Streets of Yerevan: Republic Square, Blue Mosque,
Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia as well as one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Yerevan is the administrative, cultural, and industrial center of Armenia.
The history of Yerevan dates back to the 8th century BC, with the founding of the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC by king Argishti I at the western extreme of the Ararat plain.
Volcanic tuff was used in the construction of buildings in Yerevan, therefore Yerevan is called the pink city.
On the first day we visited the Blue Mosque, built in 1766 by the local khan of the Erivan Khanate. Currently, the mosque is the cultural center of the Iranian community of Armenia. In addition, we visited Katoghike church of the 13th century.

Republic Square is the large central town square in Yerevan, Armenia. It is intersected by the streets of Abovyan, Nalbandyan, Tigran Mets Avenue, Vazgen Sargsyan and Amiryan. The square was designed by architect Alexander Tamanian within the 1924 main plan of Yerevan city. The construction of the square started in 1926. The first phase of the construction was completed in 1929. It was further developed until 1952 and finally completed in 1958. The square was known as Lenin Square. The statue of the Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin was erected in the southwestern forehead of the square in 1940 and dismantlement in 1990, prior to the independence of Armenia. It is now replaced with a large TV monitor. The oval shaped square has a stone pattern in the centre, meant to look like a traditional Armenian rug from above. The dancing water fountains are located at the northeastern forehead of the square in front of the National Gallery. The buildings around the square are made of rose and white Armenian tufa stones, fortified on a basalt-made ground anchor. The clock of the Government building tower was made in Moscow and transferred to Yerevan in July 1941. The diameter of the clock is 4 meters, the length of the big hand is 188 cm, while the small hand is 170 cm. The Republic Square is the place where ceremonies and meetings are held with the most notable one is the yearly military show of the Independence Day.

During the Soviet period it was called the Lenin Square and a statue of Lenin stood at the square and military parades were held twice (originally thrice) a year. After Armenia's independence Lenin's statue was removed and the square was renamed. It has been described as Armenia's and the city's most important civic space,Yerevan's architectural highlight and the city's most outstanding architectural ensemble. One author suggested that it is certainly one of the finest central squares created anywhere in the world during the 20th century.
The building is home to the Government of Armenia (the council of government ministers and not the entire executive branch). It originally housed the People's Commissariat (the executive of Soviet Armenia). The north-western portion, built in 1926-29, was designed by Alexander Tamanian. The construction of the rest of the building was taken up by Gevorg Tamanian, Alexander's son, in 1938 and finished in 1941.
History Museum of Armenia, National Gallery of Armenia
The buildings began in the 1950s with the National Gallery building being completed in 1977. It was designed by Mark Grigorian and Eduard Sarapian. A small portion of the ensemble, the Arno Babajanyan Concert Hall, dates back to 1916.
It was completed in 1958 according to the design of Mark Grigorian and Eduard Sarapian. The hotel was called Armenia during the Soviet period. A luxury hotel, it is considered the flagship hotel of Armenia. It has 380 rooms.
The building was designed by Samvel Safaryan, Rafael Israelyan, Varazdat Arevshatyan and completed in 1955. The friezes above first-floor windows are incomplete. The building was home to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1996 and 2016.

Among the earliest Christian civilizations, it’s defined by religious sites including the reconstructed Greco-Roman Temple of Garni and 4th-century Etchmiadzin Cathedral, headquarters of the Armenian Church. Another pilgrimage site is Khor Virap Monastery, in the foothills of Mt. Ararat, just across the border with Turkey
