Here goes the full length version of our trip to Gizzy. Lots of time in and around water. Gisborne is a small seaside city with a relaxed way of life, with cool people who love and are very talented at their water sports. Because the main State Highway bypasses this location it is often missed by our foreign visitors, which is a shame because there is so much more to see and do here and all the way up the East Coast of the North Island of NZ. I was only in town for two days to compile this video, however there are still good wine tours, a cool little museum if you're into that type of stuff. But most importantly this location (including the entire East Coast) has a rich heritage of Maori culture that can be sought out if you look hard enough.

Slip and slide at Rere
Rere Rockslide continues to be a hugely popular summer experience as reporter Jack Marshall found after chucking a bodyboard into the back of a Gisborne Herald car and taking the 46km drive to the tourist hotspot . . .
Oodles of water babies have been out in force at Rere Rockslide as its popularity peaks over the summer months.
In the space of three hours yesterday, about 100 people came and went, with each group replaced by a new crowd of spectators and participants keen to take on the 60-metre-long buzz.
While the annual influx of visitors and provision of facilities to accommodate their needs has lessened the untouched, “locals only” feel to the place, it still exudes a rustic charm.
Listed in AA's Top 101 things to do in New Zealand, the site has been awarded a certificate of excellence by TripAdvisor and is promoted as one of the most popular things to do in Gisborne.
Among the Rere first-timers spoken to yesterday was Sid Davies all the way from the United Kingdom.
“It's so cool here. It's much nicer than being in London.”
Almost everyone who talked to The Herald were New Zealanders from out of town. Most locals were there because they had brought visiting friends for a day out.
The only locals without guests that we spoke to were parks and recreation workers doing site maintenance.
The slide's source, Wharekopae River, has not had the best reputation for water quality, however, the Rere community has been working with the council, Ministry for the Environment and Beef + Lamb New Zealand to improve the water quality at Rere Falls and Rockslide.
The water was listed as safe for swimming when last tested on January 7 by Gisborne District Council. Those results were published on the Land, Air, Water Aotearoa website.

Rere Rock Slide Gisborne - New Zealand
About 30 minutes from Gisborne the Rere Rock Slide is a natural waterslide of 60 meters long. Bring a tube, bodyboard or raft and slide down with your friends. For 10 dollar you can buy a small bodyboard in Gisborne at The Warehouse.
Carnage at Rere rockslide Gisborne
8 teams of men build 8 crafts and race them down the natural rockslide to see who has the fastest time. Loads of fun. Slide action starts at 2:08. March 27th 2010.
Rere Falls, Gisborne, New Zealand
Rere Falls, Gisborne, New Zealand. Drive approximately 50km north-west from Gisborne on the Wharekopae Road towards the Eastwoodhill Arboretum and you will reach the small community of Rere. Heading down to the Wharekopae River will bring you to the Rere Falls and the Rere Rock Slide (I should mention that these are two different parts of the river just in case you're wondering if people really slide over the falls). Although they are not very high at just 5 metres, the Rere Falls are very picturesque. About 20 metres in width, it is possible to walk behind the cascading water although as the rock face can be very slippery, care should be taken.
