Reykjadalur Hot River Spring near Rekjavik, Iceland - Day Run/Hike
This is a great day trip/run that is close to the Icelandic capital. There is a little elevation to contend with, but not so bad when you consider the reward at the end of the trail - an entire creek of HOT water to bathe in. It is also known as Smokey Valley.
Iceland HOT RIVER Reykjadulur near Hveragerdi | Iceland Hike | Hike to Hot Springs in Iceland

Hiking near the town of Hverageri, Iceland proved to be amazing and cheap! While all the tourists spend their money going to the Blue Lagoon for $125 each, you can go on this amazing hike, sit it the hot river, and relax for free! The river is fed by hot springs that make it a must to see. While hiking you will pass many hot springs that will make you feel like you are on another planet. At the end of the trail there are places to change (not too private) and then soak your cares away.
The hot springs hike is a modest hike. Not too steep. Approximately 4 miles round trip. Some had hiking poles others did not.
Hveragerdi is a small town nestled below a beautiful back drop of mountains. There are a few restaurants and an amazing bakery. We stopped at the bakery to get our lunch before we hiked.
Kathycooks4u made a traditional European breakfast and a traditional Icelandic dinner after the hike. This adventure was planned by foreventuretravel.com. Check out their website for an amazing tour!

Hveragerdi Hot Spring River Trail, Iceland
A walk up the hot spring river trail in Hveragerdi, Iceland. March 2017.
This is a lesser known Icelandic attraction which is on the Golden Circle and it is well worth spending an afternoon to follow it. The start of the trail is at the far end of the road out of Hveragerdi Town. Follow signs for the golf course site and keep driving a further 2km to the end of the road where there is a car park and cafe at the start.
Hveragerdi Town is full of naturally occuring hot springs and has a visitors centre with a Geothermal Park in the main town. There is also an excellent Public Geothermal Swimming Pool with hot pots which is open all year round.

Iceland Hot Spring River Reykjadalur - Near Reykjavík
Great hike outside of Reykjavík, Iceland to a beautiful Natural Hot Spring.
Hiking to Reykjadalur Hot Springs in Hveragoi, Iceland!
Reykjadalur, or Steam Valley, is a beautiful valley characterized by geothermal activity. This area is filled with hot springs and mud pools. We hiked through steam so heavy you couldn't see where you were going and the smell of sulfur so intense, it made our eyes water. Our reward at the end of the 3.5 km hike was soaking in the beautiful natural hot river!
Check out our photos, how-to's and recommendations by clicking the link below:
Where is Reykjadalur Hot Springs?
The starting point for this hike is in the town called Hveragerdi which is 40 km/25 mi east of Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik.
How do you get to Reykjadalur Hot Springs?
From the Ring Road/Route 1, turn onto the main road of Hveragerdi called Breiðamörk and continue straight through town. Eventually, you will reach a gravel road with a parking lot (pictured below). Park here and cross the “bridge” over the water to reach the start of the hiking trail to Reykjadalur Hot Springs.
How should you tour Reykjadalur Hot Springs?
There’s really no wrong way to do it. The hike itself is 3.5 km/2 mi each way and takes about 45-60 minutes. If you don’t want to hike, you can take a horseback ride through a majority of the trail but you must hike the final part. Be sure to check out different areas of the river to try out the varieties of water temperature.
What will you see on the hike to Reykjadalur Hot Springs?
You will experience some of Iceland’s natural phenomenons such as boiling mud pools, different colored hot springs, steams vents, a beautiful waterfall and that delicious sulfur smell!
Do you need to book a tour to hike to Reykjadalur Hot Springs?
No, this is an easy do-it-by-yourself type of excursion, however, you must book with a tour group if you want to horseback ride the trail. If you don’t have a car, booking with a tour group is a good idea too.
When should you go to Reykjadalur Hot Springs?
Iceland weather can change in a heartbeat so make sure there’s isn’t an incoming storm. During the winter, the trail could become impassable. Also, no areas are lit up so avoid going during dark. This is the perfect spot to enjoy the midnight sun during the summer months.
How long will it take to explore Reykjadalur Hot Springs?
This is highly dependent on:
How long it will take you to hike to the hot springs (typically 45-60 minutes)
How many times will you stop for pictures/videos/to take in your surroundings?
How long do you want to soak in the hot river?
Overall, give yourself about 4 hours to do it comfortably.
How much does it cost?
Free!
Are there amenities?
At the start of the hike, there is a cafe (open only during summer) and toilets. There are no additional amenities.

2T2T TIPS
Do stay on the trails since it is a geothermal area and you may not be able to “see” dangers.
If the smell of sulfur makes you nauseous, consider bringing a mask to cover your mouth and nose.
Wear comfortable clothing (layers!) and shoes suitable for an 45 min-60 min hike each way.
Similar to all hot springs, wear darker colored swimwear to avoid any discoloration.
There are dividers where you can change into and out of your swimwear with limited privacy.
The further up the river, the hotter the water.
What else can you see nearby?
Walk the rim of Kerid Volcano (27 km/17 mi)
Snorkel between 2 continents at the Silfra Fissure (62 km/39 mi)
Check out Gullfoss Waterfall (84 km/52 miles

Iceland: HOT RIVER Reykjadalur near Hveragerthi
Support our channel :
There is a beautiful valley, Reykjadalur valley, in the vicinity of Hveragerði town, only ca 45 km away from Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city, where I live.
The name of the valley, Reykjadalur, means Steam Valley and you will understand why when the valley opens up after the hike. The valley is filled with hot springs and mud pools and there is even a hot river in which one can bathe!
The Reykjadalur valley is part of the Hengill area, but Mt. Hengill is an extinct volcano, which was active 120,000 years ago.
When we last visited Reykjadalur there were 123 cars on the parking lot so we got a little bit startled! Would it be crowded in the valley and impossible to find a good spot in the river?
espite the myriad of cars off we went anyway as the weather forecast had said it would be sunny and still, so we knew it would be a good day to bathe in the warm river. It was overcast when we started the hike, but as I dipped into the warm river the sun came out.
he hike is 3 km long and will take ca 45-60 minutes one way with plenty of photo stops.
On the first part of the trail there are several hot springs and mud pools to the left. And a borehole called Drottningarhola or Queen's borehole.
Be careful where you step here though when you leave the trail and visit the hot pools. Everything is boiling here, so there is no bathing in these pools, they are extremely hot!

???????? REYKJADALUR HOT SPRINGS (FULL HIKE)
Not far from Reykjavik, located just 40 minutes from Reykjavik in South Iceland, Reykjadalur is an amazing setting for a day hike.
Reykjadalur means “steam valley” in Icelandic, and this place definitely holds up to its name.
A short 1 hour hike brings you to the Hot River at Reykjadalur. Swim in geothermal waters while soaking in the incredible views that Iceland has to offer.
The trailhead to start your journey to the Reykjadalur hot river is located at the Hot River cafe near the town of Hveragerði. A large parking lot is available, and the option to grab a coffee or snack at the cafe before heading out. The trail is wide and very easy to follow with a steady incline the entire way, the trip is a short 3.88 km and only takes an hour to an hour and a half one way. At about three quarters of the way there you will be able to see the river, stay to the left side as you continue to hike. Option to hop in for a swim at this point, although the water is not very warm. Throughout the hike you will see several geothermal water holes (it is not advised to touch the water as it can reaching boiling temperatures) and amazing views the entire way. Where most people swim at the end of this hike, there are wooden docks and semi-private changing stalls. Option to camp out on the side of the river to enjoy a sunset or sunrise soak. The farther up stream, the hotter the water temperature gets, so there is a sweet spot for anyone's preference. The trail can get busy, however if you start by 7:30 am you may be one of the first to reach the river. The water is clear and perfect for relaxing in after the hike up there, definitely a great way to experience Iceland's geothermal wonders.
