Great Yarmouth Visit
Great Yarmouth, often known to locals as Yarmouth, is a coastal town in Norfolk, England. It is located at the mouth of the River Yare, 20 miles (30 km) east of Norwich.
The town has been a seaside resort since 1760, and is the gateway from the Norfolk Broads to the North Sea. For hundreds of years it was a major fishing port, depending mainly on the herring fishery, but its fishing industry suffered a steep decline in the second half of the 20th century, and has now all but disappeared. The discovery of oil in the North Sea in the 1960s led to a flourishing oil rig supply industry, and today it services offshore natural gas rigs. More recently, the development of renewable energy sources, especially offshore wind power, has created further opportunities for support services. A wind farm of 30 generators is within sight of the town on the Scroby Sands.
Play – sports of all sorts in Great Yarmouth
Great Yarmouth is blessed with all sorts of sporting action, whether you want to watch or to play.
Dinghy and yacht racing takes place on the Broads at Rollesby and Filby as well as in the sea off Gorleston with racing most Sundays, the board walk and esplanade are both great viewing spots for spectators. Spectators are also welcome to take their places in the centre court grandstand at the annual beach volleyball competition in June, it’s top-class beach volleyball played out right under your nose.
If you’d rather get in on the action, get your skates on at the indoor roller-skating rink, beat the other team at quasar laser, tee off at one of several seaside golf courses along the Greater Yarmouth coastline, or challenge the kids to an adventured themed 18 hole course. For something a little less energetic but no less exacting, enter the UK’s largest outdoor bowling championship in August, or just play a few woods at the Britannia Bowling Greens.
Round off your day with an evening of sport watching thrilling stock car or greyhound racing from the comfort of the restaurant, high above the racetrack.

THE WINTER GARDENS come see inside this amazing building
First built in Torquay in 1878, a failed business venture, it was bought by Great Yarmouth Borough Council, dismantled and shipped around the coast to be re-erected on Yarmouth’s Golden Mile in 1903. The logic being that failure on the sophisticated English Riviera wouldn’t necessarily result in failure in an archetypical working-class seaside town, sat on the North Sea coast. That and the building was going cheap too.
A landmark structure gleaming and brilliant in the hot Norfolk summers and complimenting huge East Anglian skies. At night the building was flooded with an electric light which beamed out across the seafront and reflected back on the sea. As radical and unnerving as the new moving picture houses springing along the parade.
A wasted heritage asset, an iconic seafront building, in need of substantial repair and above all an appropriate and viable new use.
This was an awesome place
