzo.
The first historical mention of this castle is from 1051, when it was given as a gift to a nephew, Henry I by Richeza, the oldest daughter of Ezzo and one-time Queen of Poland.
The Reichsburg Cochem was used mainly as a defensive structure. It was said that at one time, it housed as many as 40,000 knights!
The Sun King Louis XIV attacked and burned the Reichsburg to the ground in 1688. It wasn’t until 1868 that Mr. Louis Ravené, a Berlin businessman, began to reconstruct it in the Neo-Gothic style that we see today.
