HIKING AT RETEZAT NATIONAL PARK : TRANSYLVANIA ROAD TRIP PART 9 | ROMANIA
HIKING AT RETEZAT NATIONAL PARK : TRANSYLVANIA ROAD TRIP PART 9 | ROMANIA
We are now venturing to explore the Retezat National Park. It took us a couple of hours driving from Sarmizegetusa to reach the parking area to start the hiking at the Retezat Mountains. It is quite an adventure. The scenery while doing the trekking is amazing!! We saw 2 camping sites before reaching the Bucura Lake plus the campsite at the Bucura Lake itself. There are quite a few campers. The entire national park is extremely clean! Also, it is where one of the beautiful glacier lakes in Romania is located. The nature of Romania's Retezat National Park is exceptional!! It is part of the Carphatian Mountains and is located in Hunedoara County. We truly recommend to visit the national park for camping, trekking or just by sight seeing!!

Summer 2017 Part 1: Hiking the Romanian Carpathians - The Retezat and Tulisa Mountains
During the summer of 2017, I spent six weeks hiking and wild camping my way across lots of different mountain ranges throughout the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
Countries I visited included Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia. I carried minimal equipment. Without food and water, my bag weighed just over 5kg’s, including a tent and cooking kit.
In between each walk, I enjoyed some hitchhiking, sightseeing, and other budget travel opportunities whilst resting and resupplying in towns.
I spent the first few weeks of my journey crossing the main portion of the Carpathian Mountains in Romania, from west to east. I then travelled to Sofia in Bulgaria and hiked the E4 trail over the Rila and Pirin mountains into northern Greece. After that, I crossed the Sar Mountains from Macedonia into Kosovo.
My final hike took me through the Accursed Mountains of Albania and down into Montenegro, where I finally stopped walking to enjoy some of the lovely beaches on the Adriatic Coast, before eventually flying home from Dubrovnik in Croatia.
This video shows the first hike of my journey, across the Retezat and Tulisa Mountains in Romania, as well as my visits to Cluj Napoca and Petrosani.
Everything was hastily filmed on a smartphone with a very shaky hand and a regretful ignorance of any kind of camera technique or directorial vision!
A big thank you goes out to all of those who helped me in the planning of my trip by answering my endless questions about route information and bears, etc. You know who you are!
This video features the songs 'Bask' and 'Clade' by Edamame:

Retezat Mountains - Lacul Bucura, Romania
My trip in Retezat Mountains, Romania 2008, a wonderful place. Retezat Mountains are some of the most beautiful in the Carpathians and include Romania's first national park.
A special place !

Hiking Retezat Mountains, Romania
Munții RETEZAT Mountains, LACUL BUCURA - POIANA PELEGII Tourist Mountain Trail (Romania)
Bucura (Enjoy) Lake is paramount landmark located towards the northern ridge of Retezat Mountains, place of intersection of several hiking trails. Poiana Pelegii (Pelegii Glade), located in the central zone of massif, on the right side (north) of the Lapusnicul Mare valley, is the terminus point which can be reached by car.
Bucura Lake is the largest glacial lake in Romania. The lake is situated at the base of Peleaga Peak, at an altitude of 2,040 meters. The lake is 550 m long, 160m average width and maximum depth of 15.5 m. The lake is fed by five main springs and in turn discharged through a single emissary in Lia Lake (1908 m), well visible at the beginning of the descent. Lia Lake collects waters of three other small glacial lakes, invisible in our route: Florica Lake (2090 m), Viorica Lake (2070 m) and Lake Ana (1979 m).
The tourist trail that linking Bucura Lake and Poiana Pelegii is well marked (on trees, rocks, poles) with blue tape and is located in the left side (east) of the Bucura Valley. The route has a difference of 460 m, it takes about an hour (conversely, the climb takes about 2 hours) and requires no special mountaineer skills although the slope is quite large. The movement is done mainly on stone and is required to be properly equipped.
For starters we are in the alpin bare zone and we can recognize the effects of the glacial phenomena, and see Lia Lake to the right. In the middle part of the route we go through a spectacular forest of juniper (juniper) and crossed by several torrents of water. In the bottom of the route we go through a forest of spruces. Under Poiana Pelegii, at 1580 m, Bucura Creek enters in the Lapusnicul Mare Stream, and that once we cross it, we reached the end of the forestry road.

Take a Step Back in Time: Hiking through Villages in Transylvania
Hiking through a landscape in Transylvania, Romania, with villages is like going back in time. Join me on this hike in Romania. Some surprises along the way and some scary stuff I guess.
Retezat Montain, winter time, drone view
One of the highest massifs in all of Romania, the Retezat Mountains are part of the Southern Carpathian Mountains. Translating to “cut-off” in Romanian, the highest peak is Peleaga stretching 2,509 meters or 8,232 feet. The area is also home to Retezat National Park, the first national park in Romania.

SARMIZEGETUSA (Roman Capital) : TRANSYLVANIA ROAD TRIP PART 8 | ROMANIA
The third site visit of the day is the Roman capital in Transylvania, Romania called SARMIZEGETUSA. It is simply the ruins of the capital. It is a shame that you can no longer see some of the structure of it. All that is left are the stones. Its a good thing that they put a label or a brief history on what was built on a specific site. Apparently, there is another part of Sarmizegetusa which where the Dacian capital. We were not able to visit it. Hopefully, we can next time. It is a good site to visit specially if you are into history and archeology. Watch out for next part of the road trip, the Retezat Mountains...

Trekking Retezat peak 2482 m from Rausor, Romania
/ENG/ The Retezat Mountains (Romanian: Munţii Retezat) are one of the highest massifs in Romania, being part of the Southern Carpathians. The highest peak is Peleaga (Vârful Peleaga), at an altitude of 2,509 metres (8,232 ft). Other important peaks are Păpuşa (Vârful Păpuşa, the Doll Peak) and Retezat Peak (Vârful Retezat). /SRB/ Retezat Nacionalni park (rum. Ovu planinu zovu još i zemljom plavih očiju.
