Nature and Life Episode 137 (Rare Plants of Bangladesh)
We have a vast Kingdom of Plants around us.
We see very little of this kingdom in our city life.
These plants are being used in various ways in our daily life.
But many of our plants have become rare due to our negligence and irresponsibility.
We are losing some of our essential plats.
Those rare plants include timber plants, medicinal plants as well as ornamental plants.
Now a days, these plants are hardly seen except certain places.
Talipalm is one of those very rare plants of Bangladesh.
This very tall plant is now at the brink of extinction.
With deforestation, we are also losing various plants.
Urium is a large sized evergreen tree.
Its fruits look like mangos but smaller in size.
Few of this species can be seen in forests of Chittagong, Hill Tracts and Sylhet.
Another similar plant is Chikrashi.
It produces very heavy and resilient timber that is used in construction works and to make high quality furniture.
This plant is rare now.
Along with these, many other flowering trees, herbs and shrubs have also become rare.
Some orchids of evergreen forest have become rare as well.
The number of some plants in Haor areas has been decreased substantially.
Biyash is medium sized forest plant.
Light reddish-brown coloured timber of Biyash serve many purposes.
This plant is now rare.
Indian Oak and Three-Leaved-Caper are common plants of all Haor and low wetland areas.
Their number has also been decreased.
Bamboos are common plant of our country, yet some species of Bamboos are going extinct.
A large portion of medicinal plants is in the list of rare plants.
Snakeroot, Dudhia, Andrographis, Haritaki, Sprenger's Asparagus, Beleric Myrobalan are among those plants.
Haritaki is a medium to large sized plant.
It's a deciduous medicinal plant.
The most valuable part of Haritaki is its fruit.
Beleric Myrobalan is a large sized medicinal plant.
They are also in the list of endangered species.
Many of our ornamental climbers and shrubs are gradually vanishing.
Dulichapa flowers bloom in our hilly areas at the beginning of summer.
It's a large sized bushy evergreen tree.
It has white flowers.
This Dulichapa is the only wild Magnolia of our country which is at the brink of extinction.
Padauk is medium sized tree of our rural areas.
At the beginning of summer, its branches become covered with yellow coloured flowers.
RajAshok blooms in late autumn.
Yellowish-golden coloured flowers in its branches brighten up the nature of Bangladesh.
This very sight has become rare now.
Saraca thaipingensis is also gorgeous but rare.
Karnikara tree is a small sized tree with branches spread on its top.
Its flowers bloom in spring.
Its flowers have unique Colour and smell.
Brownea blooms in spring to brighten up our surroundings.
Maybe they are named Brownea because their young leaves stay hanging like bird's tail.
Many of its bright red coloured flowers bloom together in cluster and the cluster looks like a complete single flower.
Kurchi is a small sized tree.
Its flowers bloom with its young leaves at the beginning of spring.
At the end of spring blooms UdoyPoddo.
Few of this tree can be seen throughout the country.
Anjon is a small sized bushy tree with deep green leaves.
Bunches of its small bluish-violet coloured flowers bloom on its trunk and branches.
Presently, these diversified ornamental plants have substantially been decreased.
Palam is a medium sized tree of hilly region.
It can also be seen in rural areas.
At the end of spring, its deep red coloured flowers bloom on its branches' edge.
Its oval buds can be seen on its branches.
Muskund is a large sized evergreen tree.
During spring, Muskund enchants us with its smell and beauty.
Its flower buds are brownish-yellow coloured.
Nilmonilota is a climber.
Its tender stalk spread downward and takes a bushy shape.
The whole plant becomes blue with flowers in spring.
But beauty of these plants are hardly seen now a days.
These rare plants need to be conserved properly and at the same time they need to be propagated in various places.
If any plant survives, it will help in maintaining natural balance as well as fulfilling our economic and aesthetic demands.
And our Kingdom of Plants will survive with its dignity.
