American Spies Working Overtime: Ambassador Says Russian Diplomats Constantly Being Approached

American intelligence services are trying to recruit Russian diplomats who worked at the consulate in Seattle. This was reported by the Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov.
Secretary of State Kerry arrives at ambassador's residence
US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived at the US ambassador's residence in Paris on Monday afternoon, following a meeting with Arab League representatives in the French capital.
He was welcomed by US Ambassador Charles Rivkin, who earlier on Monday was summoned to the French Foreign Ministry to answer questions about alleged US mass surveillance of French telephone records.
The Le Monde Newspaper published details from documents leaked by the former NSA security analyst Edward Snowden, which allegedly show the agency monitored the phone calls of more than 70 million French citizens over a 30-day period.
The report in Le Monde, co-written by Glenn Greenwald who originally revealed the NSA surveillance program, found that when certain numbers were used, the conversations were automatically recorded.
The surveillance operation also swept up text messages based on key words, Le Monde reported.
The French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius described the claims as unacceptable and demanded an explanation from the United States.
Neither the US embassy nor State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki had immediate comment.
The claims in Le Monde emerged as Kerry arrived in Paris for diplomatic talks about a peace process for Israel and Palestinian authorities.
Kerry travels to London on Tuesday for a meeting with ministers of 10 other nations who back the opposition in Syria, and are trying to hold an international conference in Geneva to set up a transition government and end Syria's civil war.

Russia summons British ambassador as it readies to expel diplomats
Russia's foreign ministry has summoned Britain's ambassador to the country, Laurie Bristow, for a meeting. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday that his country is preparing to expel British diplomats. This is in retaliation to London's decision to expel 23 staff at the Russian embassy over the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy and his daughter. Russia has denied any involvement in the attempted murder. Relations between the two countries have crashed to a post-Cold War low as the dispute over the nerve agent attack has escalated.

I think that people in Russia will suffer a lot because of that. I have known the British Council for many-many years, it is a very good institution which gives good education - language education - to people. So it is really a great pity that these things happen. And we, here at the library, are very sad about it.

STORYLINE:
A politically charged dispute between Moscow and London over a British cultural organisation has intensified after
Russia's top security agency interviewed the group's Russian employees and one of its directors was stopped by law enforcement.
The British Council, which acts as the cultural arm of the British Embassy, said on Wednesday it was deeply concerned by the developments in a confrontation that has poisoned relations between the two countries, already badly strained over the killing in London in 2006 of former Russian security agent Alexander Litvinenko.
It said Russia's actions had prompted the temporary closure of its St. Petersburg office.
Svetlana Gorokhova, a foreign language library employee, who works in the same building as the British Council in Moscow believes that Russian people will suffer due to the closure.
I have known the British Council for many-many years, it is a very good institution which gives good education - language education - to people. So it is really a great pity that these things happen, she told the AP Television as she arrived at work on Thursday.
Despite the outrage in the British media, the Russian press and television showed little coverage of the current dispute. Very few Moscow newspapers on Thursday have devoted their front pages to the current confrontation between Russian and British authorities.
One Moscow resident believed that the tense relations between the two countries would blow over.
This is all politics, you know. It's just that the relations with Britain have became worse and this is the cause. I don't think this is serious, said Vladimir Vasilievich.
On Wednesday British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said that any intimidation or harassment of officials was unacceptable and Britain's Foreign Office said Russia's ambassador to London was summoned for talks with British officials.
A long-simmering dispute over the British Council flared this week after the organisation defied Russian orders to shut its offices in St. Petersburg and the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg. Russia says the offices are operating illegally.
In an angry exchange on Tuesday, Britain's ambassador warned that any action against the British Council would violate international law and Russia's foreign minister accused Britain of colonial-era arrogance.
Kinnock said Russian staffers were being interviewed by police on Wednesday.

Russia: Foreign ambassadors summoned to Foreign Ministry
Ambassadors and envoys of nine countries that expelled Russian diplomats arrived at the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow on Friday, a day after Russia announced it was taking retaliatory measures against the nations.
Ambassadors from Sweden, Moldova, Lithuania, Ukraine, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark and Australia arriving at the ministry.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced on Thursday that the retaliatory measures include an expulsion of the same number of diplomats that the western nations announced earlier.
These actions come following the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury. The UK has blamed Moscow for the incident, while Russia has denied any involvement in the affair.

Live outside the British Embassy in Moscow on Friday, March 23, as the deadline approaches for 23 UK diplomats to leave the country.
The measure, alongside the closure of the British Council in Russia, comes in response to UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s decision to expel 23 Russian diplomats from the UK, claiming that it was highly likely that Russian government was involved in the poisoning of 66-year-old former Russian military intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his 33-year-old daughter Yulia on March 4.

Russian Factory Workers Protest Sanctions at U.S. Envoy’s Residence | The Moscow Times
On July Fourth, 50 workers from the GAZ van maker’s Nizhny Novgorod factory rallied on behalf of their 40,000-strong workforce in front of the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Moscow.
Russian tycoon Oleg Deripaska and his van maker were slapped with U.S. sanctions in April 2018. While a decision on lifting sanctions against the company has been postponed until Nov. 8, workers rallied for sanctions to be removed immediately.
If the sanctions stay in place, the plant that employs 40,000 people work could shut down, the workers said, threatening the livelihoods of the 400,000 people who work for GAZ suppliers, dealers and partners.

DIPLOMATIC FORCE? Ft. Vitaly Churkin, Russian Ambassador to the UN
Be careful what u wish for - that seems to be the new ethos of western diplomacy which, for decades, ostensibly tried to make the world a better place. How long will the West's newfound aversion to risk last, and will it prove beneficial in the drive to find a political solution to the Syrian quagmire? Oksana puts the question to Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin.
