#Goa :Reis Magos Fort
Reis Magos is a village located on the northern bank of the Mandovi River in Bardez, Goa, opposite to the capital city of Panjim. The village is famous for two of Goa’s famous structures; the Reis Magos Fort, and the Reis Magos Church – the first church in Bardez. Reis Magos is the Portuguese name for the Three Wise Men from the Bible.
Predating Fort Aguada by half a century, a second, smaller fort that crowns the headland jutting into the narrowest stretch of the Mandovi, almost facing the capital city Panjim, is the Reis Magos Fort. This Fort, surrounded by sturdy laterite walls studded with typically Portuguese turrets, was erected in 1551 to protect the narrowest point at the mouth of the Mandovi estuary. It was enlarged subsequently on different occasions and finally re-erected in 1707. The fort formerly accommodated viceroys and other dignitaries newly arrived from, or en route to, Lisbon, and in the early eighteenth century proved a linchpin in the wars against the Hindu Marathas, who were never able to take it. The bastion was used as a prison. Though far inferior in size to the fortress of Mormugao, yet standing on an eminence, it commands a splendid view all around. It is in a good state of preservation and is defended by 33 guns and accommodation for a small garrison. Towards the east, at a little distance from it, flows a spring with abundance of excellent water, while at its base rises the church of the Reis Magos, ascended by a beautiful flight of stairs.

Hi Guys,
As I mentioned I had been to Goa for like 10 days on vacation. This Reis Magos fort was one of the places that I checked out. Actually a music event was happening in the fort, so the entry was free. Reached the place at about 3pm I guess and left at 12pm :). Had fun in the fort listening to the music and checking out the fort. It was so beautiful in the night especially with all the lights and the climate was perfect.

Here is a small clip of their practice in school: on 13/12/14, Our singers and musician students from Class 7-10 along with Music Sir Gavin Carvalho, Music Teacher Vanessa and Heritage Club Co-Ordinator Sir Wilson, participated in the Inter School Music & Song Compilation Competition at Reis Magos Fort, Verem, Barde, they had to prepare a 1 minute song bringing out the importance of the sea to share with the best musicians and international experts for the Reis Magos International Festival that is being held now in December'14. We won the 2nd place!

Reis Magos Fort
Just a quick note to my fans and followers and those who just happen to come across my work.
I’ve recently spotted my drone clips being used in someone else’s video. The clips were cropped deleting the watermark and at the end of the video no credit was given. Instead it said the video was shot by someone else.
So please if you like my work and want to use it. I’d really appreciate it if you took a couple of mins just to write to me or even credit me, tag me, whatever’s best just to say that you used my clip.
I’ve had so many people write to me asking to use the videos for a project or other purposes. Some have been generous to pay me for my work and some have given me a credit.

This edifice was built on the ruins of a pagoda in 1550 by the Franciscans, with the sum allotted to them by the Government, and bears a crown on its façade, and the royal arms on its sanctuary and other places. The pavement is dotted with inscriptions, the most important of which, found in the sanctuary, indicated the spot enclosing the remains of Dom Luís de Ataíde, Count of Athoughia, who twice held the position of Viceroy of Portuguese India and Goa. It was used as a residence for viceroys and later converted to a fortress. It was occupied briefly between 1798-1813 by the British Army. It was subsequently abandoned by the military and served as a prison until 1993

The Mandovi River, also known as Mahadayi or Mhadei river, is described as the lifeline of the state of Goa, India. The river has a length of 77 kilometers, 29 km in Karnataka and 52 kilometers in Goa. It originates from a cluster of 30 springs at Bhimgad in the Western Ghats in the Belgaum district, Karnataka. The river, has 2032 km2 catchment area in Karnataka while 1,580 km2 catchment area in Goa. With its cerulean waters, Dudhsagar Falls, and Varapoha Falls it is also known as the Gomati in a few places. Mandovi and the Zuari River are the two primary rivers in the state of Goa.
The Mandovi enters Goa from the north via the Sattari Taluka. The Mandovi flows through Cumbarjua, Divadi and Chodné, eventually pouring into the Arabian Sea. Mandovi joins with the Zuari at a common point at Cabo Aguada, forming the Mormugao harbour. Panaji, the state capital and Old Goa, the former capital of Goa, are both situated on the left bank of the Mandovi. The river Mapusa is a tributary of the Mandovi.
The Cumbarjuem Canal, which links both rivers, has made the interiors of the Mandovi accessible to ships carrying iron ore. Iron ore is Goa's prime mineral and it is mined in the eastern hills. Three large freshwater isles — Divar, Chorao and Vashee are present in the Mandovi near the town of Old Goa. The island of Chorao, is home to the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, named after the renowned ornithologist Salim Ali. A regular ferry transports the inhabitants between the isles and the mainland.

We were the only guests at Vivenda Rebelo. We had a detached two-room bungalow with a pleasant entry. Deric gave us lots of water because I was fasting due to an upset stomach.
He gave us some time to rest, and Yoong took the opportunity to wash some clothes. He provided a rack to help dry them. At about 3 pm he drove us through Panaji and across the river to the Reis Magos Fort, where he waited half an hour for us to look around. Bed and Breakfast places like this are so much better than hotels.
Deric dropped us at a restaurant, where Yoong had seafood rice, and I had nothing. He picked us up about half an hour later. On the way, he stopped at the cathedral and a big temple so we could see the night view of them all lit up.

Reis Magos Fort | Verem Bardez-Goa | TRAVEL #5
Reis Magos fort was one of the first bastions of the Portuguese rulers against enemy invasion. The structure exudes majesty and grandeur and though it is not the biggest fort in Goa, it still commands respect and awe.
Pre-dating even the prestigious and much larger Fort Aguada, and situated at the narrowest point of the mouth of the Mandovi, it’s skilful construction and strategic placement made this fort nearly impregnable and it was an important asset to the Portuguese colonists.
The fort which stands on the hill overlooking the Reis Magos Church today, is by no means the original structure, nor is it the first to have been constructed in this locale. The first incarnation of this fort was a military outpost, built by the Adil Shahi Sultanate of Bijapur.
When the Sultanate was defeated by the Portuguese, a fort was constructed in 1551 to be the first line of defence for the then capital, Velha Goa. This fort was enlarged at various times, before being completely reconstructed in 1707.
The Reis Magos Fort was initially used to house Viceroys and other dignitaries who were arriving from or departing to Portugal. However, with the threat of invasion from neighbouring Indian states, the fort became a military stronghold and in 1739 it was used to repel the enemies that occupied much of the Bardez taluka.
Such was the construction and strategic placement of the fort that the invaders were unable to sack it. It is said that the British occupied the fort from 1798 for the duration of the Napoleonic wars. With the decreased threat of naval attack at the dawn of the 1900’s, and with the shifting of the capital of Goa from Velha Goa to Panjim, this fort fell into disuse as a military fortification.
Architecture
Constructed of the readily available and extremely durable laterite rock, the walls are high and formidable due to their steep slopes. There are cylindrical turrets or watchtowers, typical of Portuguese fort architecture at strategic points along the walls. The fort also has within its walls a fresh water spring which kept the troops well-supplied with this essential resource.
Boasting an arsenal of 33 cannons of various sizes, the fort was well equipped to deal with invaders making their way up the Mandovi to the then capital of Goa. However, it was not sufficient to stop the insurgence of Dutch ships and was replaced by the Fort Aguada as the main safeguard of the Portuguese Colony.
The fort could accommodate a fully armed garrison and has a wealth of underground rooms and passages.
From the early 1900’s the fort lost its position as a strategic line of defence and was subsequently converted into a prison, in which capacity it continued to be used until 1993. Having weathered two and a half centuries of monsoon winds and rains, as well as the damage inflicted by invading parties, the fort was in need of restoration.
The fort now serves as a cultural centre and is a prominent tourist attraction along with the nearby Reis Magos Church.
An enduring testament to the skill and strategic planning of man, this fort is well worth a visit. A visit here can be teamed up with one to the Reis Magos Church which lies only a short distance away, and is also a tourist hotspot. The fort commands glorious views of the surrounding countryside which make for great photographs by which to remember your Goa vacation.
Once you are done with all this history and sight-seeing, you can sit on the other side of the road, on the sand or rocks that are scattered and gaze at thePanjim city across the river with all its rush while you sit calmly in this peaceful place and think about all the history, the battles, the victories, the religion, the traditions. If all this is too much to absorb, towards the far east is a spring where you cand cool off. Later, you can head for lunch or dinner to ‘terry’s’, that is situated at the ferry, an excellent restaurant that caters to your taste buds. And if you are done with the peace and quiet, you can head towards Calangute or Candolim, a part of Goa which is more alive.
