Revi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum is a privately owned museum located at Alappuzha, Kerala, India that displays decorative art and artifacts, including a large private collection of Swarovski crystals and ivory.
Revi Karunakaran was the architect of the modernized coir industry of Kerala. After Revi's death in 2003, his wife Betty Karan built this museum in his memory. The objects displayed at this museum were collected by his family over three generations and feature unique artistic pieces from across the world.
In 2003, Betty Karan built Revi Karuna Karan memorial museum at Alappuzha in memory of her husband. This is now a renowned, privately owned museum holding one of the largest private collections of Swarovski crystals in the world along with porcelain, jade, ivory, Keralan artifacts, furniture, and Tanjore paintings.
The family of Karunakarans have been avid collectors of fine art and artefacts since at least three generations.[5] The collection was originally maintained strictly within their private domain. However, after Revi’s demise, Betty decided to open the collection to the public, as a befitting tribute to the memory of their most beloved husband and loving father. Lalichan Zachariah, an architect from Ernakulam, helped Betty design the museum. The museum was inaugurated on 22 November 2006 by the former governor of Meghalaya, Sri. M.M. Jacob.
Built over a period of about three years, the RKK museum is noted for its architectural characteristics such as the frontal Greco-Roman columns and occupies an area of 28,000 sq ft.[A unique feature of the museum is that visitors can see and experience the four major religions of India — Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Christianity — that are represented with equal prominence across the murals, ivory collection, Kerala room and other items on display.
The 3rd phase of the museum was inaugurated on 22 November 2015 by Her Excellency Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, the fifth President of Sri Lanka. Most of the pieces displayed in the museum come with a certificate of authentication, personally certified by Betty.
Many, including former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, have figuratively compared this museum to the Taj Mahal, as both were built in the same spirit as a symbol and memorial of spousal love

Revi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum, Alappuzha
It is a rarity in India that collections of artistic and also of antique value become objects of appreciation and wonder for the public. In Alappuzha District of Kerala, also known as the 'Venice of the East', a remarkable personality dedicated a great deal of time, money and energy for the growth and development of the coir industry. Mr. Revi Karuna Karan till his passing away, played a pivotal role towards the betterment of the coir industry.
While Mr. Revi carried on with his passionate and dedicated efforts for the development of the coir industry and for the welfare of those making a living out of it, he also found time to scan the world of fine arts. An avid collector of wonderful works of art; with and without utility, Mr. Revi eventually became the custodian of many fabulous works of art from around the world. A true connoisseur of art, after his passing away, Mr. Revi's family opened a museum in his name to house some of the selected items from his impressive collection.
Revi Karuna Karan Museum (Telecasted on National TV)
All of us have heard tales of timeless love. In India we have one of its finest examples-—the Taj Mahal. Taj is the most famous monument to love ever built. It was created by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1653 in memory of his favorite wife Mumtaz. In 2003, Betty Karan built Revi Karuna Karan memorial museum at Alappuzha in memory of her loving husband.
Alappuzha also known as Alleppey, is a town in Kerala state of southern India. A town with picturesque landscape, it was once a major port and trading centre of Kerala. It was known as the Venice of the East. Even though, Alappuzha has lost its commercial prominence, it still retains its beauty and attracts thousands of tourists from within the country and all around the world. The canals, beaches, backwaters, boat races, and houseboats of Alappuzha are stunningly beautiful and captivate the visitors. A recent addition to this list of attractions is the Revi Karuna Karan memorial museum.
The family was avid collectors of fine art and artefacts for over three generations. The collection was maintained in private domain. After Revi's demise, Betty decided to open the collection to the public. Betty and Lullu have dedicated the museum in the memory of a most beloved husband and loving father. The museum was inaugurated on the 22nd November 2006 by the former Meghalaya governor, Sri. M.M. Jacob.
The RKK museum is an architectural marvel. There is a lush green lawn with a large kidney shaped pond on one side. The pond has several exotic varieties of water lilies. On the other side of the lawn, there is a beautiful gazebo with six statues made of Italian marble supporting a cast iron roof and marble slabs underneath for sitting. The front curved portion of the roof is supported by six massive Greco-Roman architectural pillars with a wide veranda underneath. Beyond the veranda the entrance of the building also has a curved tinted glass frontage. The museum, which has an area of 28,000 SQFT, took about three years to complete.
One unique feature of the museum is that you will see that the four major religions in India—Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism—have equal prominence on the mural, ivory collection, Kerala room and the items displayed in the old wing.

This museum is an effort of Mrs. Raji Punnoose- the curator and proprietress of the museum. This retired school teacher carries with her oodles of passion which is visible when she explains the beauty and the story behind each exhibit. The fact that she has been chasing her dream for almost 2 decades now makes this Iron Lady stand out. The fact that she put in almost 3 decades of dedication and effort to assimilate this wealth of natures creations is incomparable and unmatched. Established in 2001 this is a story of perseverance and unstinting creativity which has no parlance.
She went around painstakingly with her third eye and recovered these rare objects from the Andaman seas at great risk over a span of 25 years. These absolutely unique and rare collection of artifacts, created and sustained by the sea waves for millennia, weighing many tons, big and small, collected, improvised, worth millions in international market, are permanently exhibited at the Bay Island Driftwood Museum, Kumarakom.
Winner of many awards she came up with this amazing concept of this wonderful museum. She brought these objects weighing many tons and has spent a large part of her savings on them. This is probably one of the few private museums in the world which is run by a registered Trust. Internationally acclaimed but yet lesser known destination, this is a must visit for all on a visit to Kumarakom.
