Rethymno, Crete: Beach, Old Town & Fortress | Rethymnon | Ρέθυμνο
In this video the travel turtles visit Rethymno, in Crete, Greece. We give a brief tour of the beach, old town and fortress. This is also known as Retyhmnon and is a city on the north coast of this Greek island. The harbour is filled with fishing boats and tavernas and also features a lighthouse built in the 1830's. The fortress (Fortezza) is also featured in this video and was built by the Venetians in the 16th century and captured by the Ottomans in 1646.
We flew here for a 10 day holiday from England and also visited other areas on Crete which you may see in our other videos.

This Medieval settlement is great for strolling around and shopping, as its paved paths are lined up with all kind of shops: from stores with clothes and shoes to jewelries, souvenir shops and art galleries. Shops in Rethymno Town stay open until late at night and create a charming atmosphere in the evenings.
Crete, Greece's largest island, is known for its varied terrain, which ranges from fine-sand beaches at Elafonisi to the White Mountains. Mt. Ida, the tallest of the range, is home to the Ideon Cave, which was the birthplace of Zeus, according to Greek mythology. The capital, Heraklion, is home to the renowned Heraklion Archaeological Museum, housing Minoan artifacts, and Knossos, a Bronze Age settlement.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

The city of Rethymnon (Ρέθυμνο) is the capital of the Prefecture with the same name on the island of Crete. Rethymnon has an old center with Venetian, Greek and Ottoman influences. The sandy beach is 20 km long. Rethymnon has 20,000 residents. The city has a castle (also known as the Fortezza), a Loggia, a lighthouse and a Venetian harbour.
