Rendsburg High Bridge
Shot during two passages through the Kiel Canal towards the end of April 2019. The Rendsburg High Bridge takes the Hamburg to Copenhagen main line over the Kiel Canal at a height of 42 metres. The line then descends via the Rendsburg Loop to return to ground level and serve Rendsburg station which is only a short distance north of the canal.
Rendsburg´s Train Bridge/ Die Eisenbahnbruecke Von Rendsburg
Last weekend I took this video when my train from Flensburg to Hamburg was in Rendsburg. It is a town in the northern part of Germany, called Schleswig-Holstein. This is between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Hundreds of years ago sailors had to travel around Denmark. That took much more time and was a hard trip in the wild sea. Nowadays, we have the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (North-Baltic Sea-Channel) that links, of course, the Northsea and the Baltic Sea. At the beginning and at the end of the video you will see the bridge that the train has to cross, in the middle the view on Rendsburg and the channel.
The noise is made by the wind because I took this video at the open window.

Rendsburg High Bridge (Rendsburger Hochbrücke)
Located over the Baltic-North Sea Canal (Nord-Ostsee Kanal) in Rendsburg, this bridge is one of the rarest to find globally. The 1913 structure, designed by Friedrich Voss features a cantilever through truss span- carrying a railline connecting Hamburg and Flensburg- on top, a transporter span underneath the truss span-which carries cars, bikes and pedestrians between Rendsburg and Audorf and a north approach span that resembles a loop encircling all Rendsburg, inspired by the Hastings Spiral Bridge in Minnesota, built in 1895. This is a video with a demonstration of how the transporter span works taken from the Rendsburg side of the Canal with commentary by the author.

Spanning the Baltic-North Sea Canal in Rendsburg in Schleswig-Holstein, this bridge is said to be the finest work compiled by Friedrich Voss. Completed in 1913, this bridge features three parts: a cantilever through truss serving rail traffic between Flensburg and Hamburg, a transporter span underneath the truss span that transports cars, cyclists and pedestrians across the canal, and on the north end, a loop approach featuring steel trusses, brick arch spans and a filling that presents a 5° grade. The design is similar to the Hastings Spiral Bridge, built in 1895. This footage was produced in August 2012 when the south approach spans were being refurbished. From the ICE Train, you will see the crossing and the north approach spans.
Rendsburg Hochbrücke 11 June 2018
This Transporter Bridge (Schwebefähre) was built in just 2 years between 1911 and 1913 to carry the Neumünster to Flensburg railway across the canal. Regrettably, since January 2016 when a myopic navigator allowed his ship to collide with the gondola the transporter function has been inactive. The gondola has been removed and remains in store while its future is debated. Given the very small number of surviving Transporter Bridges, it would be a great loss if it wasn’t restored to use.

Germany: A short visit to Rendsburg
Rendsburg is a town on the River Eider and the Kiel Canal in the central part of Schleswig-Holstein.
Rendsburg is situated at the longest river of Schleswig-Holstein, the Eider, and the busiest artificial waterway in the world, the Kiel Canal.
From an urban planning point of view, three main urban areas of importance:
- The old town along the upper and lower Eider with the center at St. Mary's Church, the Old Town Market and the Schiffbrückenplatz.
- The Neustadt, called Neuwerk, which includes the Baroque city expansion south of the Lower Eider, with the central parade ground, the Christian Church (formerly Garrison Church) and the Arsenal.
- The historicizing landscaped streets and new residential areas along the looped Wall- and fortifications; Here one finds barracks, but also civil and administrative buildings of the Wilhelmine era.
