History of Polka Music | The Origin of Polka Music
Excerpts from the Public Television documentary, Polka! We love polka music!
The polka is originally a Czech dance and genre of dance music familiar throughout Europe and the Americas. It originated in the middle of the 19th century in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic.
Polka remains a popular folk music genre in many European countries, and is performed by folk artists in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia, Switzerland, and to a lesser extent in Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Hungary, Italy, Ukraine, Romania, Belarus, Russia, and Slovakia.
Local varieties of this dance are also found in the Nordic countries, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Latin America and the United States.
The beginning of the propagation of dance and accompanying music called polka is generally attributed to a young woman, Anna Slezáková (born Anna Chadimová), who danced to accompany a local folk song called Strýček Nimra koupil šimla, or Uncle Nimra Bought a White Horse, in 1834.
She is said to have called the dance Maděra, because of its liveliness. The dance was further propagated by the music teacher Josef Neruda, who witnessed Anna dance in an unusual way, put the tune to paper, and taught other young men to dance it.
By 1835, this dance had spread to the ballrooms of Prague. From there, it spread to Vienna by 1839,[5] and in 1840 was introduced in Paris by Raab, a Prague dance instructor.
It was so well received by both dancers and dance masters in Paris that its popularity was referred to as polkamania. The dance soon spread to London and was introduced to America in 1844. It remained a popular ballroom dance until the late 19th century, when it would give way to the two-step and new ragtime dances.
Polka dancing enjoyed a resurgence in popularity after World War II, when many Polish refugees moved to the US, adopting this Bohemian style as a cultural dance.
Polka dances are still held on a weekly basis across many parts of the US with significant populations of central European origin. It was also found in parts of South America.
There are various styles of contemporary polka besides the original Czech dance, which is still the chief dance at any formal or countryside ball in the Czech Republic.
One of the types found in the United States is the North American Polish-style polka, which has roots in Chicago, with large Czech and Polish minorities; two sub-styles are The Chicago Honky (using clarinet and one trumpet) and Chicago Push featuring the accordion, Chemnitzer & Star concertinas, upright bass or bass guitar, drums, and (almost always) two trumpets.
North American Slovenian-style polka is fast and features piano accordion, chromatic accordion, and/or diatonic button box accordion; it is associated with Cleveland.
North American Dutchmen-style features an oom-pah sound often with a tuba & banjo, and has roots in the American Midwest. Conjunto-style polkas have roots in northern Mexico and Texas, and are also called Norteño.
Traditional dances from this region reflect the influence of polka-dancing European immigrants. In the 1980s and 1990s, several American bands began to combine polka with various rock styles (sometimes referred to as punk polka), alternative polka, or San Francisco-style.
It is said that Polka Music Transcends Time!

Drinking the Devil's Acre is a must read for everyone fond of cocktails or San Francisco, for either the amateur or professional mixologist who will discover McDonnell's Bartender’s Secret Formulas, the tales of the legendary Pisco Punch, the ingenious Mai Tai, the Gold Rush era Sazerac and the whimsical Lemon Drop. Understanding and Evaluating Technology
Google Tech Talks
November 15, 2006
ABSTRACT
What is it about technology that does not change? What persistent patterns can we learn—can society at large learn—in order to understand and evaluate the technologies underlying our important personal, political, social, and economic decisions?
The author of Technology Challenged and director of nonprofit corporation KnowledgeContext, Miguel F. Aznar, will share stories about Hawaiian bobtail squid, North Korean radios, and nanotechnology to illustrate a strategy for understanding and evaluating any technology. This strategy is the seed for a technological literacy curriculum that KnowledgeContext has been offering in a grassroots attempt to...
Nicholas Christakis on the Evolutionary Origins of Ethics, Morality, and a Good Society
Subscribe to Hidden Forces and gain access to the episode overtime, transcript, and show rundown here:
In Episode 82 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Dr. Nicholas Christakis about the evolutionary origins of ethics, morality, and a good society.
A renowned sociologist and physician, Dr. Christakis was named to Time Magazine’s 2009 list of the 100 most influential people in the world. He is known for his research on social networks and on the socioeconomic, biosocial, and evolutionary determinants of behavior, health, and longevity. He directs the Human Nature Lab and is the Co-Director of the Yale Institute for Network Science, as well as the Sterling Professor of Social and Natural Science at Yale University.
Listeners to this show will recall our prior episode with social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, where we discussed a 2015 incident at Yale, involving Dr. Christakis, who was accosted and berated by a horde of belligerent students for approximately two hours over the contents of an email sent by his wife, an esteemed childhood educator, in what was one of the earliest examples of a bizarre phenomenon of public shaming and moral outrage that has overtaken college campuses in recent years.
Though Demetri and Nicholas do discuss that experience, as well as this larger move to moderate or in some cases, shut down speech entirely, the episode focuses on the professor’s book, which is an exploration of the evolutionary origins of a good society. Their conversation explores the biological foundations of culture-making and the features that define the social landscape that we have evolved to create. Dr. Christakis highlights some of the profound similarities that can be seen, not just cross-culturally, but across time and space. He shares research into what is known about some of the earliest groups of hunter-gatherers, impromptu societies formed by the survivors of shipwrecks, as well as the deliberately constructed communes of 19th-century transcendentalists.
Nicholas Christakis also explains the biological origins of romantic love, examines polyamorous cultures like those of the Na people of the Himalayas, and compares human societies with those of chimpanzees, elephants, and whales.
This is an episode full of fascinating stories, statistics, and scientific research that weave together insights from the fields of evolutionary psychology, moral philosophy, and genetics. It is a conversation that cuts right to the heart of society’s resurgent interest in human origins, social norms, and moral values.

Symposia: Density: Through Thick and Thin, Los Angeles
Presented March 30, 2017 in Slocum Hall.
The Syracuse Architecture undergraduate program presents the third installment of “Density: Through Thick and Thin,” a 3-part series of discussions on re-surging issues about urban density in the 21st century.
An interdisciplinary symposium to explore density in Los Angeles, and its urban future in face of rising challenges and identity politics.
What kind of city should Los Angeles become?
The question strikes at the heart of challenging and polarizing issues Angelenos struggle with as their city faces the effects of rapid growth and rapid urban transformation. Perhaps no issue defines the challenges faced by Los Angles, and indeed cities across North America, more than housing: Should there be more or less public housing? More or less market rate development? What should be the mix of public and private housing? And should new housing, whether public or market rate, be more or less dense?
As we face pressures of global population explosion, measurable and alarming ecological stress and related urbanization, the symposia offer an arena to discuss the current and near future status of the fundamental quality of built environments. Join us as we focus on discourse occurring in LA and a larger discussion about the various modes of urban density and their relation to environmental, economic, social, cultural and political quality.

Cultural Integrity & Local Music: Cape Breton Fiddle, New Orleans Funk
Burt Feintuch discusses how two seemingly very different places, Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and New Orleans, Louisiana, turn out to have much in common. In both, there is broad recognition that something special is going on culturally; something that has produced noteworthy musical distinctiveness. Both are creative hotspots, places where people are lucky enough to be able to dance to their own music. People in both communities care deeply about their music and also worry about its sustainability. Based on Feintuch's fieldwork, this talk develops the idea of cultural integrity and explores local desires and anxieties about the role distinctive local music plays in a good and satisfying life.
Speaker Biography: Burt Feintuch is a folklorist at the University of New Hampshire, where he directs the Center for the Humanities. A former editor of the Journal of American Folklore and a member of the National Recording Preservation Board, he has done field research in traditional music communities in the U.K., Canada and the U.S.

Newcastle Brown Ale is a brown ale, originally produced in Newcastle Upon Tyne but now brewed by Heineken at the John Smith's Brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire.
Launched in 1927 by Colonel Jim Porter after three years of development, the merger of Newcastle Breweries with Scottish Brewers afforded the beer national distribution and United Kingdom sales peaked in the early 1970s.[2] The brand underwent a resurgence in the late 1980s and early 1990s with a cult revival in student unions.[2] By the late 1990s, the beer was the most widely distributed alcoholic product in the UK. By the 2000s, the majority of sales were in the United States, although it still sells 100 million bottles annually in the UK.[3][4] In 2005, brewing moved from Newcastle upon Tyne to Dunston, Tyne and Wear, and in 2010 to Tadcaster, North Yorkshire.

John V. Beamer, U.S. Representative from Indiana

Edward L.R. Elson, Presbyterian minister and Chaplain of the United States Senate
Richard Russell, Jr., American politician from Georgia
Richard Brevard Russell, Jr. (November 2, 1897 -- January 21, 1971) was an American politician from Georgia. A member of the Democratic Party, he briefly served as Governor of Georgia (1931--33) before serving in the United States Senate for almost 40 years, from 1933 until his death in 1971. As a Senator, he was a candidate for President of the United States in the 1952 Democratic National Convention, coming in second to Adlai Stevenson.
Russell was a founder and leader of the conservative coalition that dominated Congress from 1937 to 1963, and at his death was the most senior member of the Senate. He was for decades a leader of Southern opposition to the civil rights movement.
Russell competed in the 1952 Democratic presidential primary, but was shut-out of serious consideration by northern Democratic leaders who saw his support for segregation as untenable outside of the Jim Crow South. When Lyndon Johnson arrived in the Senate, he sought guidance from knowledgeable senate aide Bobby Baker, who advised that all senators were equal but Russell was the most equal—meaning the most powerful. Johnson assiduously cultivated Russell through all of their joint Senate years and beyond. Russell's support for first-term senator Lyndon Johnson paved the way for Johnson to become Senate Majority Leader. Russell often dined at Johnson's house during their Senate days. However, their 20-year friendship came to an end during Johnson's presidency, in a fight over the Chief Justice nomination of Johnson's friend and Supreme Court justice Abe Fortas in 1968.
While a prime mentor of Johnson, Russell and the then-president Johnson also disagreed over civil rights. Russell, a segregationist, had repeatedly blocked and defeated civil rights legislation via use of the filibuster and had co-authored the Southern Manifesto in opposition to civil rights. He had not supported the States Rights' Democratic Party of Strom Thurmond in 1948, but he opposed civil rights laws as unconstitutional and unwise. (Unlike Theodore Bilbo, Cotton Ed Smith and James Eastland, who had reputations as ruthless, tough-talking, heavy-handed race baiters, he never justified hatred or acts of violence to defend segregation. But he strongly defended white supremacy and apparently did not question it or ever apologize for his segregationist views, votes and speeches.) Russell was key, for decades, in blocking meaningful civil rights legislation that might have protected African-Americans from lynching, disenfranchisement, and disparate treatment under the law. After Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Russell (along with more than a dozen other southern Senators, including Herman Talmadge and Russell Long) boycotted the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City.
A prominent supporter of a strong national defense, Russell became in the 1950s the most knowledgeable and powerful congressional leader in this area. He used his powers as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 1951 to 1969 and then as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee as an institutional base to add defense installations and jobs for Georgia. He was dubious about the Vietnam War, privately warning President Johnson repeatedly against deeper involvement.
