The Rest and Be Thankful, Arrochar to Inverary, Argyllshire
Taking my Legacy GT a run to stretch it's legs after fitting new suspension. I was only cruising while getting used to it. Apologies for moving the sun visor and altering a pretty perfect camera position later in the vid but I hope it still works.
PLEASE NOTE - this was filmed from a hands-free camera in the sunvisor. I had BOTH HANDS on the wheel at all times during recording.

The rest and be thankful, A83, Argyll, Scotland
Short video taken on Sunday 28 November 2010 after very heavy snowfalls the day previous. The video was taken on the long uphill stretch of road called The rest and be thankful which runs through some of the most beautiful and striking mountain scenery to be found in Scotland. The sound track Just around the hill is from the excellent album Trilenium by Sash.

Dance Information
Rest-and-be-Thankful are the words which are located on a stone near the junction of the A83 and the B828, placed there by soldiers who built the original Military road in 1753, which is referred to as the 'Drovers' road'. The original stone fell into ruin and was replaced by a commemorative stone at the same site.
The section is so named as the climb out of Glen Croe is so long and steep at the end that it was traditional to rest at the top, and be thankful that you had got to the highest point. The current road no longer keeps to the floor of Glen Croe but steadily climbs across the southern slopes of The Cobbler, on the north side of the Glen, to the highest point of the pass. The descent to westward Loch Fyne is through Glen Kinglas, and in this section the main road to Dunoon and the Cowal peninsula leaves to the south.
The A83 is a major road in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, running from Tarbet, on the western shore of Loch Lomond, where it splits from the A82, to Campbeltown at the southern end of the Kintyre peninsula.
From Tarbet it proceeds west across the watershed between Loch Lomond and Loch Long to Arrochar near the head of Loch Long. It then goes round the head of the loch, down the western shore for a short distance, before leading westward, up Glen Croe to the Rest-and-be-Thankful viewpoint picnic area, before the pass through the Arrochar Alps from the shore of Loch Long to that of Loch Fyne.
REST AND BE THANKFUL
Glen Croe (Scottish Gaelic: Gleann a' Chrò) is a glen in the heart of the Arrochar Alps surrounded by large and rugged mountains characterised by huge boulders. Glen Croe is located to the North West of Loch Lomond and Loch Long, the latter of which it drains into. At the head of the glen is the pass leading to Glen Kinglas. The A83 road runs the length of the valley, passing the viewpoint known as Rest-and-be-thankful. Glen Croe is situated entirely within the Argyll Forest Park.
The old road through the glen seen in the photograph is part of the Military Road that ran from Dumbarton to Inveraray. This was built in the 1740s under the supervision of Major William Caulfield and a stone inscribed Rest & Be Thankful was erected around 1749, after this section road was completed. From 1949 until 1970 motor racing events, including hill climbs and rally stages took place here

Onboard West Coast Motors Citylink service 926 coach from 11:55 Glasgow to Campbeltown service on the 29/10/2014
Our driver (A...) did a fantastic job manoeuvring the coach through the diversion, the coach is actually harder to drive on the OMR as it is long and not articulated. It took an hour to pass the OMR as a lorry's were getting stuck on the narrow bridge at 11:50.

Little look about at the Rest and be Thankful before heading into Arrocher itself, stunning sunny day (pity it was too windy for safe flight most of the time) but the wee drive and the wee fly cleared the cobwebs, you can also see the Cobbler on the Arrochar Alps lol.. I have walked to the cobbler many times over the years.

Rest and be Thankful.
The Rest and be Thankful Viewpoint can be found in Cowalthe on the Cowal Peninsula, in the Arrochar Alps.
The words “Rest and be thankful” are inscribed on a stone near the junction of the A83 and the B828, this stone was originally placed there by the soldiers who built the original military road in 1753 but the original stone fell into ruin and has since been replaced by a commemorative stone at the same site.
The viewpoint was named “Rest and be thankful” because of the long and arduous climb up to it from Glen Croe. The road up to the viewpoint no longer follows the original route.
Nearby is Loch Restil which is a freshwater loch that lies between Glen Croe and Glen Kinglas in the Argyll Forest Park area of the Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park.
