What Does The Old 7 Mile Railroad Bridge Look Like 100 Years After ?
What does the old 7 mile railroad bridge look like now after 100 years of being built?
The Seven Mile Bridge is a bridge in the Florida Keys, in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It connects Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. Among the longest bridges in existence when it was built, it is part of the Overseas Highway in the Keys, which is part of the 2,369-mile (3,813 km) U.S. Route 1.
There are two bridges in this location. The modern bridge is open to vehicular traffic; the older one only to pedestrians and cyclists. The older bridge, originally known as the Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel-Pacet Channel Bridge, was constructed from 1909 to 1912 under the direction of Henry Flagler and Clarence S. Coe as part of the Florida East Coast Railway's Key West Extension, also known as the Overseas Railroad.
After the railroad was damaged by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, the line was sold to the United States government, which refurbished Seven Mile Bridge for automobile use. Unsupported sections were added in 1935 to widen it for vehicular traffic. Dismantled trackage was recycled, painted white, and used as guardrails. It had a swing span to allow passage of boats in the Moser Channel of the Intracoastal Waterway, near where the bridge crosses Pigeon Key, a small island that held a work camp for Flagler's railroad. Hurricane Donna in 1960 caused further damage.
The current road bridge was constructed from 1978 to 1982.
The vast majority of the original bridge still exists, although the swing span has been removed. The 2.2-mile section to Pigeon Key, used as a fishing pier and long open to motorized vehicles to give access to the key, was closed to motorized traffic in 2008 after the unsupported sections began to sag. In 2014, the Florida Department of Transportation approved a $77 million plan to restore the old bridge. By 2017 the pedestrian section was closed, with extensive repairs predicted to be finished by about late 2021.

Local Government in a Global World: Dave Norris at TEDxLouisianaTechUniversity
Dave Norris was first elected Mayor of West Monroe in 1978. During his years in office the city has experienced steady growth, expansion of low cost, high quality public works services, and sound financial management. West Monroe has an outstanding fire department and the first nationally accredited police department in Louisiana.
During Mayor Norris' years in office the city constructed the West Ouachita Senior Center, one of the largest in the state, the Community Center, and the Ike Hamilton Exposition Center, one of the south's finest facilities for equestrian and livestock events. In addition, the city has expanded its recreational facilities to include Lazarre Park on the beautiful Ouachita River, Kiroli Park, which offers a unique woodland experience in an urban setting, and Restoration Park, a wetlands park developed from an old mined-out gravel pit.
Mayor Norris, a former university economics professor, is involved in civic and professional activities in addition to his work as the chief administrative officer of the city. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Living Well Foundation. He is a member of the Ouachita Council of Governments, and is Chairman of the Monroe/West Monroe Public Trust Finance Authority.

Earth Focus Episode 54 - Saving the Rivers of the American West
Find more Earth Focus content at
The Willamette River has some big problems, but it's also the focus of one of the most creative and ambitious watershed restorations efforts ever undertaken. Earth Focus speaks with Jeremy Monroe about his film Willamette Futures, which documents the effort to restore the watersheds of Oregon's largest river system.
Satirical writer George Wolfe's controversial act of civil disobedience, leading a kayaking expedition down the cemented Los Angeles River, is the focus of Thea Mercouffer's film Rock the Boat. The expedition sought to have EPA declare the river navigable so that it could gain protection under the Clean Water Act. The boating trip down the LA River became a political movement which led to changes in federal policy and opened up public access to a long-neglected waterway.
The Colorado River is the most dammed, and diverted river in the world. It struggles to support thirty million people across the western United States and Mexico and is reaching its limits. James Redford and Mark Decena talk about their film Watershed: Exploring A New Water Ethic for the New West, which looks at how we balance the competing interests of cities, agriculture, recreation, wildlife and indigenous communities with rights to the water.
Produced in collaboration with the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital.

A Levee Runs Through It: Reconnecting the Ouachita River to Its Floodplain
This summer, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and The Nature Conservancy in Louisiana plan to breach a 17-mile levee that surrounds 25 square miles at the Upper Ouachita River National Wildlife Refuge in northeast Louisiana. The project is the largest floodplain reconnection and reforestation in the United States.
As of May 19, extremely high flood waters on the Ouachita River are threatening to cause the levees to fail, which would postpone and alter the partners' plans to reconnect the river to its floodplain.

Lyrics:
On December 25th 2017
The grass will turn blue and the sky will turn green.
And when I walk outside with my fanny pack, which I wear for practical reasons,
I won't feel insecure about it this holiday season.
On Christmas Day I'll climb into an Uber with my guitar
And the driver will say nothing, he will simply drive his car.
He won't ask what style I play, or whether I play rhythm or lead
He will not inform me that he's a producer, but also plays a little bit of keys
I'll answer the phone that day to hear the voice of my mother, who died of liver failure when I was 15. And I will weep as she tells me that she's been given a second chance, that she's entering the program, that she wants to be there for her grandchildren, and that she swears she'll never leave me again.
And as we hang up, I'll pull out a picture of you
And say If the sky has turned green and the sky has turned blue
Then maybe...
Chorus:
I won't be alone for Christmas
You'll come home and we'll be in love again
On December 25th 2017 the insipid pap that makes up the iTunes Top 10 will be uniformly supplanted by just one song: You've Lost that Lovin Feelin by the Righteous Brothers. And why? Because You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling is a fuckin incredible song and it deserves to be numbers 1-10. And we will play it on repeat and we will exclaim My god, we HAVE lost that lovin feelin! We have given in to our worst instincts, and that lovin feelin is fuckin gone gone gone. And as the song reaches its climax, we will fall to our knees and wail along with Bobby Hatfield as he sings PLEEEEASE Bring it on back! Bring it on back! Bring it on back!
Chorus:
I won't be alone for Christmas
You'll come home and we'll be in love again
Oh promise me I won't be alone for Christmas
You'll come and we'll be in love
December 25th 2017 will be remembered, at least in part, for a press conference held by Justin Bieber, in which directly addresses his parents, his management, and his fans. And he will say I was just a dumb kid who wanted to sing Usher songs on YouTube, but you turned me into a prize animal. You robbed me of my childhood, you robbed me of my humanity, and when I look in the mirror now I can hardly even recognize my own face anymore, all I see is this fucking Golden Calf.
And President Donald Trump, glued to his TV, will recognize his ascension as the nadir of the Cult of Personality societal dynamic addressed in that press conference. And he will not tweet his response, but rather, will go door to door to every house in America and he will say I'm sorry. I've been wrong about a lot of things. My character defects were constructed in order to keep me safe from feelings of fear, loneliness, and insecurity that have haunted me for my entire life. I promise to be a better person. Moreover, I promise to be a better president. And afterwards he will not tweet about how well received this effort was, but rather, he will go home to his wife and he'll say, I have been selfish and I have been cruel, but I promise to learn to love you. Merry Christmas, Melania. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas everybody! Merry Christmas to the entire United States of America.
Merry Christmas to the whole world.
Merry Christmas to those less fortunate than I am.
Merry Christmas to those more fortunate than I am.
Merry Christmas to my neuroses and my compulsions and my fears.
Merry Christmas to everyone who perpetuated that fucking Lesser of two evils narrative.
Merry Christmas Lin Manuel Miranda
Merry Christmas to this woman named Emily who worked at the check in desk of my middle school. I was in love with her as a child and I still wonder what she’s up to to this day.
Merry Christmas to the ghost of Kurt Cobain. Merry Christmas to the ghost of Whitney Houston. Merry Christmas to the Ghosts of Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe, and anyone else we’ve ever loved and worshipped and idolized and destroyed.
I won't be alone alone. I won't be alone alone. We'll all be alone together. So let's be alone together this Christmas.

Talimena National Scenic Byway - AR-88 / OK-1 - Arkansas / Oklahoma | Drive America's Highways ????
???? Join us as we drive 53 miles along the scenic Talimena National Scenic Byway -- including all the vistas -- in Arkansas and Oklahoma.
In partnership with Stichn Travel, we start the video turning north onto Arkansas Highway 88 from U.S. Highway 71 in Mena, Arkansas. Continuing generally northwest, we enter the Ouachita National Forest as the road ascends to the top of the ridgeline and approaches Queen Wilhelmina State Park -- just past Rich Mountain.
Continuing west, we soon cross over the Oklahoma border where the route becomes Oklahoma Highway 1. All along this road, we are stopping at the scenic vistas (listen for the driver commentary) which offer stunning views of the surrounding area and the gorgeous views of the Ouachita Mountains.
After a long relatively straight stretch of westward travel, we soon come to one of the curvier sections of the route and the only major junction along the trail -- with U.S. Highway 259. If you are traveling with someone who is scared of heights or you otherwise need a quick way off for gas or whatever, this is the ONLY place along the way to do so. There is a campground a few miles later (it's in the video) with outhouses, but do you really want your wife to use that?
Moving right along, we resume a northwesterly drive across the ridge line before making our final descent to U.S. Highway 271 where the video ends. There are visitors centers on both sides of the trail, although the one on the Arkansas side holds weird hours.
We would like to thank our friends at Stichn Travel (stitchntravel.com) for shooting this video for us. While we do have a video of this route in our archives, it is very old and is a timelapse recorded from a cell phone -- this is much better. When you are done watching our videos here at Interstate 411, check them out -- they have a great site and promise more great content in the coming weeks.

Louisiana Veterans Back Home | October 2018 | Public Square
What are the programs and initiatives helping our veterans successfully transition to civilian life?
Since 2001, 2.6 million service men and women have been deployed to support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Twenty-six percent of Louisiana’s veterans fought in these conflicts. The needs for these veterans are plentiful including securing employment and housing, and dealing with the mental rigors of transitioning from military back to civilian life.
Louisiana Public Square explores the unique programs and initiatives that are helping our state’s younger veterans successfully overcome these challenges on “Louisiana Veterans Back Home” Wednesday, October 24 at 7 p.m. on LPB and in New Orleans on WLAE.
Veterans Coming Home is a collaborative, multi-platform public media project between Wisconsin Public Television and Kindling Group in partnership with local stations and other national organizations. Veterans Coming Home is made possible with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
