Aberystwyth is a historic market town, administrative centre, and holiday resort within Ceredigion, West Wales, often colloquially known as Aber. Aberystwyth is located near the confluence of the rivers Ystwyth and Rheidol.
Historically part of Cardiganshire, since the late 19th century, Aberystwyth has also been a major Welsh educational centre, with the establishment of a university college there in 1872. Aberystwyth has a pier and a seafront which stretches from Constitution Hill, at the north end of the Promenade, to the mouth of the harbour at the south, taking in two separate beach stretches divided by the castle. Today, it essentially comprises a number of different areas: Aberystwyth town, Llanbadarn Fawr, Waunfawr, Llanbadarn, Trefechan, Penparcau (the most populous).
Aberystwyth is an isolated town, considering the population density of the United Kingdom. The nearest substantial settlements are located at least 1 hour 45 minutes' drive away: Swansea, to the south, is 70 miles (110 km) away; Shrewsbury, in Shropshire, England, to the east, is 75 miles (120 km) away; and Wrexham, to the north-east, is approximately 80 miles (130 km) away. The Welsh capital, Cardiff, is over 100 miles (160 km) away. London is 210 miles (340 km) distant from Aberystwyth.
Aberystwyth is a tourist destination, and forms a cultural link between North Wales and South Wales. Constitution Hill, scaled by the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway, gives access to panoramic views and to other attractions at the summit, including a camera obscura. Scenic Mid Wales landscape within easy reach of the town includes the wilderness of the Cambrian Mountains, whose valleys contain forests and meadows which have changed little in centuries. A convenient way to access the interior is by the preserved narrow-gauge Vale of Rheidol Railway. Although the town is relatively modern, there are a number of historic buildings, including the remains of the castle and the Old College of Aberystwyth University nearby. The Old College was originally built and opened in 1865 as a hotel, but after the owner's bankruptcy the shell of the building was sold to the university in 1867.
The new university campus overlooks Aberystwyth from Penglais Hill to the east of the town centre. The station, a terminus of the main railway, was built in 1924 in the typical style of the period, mainly in a mix of Gothic, Classical Revival, and Victorian architecture. The town is the unofficial capital of Mid Wales, and several institutions have regional or national offices there. Public bodies located in the town include the National Library of Wales, which incorporates the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales, one of six British regional film archives. The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales maintains and curates the National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW), providing the public with information about the built heritage of Wales. Aberystwyth is also the home to the national offices of UCAC and Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (Welsh Language Society), and the site of the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research. The Welsh Books Council and the offices of the standard historical dictionary of Welsh, Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru, are also located in the town.

Knutsford is a town in Cheshire, England, 14 miles south-west of Manchester and 9 miles north-west of Macclesfield. Located near Cheshire's Golden Triangle and on the Cheshire Plain between the Peak District to the east and the Welsh mountains to the west, Knutsford and its surrounding villages are affluent and sought-after residential areas, with properties rated as some of the most expensive outside of London. Knutsford is a dormitory town for people working in Manchester and Liverpool. Residents include actress Barbara Knox and comedienne Sarah Millican; it is an area particularly popular among footballers, being home to Peter Crouch, Sam Ricketts, Michael Jacobs and Phil Jagielka.
Knutsford's main town centre streets, Princess Street (also known locally as Top Street) and King Street lower down (also known as Bottom Street), form the hub of the town. At one end of the narrow King Street is an entrance to Tatton Park. The Tatton estate was home to the Egerton family, and has given its name to Tatton parliamentary constituency, which includes the neighbouring communities of Alderley Edge and Wilmslow.
Knutsford has excellent access to the motorway network, with junctions to the M6 (Junction 19) and M56 (Junction 7) motorways. Knutsford is served by Knutsford railway station which is situated on the Mid-Cheshire Line running from Chester to Manchester (via Altrincham). Knutsford is not well served by buses. The only routes with a regular service are Knutsford to Altrincham via Wilmslow (which runs half-hourly) and the Knutsford Town Circular (which runs up to half-hourly).
Knutsford town centre has several restaurants and pubs, coffee shops, boutiques, antique shops and art galleries. Knutsford has a medium-sized supermarket, Booths, also an Aldi, a Little Waitrose, a Sainsbury's Local, and two Co-Op stores (one on Princess Street and one on Parkgate Lane).
Knutsford has two Anglican churches, St John the Baptist and St Cross; a Roman Catholic church, St Vincent's; a Methodist church, a Unitarian church and a Gospel church. Knutsford is located in the Church of England Diocese of Chester and in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury.

DEMU Showcase 2014: Llwydd Town
Llwydd Town is a 4mm OO Gauge Layout by George Woodcock:
Llwydd Town is situated in North-East Walses at the end of a spur from
the Shrewsbury - Chester line. Access is via a triangle at Llwydd
Junction thus giving running from both North and South. Llwydd is the
name for a new town created in the 1970's and now growing rapidly which
has lead to a big revival in rail travel.
The original station built by the Cambrian Railway Co. has been
demolished and the goods yard and most of the sidings have been cleared
and sold for development. A modern station built to a 'heritage' theme,
has been partly paid for by the supermarket company which occupies most
of the old station site. The Royal Mail has concentrated a large amount
of bulk mail operations here using a concrete loading pad on a short
siding as well as the only remaining platform at quieter times. The one
remaining Freight operation is a small oil terminal belonging to
Cambrian Fuels. Engineers' wagons are stabled here and ocasionally
ballast is loaded hopper wagons.
DMU services operate to/from Birmingham, Chester, Manchester,
Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton with a regional railways locomotive-hauled
service to Cardiff. Surprisingly there is an inter city service to
London which is Diesel hauled to and from Wolverhampton. The Royal Mail
operates services to Cardiff, Preston and Crewe as well as making use
of some of the passenger workings. The Shrewsbury to London Euston TPO
now starts from Llwydd. This runs to Rugby where it combines with
another service. The stock stables at Shrewsbury during the daytime.
The oil terminal is supplied by an 'as required' service from Stanlow
which can run any day.
DMU's are a mixture of first generation and sprinter units. Locomotives
comprise classes 31, 37/0, 37/4, and 47. The traffic services roughly
represent those seen on the Marches lines in the late 80's, early 90's.
