Walks in Surrey: Exploring Reigate Castle and Grounds

Today I am out exploring with Matthew Holdsworth of Reigate in Surrey. He is showing me some of the town's heritage, notably the first road tunnel, the charming town hall and the ruined castle and grounds.

King William I granted the land around Reigate to one of his supporters, William de Warenne, who was created Earl of Surrey in 1088. It is believed that his son, William de Warenne, 2nd Earl of Surrey, ordered that Reigate Castle be built, although the de Warennes had their southern base in Lewes, Sussex, as well as castles in Yorkshire and Normandy.

Walks in England: Exploring St Mary's Church, Reigate, Surrey

Today I am out with Matthew Holdsworth exploring St Mary's parish church in Reigate, Surrey.

Work on this large church (one of Surrey's biggest) began in about 1200—the unexpectedly noble arcades date from then—and continued until the 15th century. Henry Woodyer (1845) and George Gilbert Scott, Jr. (1877–81) restored it and largely created its present appearance.

We also discover Francis Frith's final resting place and some fascinating medieval knight's helmets.

MOST HAUNTED CHURCH - St Mary’s, Reigate, England.

We decided to visit Saint Mary’s church in Reigate, which has been dubbed the most haunted church in Surrey, England.

There has been reports of people hearing a phantom choir at night when the church is locked & empty, a lady in a white dress that many people have seen, also a young girl dressed in 19th century clothes skipping though the graves.

We will return at some point for a night time visit.

Today, Matthew Holdsworth and I meet David Gilmore, Tower Captain of St Mary's Church in Reigate. David very kindly agreed to take us up the tower to meet the ten Bells and then lead us up on to the roof to enjoy the stunning views.

After a car overturned near the Yew Tree pub, police shut the road, causing a long diversion and a lot of traffic - thank goodness it was a Saturday!

The video is a far cry from HD although I have preserved the 50Hz refresh rate which is more than can be said for most videos on YouTube, HD or SD.
Shame I didn't have the car radio playing the music of the day, although it would have lead to numerous copyright claims.

#60 A Wander Around Reigate Fort

Back in April 2018, my buddy Paul and I took a local walk along the Reigate Hill section of The North Downs Way and this is a new edit of our visit to Reigate Fort. The Fort is positioned on a Hill overlooking the South Downs and was part of a series of 13 mobilisation centres which were built between 1890 and 1903 to protect London from any potential invasion. It was used in World War I for ammunition storage and in World War II Canadian troops were stationed there. Reigate Fort has been looked after by the National Trust since 1932,and was fully restored in 2000.

Walks in England: Exploring Betchworth Castle

Betchworth Castle is a mostly crumbled ruin of a fortified medieval stone house with some tall, two-storey corners strengthened in the 18th century, in the north of the semi-rural parish of Brockham. It is built on a sandstone spur overlooking the western bank of the Mole in Surrey in England. The ruin is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is in the lowest category of listed architecture, Grade II, 1.2 miles due east of Dorking railway station in Dorking and 4 miles due west of Reigate.
