Beijing's Brutal Evictions | 101 East
The Chinese authorities call them the low-end population - thousands of rural migrant workers who flee the poverty of rural China for better-paid jobs in metropolises like Beijing.
They help build, clean and feed the capital. But they no longer fit the dazzling image President Xi Jinping wants for Beijing. His dream is a showpiece capital, befitting China's ambitions as a world superpower.
Beijing is fine-tuning its five-year plan: to reduce the city's population by 15 percent by 2020, and they are pursuing this goal with unrelenting ruthlessness.
To help transform this megacity, the capital has launched a campaign to get rid of its poorest residents.
Entire neighbourhoods are being bulldozed, with residents often only given a few days to pack up their belongings and find new homes.
Xin Jie is one of them. She was forced to abandon her grocery shop and relocate to a small hut. Now, she's being forced to move again. With nowhere to take her goods, she says she has no option but to sell them off cheaply.
What President Xi Jinping said on television sounded really good ... Reforms and opening up the country, she says.
Now, see what's happened? We're no longer allowed to remain in Beijing. I have to find another city, maybe Shanghai or Guangzhou. We can't stay in Beijing any more. I have nowhere else to go.
101 East looks at the mass evictions and demolitions forcing 200,000 Beijing residents from their homes, leaving them to face an uncertain future.

Chancellor Helmut Kohl's speech and German reunification | DW Documentary
Six weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Helmut Kohl went to Dresden. The enthusiastic reception he received there acted as a catalyst for a rapid German reunification. The speech Kohl gave there was the most difficult and probably most important speech of his life.
Peter Limbourg will never forget December 19, 1989. That’s when, as a young television correspondent reporting on the historic events surrounding the fall of the Berlin Wall, he went to Dresden, where the West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl was to meet with the de facto East German leader Hans Modrow to stabilize the situation in the communist state. But shortly after his arrival, it became clear that the thousands of East Germans lining the streets and giving him an enthusiastic welcome were in no mood for lengthy negotiations. They wanted a united Germany —
and as fast as possible. Until then, Kohl had thought it would take at least three or four years to bring the two Germanies together, but this day in Dresden made him realize that everything could go much faster. His spontaneous speech in Dresden turned into a rhetorical tightrope act. He knew he couldn’t disappoint the East Germans nor snub the four Allied Powers, and that Any slip of the tongue would have been immediately interpreted in Paris, London or Moscow” as sign of nationalism. Thirty years later, Limbourg goes back to Dresden and talks to the political leaders of the time and to the citizens of Dresden who, like himself, witnessed that historic moment.

STORYLINE:
Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian on Wednesday accused the island's opposition of ducking responsibility for four decades of human rights abuses, attempting to rally supporters at ceremonies commemorating a 60-year-old massacre.
Chen's condemnation of the opposition Nationalist Party came as Taiwan geared up for a year of frenzied political activity, highlighted by legislative elections in December, and a presidential ballot in March 2008.
He spoke at the 60th anniversary of the 228 incident, a Nationalist-inspired crackdown that remains a key source of acrimony for many of Taiwan's 23 (m) million people.
On February 28, 1947, Chinese Nationalist soldiers beat a local Taiwanese woman for selling contraband cigarettes near the Taipei railway station.
The episode set off rioting throughout the island which Nationalist reinforcements suppressed at the cost of thousands of lives.
Addressing a national television audience and a crowd of mostly elderly supporters at Taipei's Peace Park, Chen said the Nationalists have yet to accept responsibility for the 228 incident.
Administered by a succession of unelected Nationalist governments, martial law began in 1948 and was not lifted until 1987.
If the Nationalists want to reflect on history and earn the trust of the people they should apologise for the 38 year long martial law period, Chen said.
Many supporters of Chen's Democratic Progressive Party are descendants of Taiwanese who came to the island in the 17th and 18th centuries from mainland China, and whose relatives were the principal victims of the 228 incident.
Core Nationalist backers tend to be the offspring of mainlanders who accompanied the late Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek to the island in 1949 after the Nationalists lost power to Mao Zedong's Communists.
A 1992 government report, written when the Nationalists were still in power, was the first official acknowledgment that the party bore some responsibility for the 228 incident.
It said Nationalist troops killed and imprisoned thousands of Taiwanese, including many of the island's elite, on the pretext that they were communists or saboteurs.
On Monday Chen said a recent book based on declassified Nationalist documents proved that Chiang was the principal author of the 228 massacre, and promised to strike his name from an elaborate Taipei memorial to his 30-year stewardship of Taiwan.
Chen's promise followed a number of steps he has taken over the past year to emphasise the divide between local Taiwanese and Taiwanese mainlanders.

Jimmy Kimmel’s son: Rare congenital heart disorder tetralogy of Fallot explained - TomoNews
WASHINGTON — Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel became emotional on Monday after revealing his newborn son was diagnosed with a congenital heart disorder called tetralogy of Fallot. But what exactly is this condition?
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, in a healthy heart, oxygen-poor blood flows into the right atrium and ventricle, through the pulmonary artery and into the lungs to be oxygenated.
The now oxygen-rich blood flows back into the left atrium and ventricle, and is pumped out through the aorta to be circulated into the body.
A heart with tetralogy of Fallot has a hole in the inner wall separating the ventricles, and a narrower pulmonary passageway. This means the heart works harder to pump blood into the lungs, resulting in thicker right ventricle muscles.
Because of the hole in between the ventricles, oxygen-poor blood is allowed to flow directly into the aorta, and the rest of the body. This lack of oxygen causes a bluish tint in the skin, lips and nails.
The exact causes of tetralogy of Fallot remain unknown, and treatment requires surgery. Left untreated, patients are at an increased risk of sudden death, especially in the first three years of life. Many children who have it survive into adulthood but need lifelong medical care to keep them healthy.
Debates over U.S. healthcare has dominated this week’s headlines, as the American Health Care Act passed the House of Representatives. With passage of the House Republican health care bill, there’s a chance people with preexisting conditions such as tetralogy of Fallot will be denied coverage, reports the Washington Post.

STORYLINE
Former US presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, leaders of the American effort to help survivors of the December 26 Asian tsunami, began a tour of affected countries on Saturday.
The two aim to promote reconstruction efforts and will meet those who lost their loved ones and livelihoods.
After arriving on Thailand''s hard-hit Phuket island, Clinton and Bush - father of the current US president - flew by helicopter to Ban Nam Khem, a fishing village where nearly 2,000 people died in the earthquake-triggered tsunami.
Relief workers have supplied US-funded fibreglass boats to fishermen in the village who lost their equipment in the disaster.
The two former presidents also are to lay wreaths at a commemorative wall where the national flags of victims are displayed.
Nearby, forensic experts are still working to identify scores of bodies, almost two months after the disaster.
The bodies of 5,395 people have been recovered in Thailand since the tragedy and 2,991 people are listed as missing.
Overall, more than 169,000 were killed across a wide swath of southern Asia and eastern Africa, and many thousands more remain missing.
On Sunday, Clinton and Bush are to visit the worst-hit region, Aceh province in eastern Indonesia.
It was the first trip to the region by Clinton and Bush since current President George W. Bush asked them to head up the American tsunami relief effort.

Ukraine claims it destroyed Russian vehicles at border
Ukraine says it has destroyed Russian military vehicles in the country’s eastern region, a day after a column was spotted moving across the border.
Ukraine president Petro Poroshenko confirmed the attack on the Russian convoy of armored personnel carriers in a telephone call, saying that a “significant” part of the military convoy has been destroyed. According to a statement on Poroshenko’s website, “Much of this equipment was destroyed by the Ukrainian artillery at night.”
On Thursday night, reporters from the Guardian and Telegraph witnessed a convoy crossing through a gap in a wire demarcation fence on Thursday night, near Severny village on the Ukraine side. The convoy had waited by the side of the road several miles away until it became dark, and then advanced towards the border without turning off headlights. As the column crossed the fence area armed men stood watch.
The convoy included at least 23 vehicles including armored personnel carriers, soft-skinned trucks and fuel trucks. While the APCs had no visible markings the soft-skinned trucks and fuel trucks had black Russian military number plates.
There was no immediate proof if the Ukrainian armed forces targeted the same convoy seen by the Guardian and Telegraph.
The Russians have denied any incursion. President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the reports “fake.”
