BYU-Idaho student recounts being impaled on railing
REXBURG -- I’m Natalia Hepworth in Rexburg standing next to the stairs where one girl received injuries that could have cost her life.
It was nearly a week ago Jewelissa Lowe and her friendswere unloading the Christmas tree they had just cut down from their day trip in Yellowstone National Park.
She had to go move the truck, but we were still picking the branches out of the back of the truck bed,” Lowe said.
What happened next was something no one could have prepared for. Her friend started the truck when suddenly it lurched sharply backward pushing Lowe between the hand rail and the truck bed.
“I just (remember) backing up and thinking, the odds of me finding the hand rail compared to how much stair width there is,” Lowe said, “I was hoping I didn’t find one of the hand rails (and) that I would just go down the steps and the truck would stop before then.”
Unfortunately the truck didn’t stop in time. The pressure of the truck caused the hand rail to puncture a a gapping hole into Lowe's back. She then rolled down the stairs before coming to a stop.
I went to turn over a bit and then I heard gurgling. That’s what really freaked me out was that I could hear the blood starting to leak out of my back,” Lowe said.
Eventually help came, and she was rushed to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. Although there was immense blood loss, the rail missed her spine by only a few inches. Lowe suffered muscle damage and a broken hip.

Snow Removal Services in Rexburg:
This story is something that is near and dear to me. Near and dear because my apartment complex in Rexburg has not plowed our parking lot or shoveled our sidewalks all winter. I have to walk over a 3 foot mound of snow to get to my car. After climbing the mini mountain to my car and making the short journey to campus, it is sad to say that the conditions around campus are not much better. Add the fact that a few of my friends have fallen victim of winter parking tickets and voila, I had a story.

Rexburg Idaho water advisory to be lifted soon
REXBURG -- Commercial food services recently received an advisory to take precautionary measures with city water in Rexburg.
Through a recent sample the threshold of a bacteria type called coliform exceeded the standard of 5%, but not by much.
In order to be in compliance with the State of Idaho, and EPA drinking water quality requirements, we do 40 samples of our drinking water each month, Public Works Director, John Millar said.
Two of those samples are allowed to comeback positive for coliform, instead there were three bad samples, or 7.5%, enough for the Department of Environmental Quality to warrant a temporary water advisory on food establishments.
Millar says there are two possible reasons for these bad samples. A change in recent water usage, and a change in temperature.
We use three or four times as much water in the summer as we do the winter, so that kind of shocks the system a little bit, Millar said, Temperature has changed, and there’s some evidence that, that sometimes will free up organisms that are in the pipe.”
According to Millar the organism itself isn’t a contaminant, but an indicator of a possible contaminant.
It’s normally occurring organisms that are found everywhere in nature, Millar said.
Dylan Makemson, the owner of Gator Jacks, says business hasn't slowed down much because of the advisory.
Luckily we just switched to pure sugar glass bottle Pepsis, and so we’ve just been pushing those a lot more than our fountain drinks,” Makemson said, “We sold out of our bottled water pretty much instantly during our lunch rush, and then we had to go and purchase more just so we could keep up with the demand.
The samples were tested again Monday morning and showed zero pollutants. An additional test is required before DEQ lifts the advisory.
We have super quality water, and we do everything we can to protect that quality, Millar said.
If the final test comes back clean the advisory should be lifted Tuesday before noon.
Officials say the protocol for testing water will be changed spring of 2016.
Updates on the advisory can be found on the Rexburg.org.
Graffiti in Rexburg
REXBURG - It's one of the worst eyesores that can ever happen to a city.
Graffiti, there's no time limit on it. We have it during the day time, we've found it at night. It just depends on location, said captain Randy Lewis.
Since graffiti can happen at anytime. If you do see someone in the process of defacing anything, be sure to contact the police immediately, and don't confront the person doing the tagging.
We can't be everywhere, so we ask the city residents to be vigilant. Nature park down by the skater park, we built that specifically for the skaters. And that's one of our problem areas. said Lewis.
When publicly owned places like the skate park get sprayed, it's up to the city to foot the cost of the removal.
We've had to use sand blasters, sometime paint remover will work, said Lewis.
And that means if graffiti continues to appear here, it's only a matter of time until the cement corrodes so badly that skater's won't get that smooth glide.
It just create a little damage to the surface, said Lewis.
As we draw closer to the colder season outdoor crimes usually slow down.
We still get it during the winter months, said Lewis.
Back in June a 16-year-old spray painted 26 businesses in Rexburg.
When the boy was caught in the act by an officer and asked him why he did it, the boy replied, I was just bored.
Interestingly enough, the skate park in Idaho Falls has had no graffiti because the skaters police themselves.

Boise, ID - RV Living
We're back at it and our first stop is Boise, ID! We explore the Boise River Greenbelt Trail by bike, which brings us right through the middle of Boise. There's so much to see and do here, we enjoy watching the surfers at the whitewater park and are overwhelmed by the number of beautiful city parks that the trail meanders through. We get off the trail just a bit to visit the Old Idaho Penitentiary before heading back to our campground for an early evening. We use most of the next day to get some chores done before visiting Camel's Back Park for sunset.
